One Year Old with Eczema

i have one suggestion cocobutter cream. I get the spots from getting to dry so that they dont itch.

Hi, I am a 25 year old mother of three boys ages 5,4,3 all of which has eczema. My 3 year old was hospitalized for it. I finally found something that worked for me and there skin looks great. I melted down a combination of cocco butter, benadryl,eucerin and vitamin E in a double boiler, let it sit and harden a little. I packed there skin every night and in about three days I could see a huge difference. Even the scars started to lighten up and know there skin looks great.

My 10 month old has had eczema since she was two months old. We were given a steroid cream to put on when it's really really bad and the rest of the time to give douse her in baby Aquaphor after a bath. They told me to never ever get soap on her face. Using this method, the eczema got worse before it got better. But now it's better.

I just came back from my daughters 1 month doctors visit and was told she has eczama. He told me to put cream on it, its on her forhead. I know that it can be hereitary, my husband has it really bad and so does his mother. Good Luck and let me know what works for you.

I wnated to put this up here in case other people looked it over...I have eczema and roseasa (sp?) and a few years ago my dematologist perscribed Elidel for me. I have known others who used it on themselves and thier children. Within the past 6 months or so I have found numerous studies linking Elidel with some serious side effects like cancer and even death in young children. Now I use a face wash and lotion from Aveeno and oatmeal lotion and both problems have gone away almost 100% (depending on weather and stress). Please, if you know someone using Elidel I would strongly recomend that you stop right away...there are other options!

Hi my name is K. and my nephew had the same problems since he was small (he's 5 now). And my sister had all types of meds too that didnt work but she found that applying lotion several times a day helped alot. everytime it gets dry put it on again. Hope this helps you out.

My son has eczema. The dr's have also given him perscription lotions and even had him on Zyrtec but I have to say, I have found nothing more helpful thatn Aquaphor. We put it on after every bath or shower (he is 6 now) and it works great. We also wash his clothes in FREE laundry detergetnt. Like Tide Free and clear or ALL free and clear. We use Baby Aveeno soap, you can find it in the baby soap aisle. Occassionally, in the winter, he gets an oatmeal bath with Aveeno Oatmeal bath stuff. I swear by the Aquaphor though. It has worked better for us than any other perscription lotion!

Hi there. My daughter is gonna be 4 in Dec. She has had episodes of eczema since about a year old. I tried hydrocortisol cream, helps a bit. What I usually do, is try not to sweat it, I try to load up on the cream after baths, and maybe do some oatmeal baths as well, depending on how bad it is at the time. I only treat her when she seems uncomfortable. I do hate how it looks on her, mostly her legs, butt, arms. It almost completely dissappeared in the summer, but winter seems to be worse, I assume because the heat is on, air is dryer.

Try to keep the skin moist and lubed, lol.

Let me know if you get any better ideas from the Dr. Mine doenst' seem to concerned.

My daughter is 2 years and three monthes old, and she had her eczema on 8 monthes old. We tried all kinds of steroid creams, and they worked the ways exactly as you described. Then my friend recommended me an alergist who located at Maryland, and the doctor prescribled zertyics, which we have been used before plus some moisture cream, it worked wonder. I forgot the name of the cream, but if you are interested, you can write to me and I can find out for you. Maybe the doctor's address since you are in D.C. area. My daughter's symptom basically caused by the combination effect of her eczema and allergy, now with the test, we controlled the food that she eat everyday. Now seems everything under control. Hi there. I am H. - Mom of Aiden and Annabelle. My son Aiden has a genetic disorder and one of the traits is severe eczema, so we have been dealing with it for 3 years. He was very very bad as an infant. We did the steroid creams. What we found that worked for us was to use all natural products in the home. Once we got rid of the tide, lysol, bleach and the like he started to show a dramatic improvement. I have found a lotion called Renew from a company called Melaleuca that works very well. Aiden loves to bathe and water makes his skin flare up. He gets a bath every other day and I douse him with this lotion when he is done. When it gets REAL bad I have to use the steroid cream - but once it is under control I only have to use the lotion. It has been over a year since I have had to use the steroid cream. This is a huge imporvement for us. We use to get him up from naps and find him all bloody from scratching! Hope this gives you some insight!

