Oops -- Question Already Asked About Potty Training a 2 Year Old Boy?

I sent this request (below) BEFORE I looked into the archives and found this very question had just been asked -- no need to answer unless you have something new from last week. Thanks! (I don't know how to delete the question).

I need some advice on 1) when its best to start to potty train a 2-year old boy and 2) the best method out there for doing it. Do you have any suggestions? He is certainly aware that his "peepee" exists, pointing to it and laughing, but doesn't seem to have any awareness of the connection between it and urine. He's happy to sit on the toilet and flush it, but after sitting on it for a few seconds, says "all done" and whines to get off. What do you think?

What can I do next?

Children will generally let you know when they are ready. The fact that he can see what he does is great. I would try the new pampers feel and learn diapers and see how that works. I've heard it works wonders. Other than that I just use the 10-min method---after a drink ( a full drink), wait roughly 10 min, sit him on the potty turn on the sink to a trickle and let him sit it out until he goes. Normally 9 out of 10 they go, repeat this method several times and he'll get the hang of it.

I didn't see you question befoe. Having 2 sons and many nephews, I can tell you honestly I think two years old is too young to try to train a boy. I know the diapers are a pain, but I would wait until he is almost 3. Both you and your son are going to get frustrated. Boys just seem to need a little more time than girls to be ready. Good luck.

Hi Kelly. I am new to this site and didn't check archives, but when my son was that age I found that having him watch Dad helped the connection. Also making sure he had just finished a drink about 15 minutes before trying. If he wants to get off the toilet too soon you can always have a special book that he can read while sitting ... that is not available at any other time.

Hello, i am a single mthr of a beautiful 8 yr old girl, potty training was actually easier with her in day care.
However, I do remember "Dr Phil" had a special on TV regarding "potty" training.
He said that the brain will crystalize information for a two yr old if he can teach someone else to use the potty.
He had a pooty training goal of ONE DAY. The kids were given a game of teaching thier Elmo's to use the potty. They had to give instruction and put thier stuffed animals on the seat and wait for them to finish and wipe, They practiced praising thier stuffed animals for a good job. It was interesting. Something with being taught verses teaching ti yourself that hleped the children internalize and he used teh words "crystalize" the information. Hope that helps

Make potty time fun - have books to read and special toys near the potty that are ONLY for when sitting on the potty. Part of the trick is to get the child to sit there long enough to "do" something LOL. Sit him down and pleasantly keep him distracted for a few minutes. Do this the time of day that your son normally has a bowel movement -this does no good if your child sincerely does not have to go. You do this because you start potty training with bowel movements and once he gets the idea then can you work on getting him to pee in the toilet. Good Luck!

Hi K.,

I was the mom that posted the request you are referring to and I thought I'd let you know my son still has no interest. I have been telling him that if he wants to go to preschool he has to start going potty...but still nothing! :) I don't want to pressure him about it but it gets kind of frustrating. Let me know if something works for you!

Hey Kelly I have 2 boys I started potty training before they turned 2 and what i did to get the boys to stand i would put cereal in the toliet so they can shoot them down.. So the boys can have fun like sanking a battle ship.. It did take a little of time for my first son who was not fully potty trained till he was 3 yrs old but my second before he turned 2 it was all done.. MY oldest now is 9 years old.
