On-line Classes

As a HR professional, I would suggest you look into any class approved by SHRM (society for human management). Go to shrm.org
If you want a HR certificate, DePaul has a great program and a lot of satelite locations.

You can also see what's available at your community college. Truman and the other chicago com colleges offer online. Truman also has a daycare for students, and later hours.
I did all prerequisites for a master's degree through Truman and the others, saving us a TON of money.

I completed my degree online through West Texas A & M University. They accepted almost all of my transfer hours.
I recommend that you look for in-state schools that will offer online classes. There are no "short cuts" to getting a respected degree, but not having to physically go to a campus was really perfect for me.

My sister in law completed her accounting degree with University of Phoenix and was satisfied.

Check out your local community college. Most all schools offer online degrees now and that way if you do need something from on campus, you're right there in town. I also know a few people that have had great success w/the U of Phoenix program.

There are many reputable online programs through colleges. If you want to have a valid degree, it is important that the institution is accredited. There are six accreditation agencies in the US that accredit schools depending on their geographic location. Schools go through rigorous visits from these agencies to maintain quality standards. I've worked at two universities, and whenever they visit, it's always a big deal to make sure everything is in order. Personally I had a good experience with a U of Phoenix online course. I took it to transfer back to my home institution b/c I had moved away and only had a few classes remaining. I found a comparable course online and they accepted it b/c U of P was accredited. You sound like me:) Kaplan is a great online university, I just completed two courses over a 10 week period. Some of the other online schools expect you to finish in less than 10 weeks. That's difficult when you have a family, working and knowing that the traditional university takes 14-16 weeks to complete. Go for it...it will be the best decision you have ever made.

Here is my advice based on my experiences at both schools.

University of Phoenix is NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY. There are many websites out there bashing the school. And during my time taking their online classes, the students were rude to the teacher (I know its online but still) and one student plagerized another students work and blamed everyone else for it...and didn't get repremanded. Also, I ran out of student loan money within a few months. They charge outrageous fees.

My recommendation is the school I currently attend. UML aka University of Massachusetts Lowell. They have a good program, aren't afraid to fail you (UoP has a bad rep of not failing any students whatsoever) if you don't do the work.... They are a public school and their classes for 3 credit hours are about $990 + a $30 (per semester) fee. So, for 2 classes I pay $2010 a semester which doesn't go beyond my student loans. The teachers are nice, friendly and willing to assist you (at least what I've noticed so far) and are fair in their grading.

Sadly, online "colleges" has become a commodity and anyone can establish a college--you have to make sure that you research the school and that they are accredited in the state.