I had the same problem with my son, he still has it if he does not use lotion. i buy him oatmeal lotion from Avon, and it seem to keep it away in the winter if her remembers to put it on. He does not get it in the summer. It is important to put it on right after bathing, to moisterize the skin. Hope it helps you.

My daughter goes to daycare with a set of twins with this same condition, The mother has been putting vasiline on it to help it and seems to be clearing up quite nicely, It was so bad that their cheeks were actually bleeding due to this. Hope this helps. Good Luck

Hello my son had the same problem and still suffers from time to time with it now, we use Tricimulone (not really sure how to spell it) Ointment and with in a few days his skin was looking so much better.

PS- We had been using Elidel along with the tricimulone mixed with vaseline but they had something on the news about it saying it's not good and cause Cancer but these days what doesn't.

My son is 3 months old. He hasn't been diagnosed with eczema but I'm sure that's what it is. It's on his face and elbows. His doctor wasn't too worried about it, he told me to use Eucerin cream, but that didn't do a thing. What is working wonders now is Aveeno baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream. After I used it once I couldn't believe the difference in his skin. Now only a week later all the scaly flakiness is gone. And it's not greasy and it doesn't take forever to absorb into his skin. My son has eczema which is totally caused by food and environmental allerigies.

We took him to an allergist who helped us identify some of his allergies which helped. We also marked on the calendar when he had flair-up to track things that were not identified by the allerigist,we noted foods he ate that day and what we were doing.

My brother-in-law is a dermatologist so he has helped us with suggestions as well. We stopped using regular soap and switched to Cetaphil. We also used Cetaphil Mositurizing Cream after bathtime, when we dress him in the morning and several times during the days. When the patches are bad, we put hydrocortisone cream on as well as using the Cetaphil. When he is itchy, we give him benedryl. His head seems to itch a lot when he is having a flair-up.

My son is three years old and his eczema is not as bad as it was when he was a baby. Avoiding foods and other things he is allergic to has helped a lot.

My daughter had it very badly when she was placed with us at 9 months old. We saw the doctor several times and they gave us cortisone cream and said to slather her with Eucerin cream every day after a lukewarm 10 minute bath with NO soap - use the Eucerin cream on a washcloth in lieu of soap. It worked to some extent. Like someone else said, it finally came down to food "allergies"- juice to be exact. If she has any juice with apple juice in it, she breaks out all over again. The only kind of juice we can give her is Welch's 100% white grape juice as almost all other juice uses at least some apple juice as filler (except acidic orange and grapefruit). Especially Juicy Juice - it is 100% juice, but it's primarily flavored apple juice! Read the labels, when in doubt.

Hope you find something that helps your son - it's tough to see them suffer with it!

My 6 year old daughter has been dealing with eczema on the back of her knees since she was 1. I have found that the best thing that works is Aveeno lotion. Also, Aveeno makes a type of hydricortizone cream that comes in a tube that is wonderful.(I have only seen it when I lived in VA) I advize using the regular aveeno lotion on a daily basis to keep it at bay. my son is now 3 and just starting to get better- here is what has worked for us...elidel and protopic didnt help us at all but some kids it does, we have always had to use some strength of steroids on the patches (low, med, high) and just get the bad spots. recently my dr gave us a combination of acid mantle and hydrocortisone cream to use daily. it has made all the difference in the world!!!
other things- we cover bed and pillow for mites since he tested positive for that, we only use the clear and free detergents for all the family wash,we dont use any soap, only the aveeno bath soaks (i pour it over his body), i lube him up as soon as he gets out of the tub and i keep his whole body covered (footed pajamas, long sleeves...). feel free to e mail me- i struggled with this for years with him and tried changing diet, and other things, but now it is finally getting better!

