One More Time - How Do I Get Rid of Nates??

Updated on September 09, 2008

I know that this is been asked a couple of times, but I didn't have the problem at the time and didn't read the responses. Now I have them - pesky little nates in my kitchen and one bathroom. I've set out the little traps I've heard of (apple cider vinagar and dish soap) and I've gotten a bunch with that - but it seams like they just keep coming back. How do I make them go away??

What can I do next?

Since you mentioned the soap and vinegar traps, I assume you mean gnats or fruit flies?
You may already do some/all of these things, but I will mention everything I can think of, just in case. :-)
If it's fruit flies you have, you will need to be sure to rinse all fresh fruit and vegetables as you bring them home, and then store them where the bugs can't get to them (in the fridge, or in sealed bowls or baggies, etc.).
Make sure your trash cans are thoroughly cleaned--you can use a little bleach in water to remove any residue that may be attracting or feeding the flies.
Don't let empty food containers or cans sit uncovered in your kitchen, or even in your trash cans. Same with food--especially fruit and veggie leftovers, peels, cores, etc. Take trash out at least daily, more often if necessary.
Don't let unwashed dishes sit, either--especially if they have bits of fruit, vegetables, or ketchup on them.
Continue using the traps--as you can tell, they do help.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Make sure you keep all fruits and vegetables in the fridge. This is so important when it comes to knats. Also, if you have any herbs such as living basil or rosemary, etc. you will want to find an alternative as knats attract to herb plants. After removing all those things, give it time and they should eventually disappear.

Hi, S.! My last advice for gnats was to put some Listerine mouthwash in a spray bottle and spray it around doors, windows, in the bathroom, under the sinks, the garbage can, counters....wherever..it works great for me and I had a HUGE gnat problem because my house is surrounded by trees and bushes (small wooded area)...it also gets rid of mosquitos! If you are gardening or outside for whatever reason, you can also spray it on yourself. It was a cheap way for me to get rid of them, and it won't harm you or the children! You can even buy the small sample bottle at Walgreens or a dollar store if you don't want to buy a full-size bottle. Good luck!

Hi S., My Mom was talking about something that you plug into the outlets across the room from one another. Apparantly there are two and I'm thinking it must be some kind of positive negative ion sort of deal. She said that they have them at Bed Bath and Beyond. She wants to go shopping today, so if I see it I will send you more specifics later, as I do not know the actual name of the product.

Pour some bleach down each of your drains.
Also, wash your fruits and vegetable when you bring them home. Especially bananas. They are notorious for carrying fruit fly and gnat eggs.
