I have always switched over to all milk and only put it the cup. If she wants a bottle then she would only get water in it.
My daughter is going to be turning one at the end of this month. Since she will be moving on to real milk, I want to know how other Mom's dealt with the issue of ending the formula and starting with the milk in a cup or sippy cup? Is there an easy way to transition? Should I keep feeding her 1/2 formula, 1/2 milk or go cold turkey on her? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks for all the advice! I did what everyone generally told me to do which is slowly add the milk in. So far she is drinking 1/3 whole milk with 2/3 "next step" formula (from a bottle). She seems to be taking it easily. I had another side issue though. She never drank from a sippy cup effeciently so I can't get her to drink the milk from one. I am hoping to get that all worked out though. I really don't want to deal with her getting attached to the bottle and not using a sippy cup. Wish me luck!!!

Cold turkey didn't work for my 13 month old son. We had to start with 3/4 formula, 1/4 milk and make it warm (the way he was used to formula after breastfeeding). Over about 2 weeks we slowly changed the mixture until he was on only milk. At 13 mo, he LOVES whole milk and drinks 2-3 sippy cups a day, usually at meals. If your daughter REALLY doesn't like milk, you might try the drinkable yogurts (Stonyfield Farms makes a baby version with whole milk). My son loves those and would take them from a sippy cup before learning to drink milk from there.
I think the way you go about the transition to milk depends on your child. My oldest took his milk straight from the cup opposed to formula from the bottle on the first try and I had no problems after that. My middle child however was very resistant, he would take juice from the cup no problem but not milk. If I put his formula in the cup he was fine though. Even when I would mix half milk with half formula he wouldn't take it! I started with 1 oz milk and the rest formula and gradually weened him from formula. Also, when the cup was becoming more full with milk I would heat it just a titch because at first he didn't like the colness of it. Just cater a method to adapt best to your child and if problems persist consult your doctor. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!
well the first quetion would be does she drink anything else out of a sippy cup? if the answer is yes - then start putting formula into a sippy cup now - then ease her onto milk. try to get her down to one bottle a day (maybe the nighttime bottle) and then slowly ease her off of that. I never mixed the formula and milk - but you can - just mix up the formula like you normally do - then add the milk - and yes start at 1/2 and 1/2 and then go backwards. i actually sort of did it cold turkey - and it worked for my kids - but i kept formula as a back up so that if they refused to drink the milk that i could "give in " a little bit and make sure they were still getting their nutrients - make sense? Hope that helps -= and feel free to email me directly with any other questions: ____@____.com
Good Luck!

I started by getting my son used to water and juice in sippy cups. I would also give him milk in a bottle during the day, and formula for his nighttime feedings. I slowly eased him into less and less formula feedings. Then I started giving him his milk in a sippy during the day, and bottle at night. When he was sleeping well at night, and fine with his sippy cup, I cut the night bottle out, and I just give him a sippy with water.
When we switched from formula to milk we went cold turkey in a sippy cup. Formula was for bottles and milk was for cups. Although I will admit that mine were off formula before their first birthday...as our doctor instructed.
I had the same concerns with my little boy and it was a non-issue for us. I went cold turkey one day at lunchtime and he did pretty well. He took a bit of milk out of the cup but wanted his bottle. I always started lunch with a cup first then went to the bottle - it took a little less than a week & he was only on the cup. I called it success. I continued his bottle at other feedings until he was comfy with the lunch cup - then did the same for dinner, brkfst and late night was the last to go. He had been using a sippy cup for water/juice for a few months, so the cup wasn't a new experieince. I think that is a big factor! Also, I bought 4 clear blue cups specifically for milk. They look different than his juice cups. After a while he knew that milk was always in a blue cup and could decide which he wanted, juice or milk when he needed a sip between meals.
Hello-
I am the mother of a 15 month old girl. The best way I transitioned her was putting whole milk/Vitamin D milk in a bottle, but warming it just a tad in the microwave. I gave that to her just about as much as I would have formula, since she was eating solid foods pretty well by one year old. After about 2 months, I got her down to about 2 bottles of whole milk a day, and introduced the sippy cup by using juice and water in it. By 13 months, she was completley off a bottle, and using milk, juice, and water in a sippy cup. I was told by my pediatrician to stop using formula as soon as I could after her turning a year. Hope this helps!
Hi M.-
Once my girls had their 1st b-day and we got the okay from the dr. I switched them cold turkey. To ease that transition, I did make a point of buying new sippy cups that were just for milk. Then they had a milk cup and a juice cup ( I never gave juice in a bottle). I also never warmed their bottle, so the adjustment to the temperature of the milk was somewhat easier. Hope you have an easy time of it,too.

By the time my son turned 1 he had already tried milk. I gave him milk if we were visiting family and ran out of formula, or if I was getting low, I would but 1/2 formula and 1/2 milk in his bottle. So when his birthday came around I just stopped buying formula. I think I did have th buy a can of that "next step" stuff (you know the kind for toddlers) and transition him a little for gradually. But if you daughter lets you just switch her straight to milk then do that. I warmed my son's milk and put in in a bottle-which I wouldn't suggest. It made it harder to get him off the bottle and he still likes his milk warm (he's 22 months!). I did that b/c he wasn't taking well to cold milk... and I thought I'd do whatever it took to get him to drink it. Good Luck.. your daughter will tell you what she wants and doesn't want.
Don't go cold turkey...she could get constipated really fast! If you are already on half milk, half formula, start doing 3/4 milk and 1/4 formula for about 1 or two weeks and then you can go from there. If she uses a sippy cup for water and juice, try putting her milk in there, but if you have to stick with the bottle until she likes the milk taste do it for a while but keep trying the sippy cup. I hope I helped a little bit.

I had a very difficult time getting my son to switch from bottles to sippy cups. A friend recommended the Nuby cups and they worked great. They are soft like a bottle and the motion is similar. After he got used to those, he found it much easier to use the hard lipped cups. Also, always cut the juice with water. In the beginning, use about a 1/3 of juice and 2/3 of water. The acidity in the juice could make your daughter's stomach upset.