My son (now 7 months old) has eczema as well. We applied 1% cortisone cream on it 2-3 times a day for 10 days, as well as used Eucerin lotion. It cleared right up, & he hasn't had it again. We lather him up him lotion all the time, especially immediately after he gets out of the bath. Our pediatrician also recommended Cetaphil, but we haven't tried that. We were also told that it could be allergy or stress induced. We moved to Pa from Fla, so all of that driving in the car is what brought on Jayden's, we believe. I use it on myself & my girls every time we bathe and we never have any probs. with dry skin or eczema(which we are all prone to, especially me.) I know this is probably naieve and silly as my daughter had a very mild case of eczema when she was tiny, but I found that using mild laundry detergent helped-and I put Crisco on it to keep it moisturized. It was something that wouldn't hurt her if she got some in her mouth and it's a non-chemical / non-steroidal treatment- I felt better about that.

It's good that you are seeing a dermatologist at this point. I don't know if this will help, but recently I was diagnosed with numular eczema (had never had anything like it before)...got it about a year ago... had the same symptons...dermatologists said it had unknown causes... "maybe
allergy related..sometimes stress can induce it". I went to 3 dermatologists before they knew what it was and diagnosed it. It's a particularly nasty and hard to get rid of form of eczema. dry, red, itchy rough patches (like small irregular circles) that seemed to get redder and more raw every day... the doctor gave me a shot of cortisone and a cream called clobestal which helped a great deal. I had to apply the cream twice a day on the red spots for about 2 weeks... and they went away...(but you can't do the cortisone more than 1 or 2 times, and not sure if it would be good for a child...)
but every now and then, I will get a couple more new dry, red, itchy patches & need cream again. My dermatologist said to
use a good moisturizing soap like oil of olay (ivory is very drying...)and follow up after bath immediately when skin is wet with a "bath oil" from the pharmacy (not baby oil)to trap moisture in skin.
Keeping my skin moisturized seems to help a great deal, but this time of year it seems to recur when air is dryer inside...

my son had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM.. you wanna know what it was with him.
FOOD ALLERGIES! until he was almost two.. I had to cut out of his diet.. dairy, eggs, wheat, .. and yeah - try to do that .. there is not much left to feed the poor guy. but the eczema went away... and that was the biggest relief. good news.. he grew out of it!

I noticed that you are going to the allergist. My son was tested for TONS of allergins.. and non of them game back positive... yet, eleimating the foods took care of it 100%. keep this in mind. my doctor described it - that the foods were causing an irritant to the exzema and that he wasnt necessaarliy "allergic" to those foods.

I believe it may start cause we start feeding out kids the wrong foods too early. of course with some kids it doesnt effect them.. and others it does. i think babies should stay on breast milk and formula if necessary - until age one atleast. while food can be introduced as early as six months.. you should watch what is given. My son was eating soo much wheat (cheerios , bread,,pasta... ) that the excessive amount.. made the exzema soooo bad i just wanted to cry . I read about the possiblity of allergies effecting the skin.. (and infact it happened to me as a baby too) .. and wheat being one of the most proan allergins... i took it out of his diet.. and IT WORKED! but then started coming back again.. so i then removed dairy .. and so on.

the key...

remove one food item at a time for atleast a week. if nothing happens you can put that food back in the diet.. and then start again with another. dont remove many items at once b/c if it is effective you wont know what food item the allergy was caused by.

I have mucho advice if it is allergies on what to feed him...

when desparate , i used an over the counter cream.. elidel.. but had some controversial effect that is read about elsewhere. but the cream was the only thing that actual worked .

i also used oatmeal baths - aveeno uses a good one.

remember, it most likely will end. My son is almost clear of it.. occsionaly gets small rashes.. but we nip it in the butt right away by elimating foods that he is eating excessively.

My mom works for an allergist and my husband and 5 year old son both suffer from eczema.

There is an over the counter cream call Gentle Naturals sold at Wal-mart that does wonders. I agree that it may be linked to allergies. What my mom said to do is to soak and seal. That means soak your son in the water for at least 20 minutes, then as soon as he gets out of the water, seal with a very thick cream like the gentle naturals from head to toe.

I would also have him checked for asthma. Many people who have eczema have it as a secondary symptom of asthma.

I have had two friends in the past with this problem with their babies.In both cases, it turned out that they were allergic to wheat. They were nursing and completely eliminated wheat from their own diets and the eczema disappeared. Before that, nothing helped. There are many wheat free foods available now, even at Giant there is a wheat free section.
A homeopathic doctor can also give great advice on this.

Hi! my 5 months old has it too- and here is what has cleared it almost completely up for us:

We bathe her nightly. If I use soap on her chest/ stomach area, which is where she has it the worst, I use aquaphora which is made by Eucerin. I rinse her 3 times. After her bath, I put cream by the same company on the affected area. It is a cream, not a lotion, it almost looks like petroleum jelly. I put this cream on 2 to 3 times daily. I also never put anything with snaps, or zippers against the infected area.. this made the biggest difference. So at night, she sleeps in a onsie and pants. My peditrician recommended the no metal, and that made a difference overnight.. I also I do all the normal stuff like no dryer sheets, I use dreft, et....

I have heard that the baby line from Arbonne works wonders on this. My kids have never had this issue but my friend swears it worked better for her son than any of the meds perscribed by her dermatologist. I know you can get the products on line. Good Luck!

I found that Gentel Nautures Products worked really well. My son had excema until he was almost 2 years old. He only has mild cases in the winter time. The doctor prescribed hydrocorozone and a topical cream called Desowen for his face and arms. I couldn't use any type of soap that had sents in them. He hasn't had a eposode in a long time. He just gets really bad diaper irritation when drinking red drinks or lots of foods with red dyd in them.. I hope you can find dome help for your little one, it is just awful to see them so red faced all the time.

have you tried any food eliminations to see if it would help? have you ever had alergy testing done? cow's milk is said to often be a big factor in a lot of cases of eczema. my daughter doesn't have eczema, but her skin does get rough and very itchy if she has too much milk/dairy. we keep bathing at a minimum and only use natural soaps, if any(babies don't need to be scrubbed down with soap every day, well, that's true for everyone imo!).

when you use creams and medicines to treat the symptoms, that's all you're doing, damage control. which is ok, but i really believe in trying to find the root or cause of the problem and work on eliminating that. that's the only way it's going to truely get better.

My 1 1/2 year old had the same problem in his first year. We tried everything. I do not have one baby picture where his cheeks are not red and bumpy. Finally at 11 months he was diagnosed with food allergies. He is allergic to dairy, egg, and soy. Once I cut out all of those items he seemed to cleared up overnight. He hasn't had a problem since. Best of luck to you - it can be so frustrating.

I wanted to let you know that there is an over the counter cream that my husband picked up (for me, not my kids lol) that helps with eczema. It is a very thick lotion for babies that really helps the affected area from getting dry and raw. I believe my husband got this lotion from Giant, but it may have been Eckerds. I would look for it the next time you are out. When I was pregnant I couldn't use the steroid creams and my skin was so bad! The lotion really helped to keep the area moist and although it was itchy and looked bad, it didn't get raw and crack and bleed like it could have. My 3yo son has eczema also. I tried EVERYTHING!!! The best we have found is Gentle Naturals. They make a great bath product and I LOVE the Baby Eczema Cream. I also only use Dreft Laundry detergent. I find if I use anything else he breaks out. One thing to consider is if he might be allergic to anything--food,pollen,pet dander.....

hi, i know excatlly what your going through. my son is 11 months old and has had eczema since he was a newborn. what i found what works best for him is i bath him with a mild cleanser called cetaphil. they also have a moisturiser too. and i only bath him everyother day so his skin wont dry out. i highly recomend cetaphil.

try some good ole vaseline.

My daughter has eczema & there is a cream called lidex. It is the strongest cream there is that is by RX only. Most doctors do not want to give it out because it is so strong but you can ask for it & say that you'd really like to try it. It cleared her eczema up almost instantly. Also we use a cream called BABY ECZEMA CREAM by baby orajel. It comes in a green box & I have only found it at Target & CVS. It has a knumbing ingredient in it & has worked wonders. My doctor actually recommends it now b/c of all the people I have recommeded it to. It works wonders. The Lidex cream you want to use no more than 5 days. It should clear up & then immediately use the Baby eczema cream. Also use ALL free detergent for all his clothes. NEVER wash his clothes with yours. Sometimes kids are so sensative that you may have to wash your clothes with all free as well. Another thing is you can use normal Jonson's baby wash on him as long as you use a soap with no fragrances or dyes in it afterwards. I have tried every cream & this is the only cream & method that has worked. Email me if you cant find it. I may be able to pick it up & mail it to you. Also my daughter has been tested and has NO allergies at all. So thats where all the methods have come in to play for us

My son was also diagnosed with eczema at 3 months old. We went to a dermatologist after using several different creams also. The dermatologist gave me some steroid cream and told me to bathe him in clear water (no soaps or creams) and before drying him off, use Crisco shortening. The Crisco that you cook with!! Strange it seems, but it helped him a lot because it kept his skin from drying out.
I used this remedy for a couple of months until I found out about this remarkable lotion from a wellness company called Melaleuca. It's called Renew and it's better than all the other things I have tried for my son. His eczema is so much better and he doesn't have as many break-outs as he did in the past.
Check with your dermatologist to see what he recommends first. It will not hurt him to use the Renew because it's specially formulated for sensitive skin and for eczema and psoriasis. Hi. I know that you have a plan of action but wanted to add two more things to consider.
1. The water. My son has allergies and gets eczema blotches every so often. When he was younger, we tried everything and just like you nothing worked. Then one day a door-to-door salesman showed up asking to test our water to show how good his water softner product was. He tested our tap water and was very surprised by the amount of chlorine in the water. We bought his water softner and within days the eczema was calmed down.
2. Spreading out bath time to every other day. We had been giving our son a bath every night as part of his bed time routine. It made sense to us. Babies get dirty peeing and pooping all day. Now the schedule is full bath on one day; hands and face on the next. It seems to help.

So sorry to hear of your son's problem! It's such a miserable condition. My son ( who is now 11) developed this at about 2 1/2 months. He was miserable. It turned out that it was a severe allergy to cow's milk based formula which he had been given by a baby sitter only once! It took awhile to figure out what started it but once it got going it was difficult to get it under control. I was reading everything and came across a description in a book by T. Berry Brazelton. I had already been thru creams etc. with my pediatrician and a dermatologist. I immediately took him to a pediatric allergist who correctly identified the cause of the problem. It took 2 more months but we got it under control. What happens is that the sensitivity to the offending food (most often food) sets off an allergic response which is manifested in inflammation of the skin. Once this process begins it just feeds on itself until the cycle is interrupted. So my advice is skip the skin doctor and get to the allergist. I really feel for your child. The itching is miserable and the patches can become infected.
Once the skin begins to calm down, I used a cream that I got from the pharmacist called Aquaphor. It was very emollient and had nothing in it that would irritate the skin.
My son has had and continues to have food allergies. He has since grown out of allergies to milk and egg but remains allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. He also has allergies to dog and cat and some pollens. He must carry an epi-pen as a precaution because of the nut and peanut thing. I hope this is helpful to you.

My son also has eczema most of the time it is allergy related and if you cut out the foods he is allergic to the eczema reduces or clears up. Most allergists don't want to test children under two, but if there are problems they should make an exception. They will tell you they need to do a prick test, but that isn't necessary. All they have to do is draw some blood and test the blood for common allergies. My friends one year old was just tested because of eczema and when they got the results back they cut out the foods he was allergic to and the eczema cleared up. Hope this helps.

My friend has a son who went through similiar problems and it turned out to be an allergy to dairy. Check into it. Once she was aware of that and stopped giving him dairy products, it cleared up completely.

I'd like to recommend Arbonne International's baby care line..it's amazing! I've had several clients use it for eczema, all with great results. I have a before and after picture of a baby with skin problems who used the baby line and it cleared everything up.

I have 6 children and 4 of them have had eczema. The youngest is two and still has it. I went through the same thing with all the prescription meds & ointments. But,I have found that the best way to deal with it is what I use in their baths. I currently bath them in St.Ives Oatmeal&Shea butter body wash and then I rub them down with Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa butter lotion & follow it up with plain old Vaseline. I just rub it into the dry patches. I also use it between baths a couple of times a day. And while it doesn't completley go away it is enough that my son is not always scratching or picking at it. You might also try Fragrance free Dove. I know that this sounds like alot but it really works for my 2 yr old. I hope this helps!
