Ok, this is such a silly question, but I was wondering what people's take on getting your hair colored (foiled) when you are pregnant is? I am due in 3 weeks and know I will not have time to go once the baby is born, so I wanted to make an appointment to get it done before hand. Any one have an opinion on this one? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I was told that all coloring products are now safe for you to use once you are out of the first trimester. I would go ahead and do it. Pamper your self now while you can. My two daughters are 16 months apart and I love to be able to just go by myself for a small pampering session every couple of months. Good luck and best wishes!

I am a hair stylist. Most dyes are safe now, but foils are still the best way to go because it doesn't come in contact with your skin.

Hi C.!

I asked the same question to my ob/gyn when I was prego. She said to do whatever makes you feel good! And so I did get a couple of foils throughout the pregnancy...and everything was fine. Go ahead and add a pedicure to your day, you'll appreciate the pretty looking toes when you're delivering your special arrival!

From what I understand the reason not to color hair or do perms when pregnant is because it may not take the way you wanted it too and something to do with the chemicals. The best way to find out for sure is to ask your hairdresser and possibly your doctor.

I am a blonde always have been but when I was pregnant it started coming in BLACK and I looked crazy so I dyed my own hair and never had a problem. After the pregnancy I returned to my natural hair color.

I am willing to bet every celebrity dyes their hair. They all look so good pregnant and have no flaws.

Everyone I know that has either tried this or works in the profession says that your hormones and body chemistry are so different when you are pregnant that the results can be BAD... so if you are brave, give it a shot, but just know that you might have to plan on cutting off a lot of hair if it turns green, etc. Most of my friends that have tried coloring or perms have said that they didn't take (and they were disappointed that they spent the money fruitlessly).

Good luck if you decide to give it a try. Personally, I know you will be tired (of course) after the baby is born, but I'd wait and do it afterward. There has to be a time when someone can watch the baby while it's sleeping so you can go get your hair done!

It is fine. I am a hairstylist and I have colored my own hair and others while I was pregnant. The smell of the bleach may make you a little nauseous, but that's about it. Hair color doesn't absorb into your scalp it just penetrates the hair. Especially with highlighting , it doesnt even come in contact with your scalp.

It is definitely ok to get your hair colored now. Just make sure the area is well ventilated so you don't breathe in any fumes. It used to be a faux-pas to get your hair colored when pregnant, because the dyes used to contain lead but they no longer do. If you want to be extra safe, ask to use a vegetable based dye.

If you're concerned about the chemicals entering your bloodstream, it's fine to color using foil, as the colour doesn't touch your scalp. Some women continue to colour on the scalp during pregnancy as there is no definitive research confirming damage to the fetus but it is generally avoided and advised against by hairdressers to be on the safe side. Another note of caution: about 4 inches of your hair from the scalp can be more resistant or can respond differently to colour, since it's grown out of your head from a different hormonal environment. So your hairdresser can't assume she can use the same formula as a previous time. If he/she does, she should just keep an extra eye on the timing in case it is responding more slowly or quickly.
Make the appointment soon; my girls both came 3 weeks early, and I have bad hair baby pictures!

Hi C.,
I know it's totally the mom's choice when coloring hair, but I've heard that due to hormones, etc., the color it turns out to be may not be what you want it to be. I was too scared to try it during my pregnancies! :)

All over color is safe once you are out of your first trimester. Foiling is generally safer all around, because the dye doesn't sit directly on your scalp, and therefore can't be absorbed into the skin on your head. (I read this in a baby book, talked to my stylist and my OB/GYN...all agreed.) Enjoy and take care of yourself!

C.,
I asked my ob/gyn about getting my hair foiled while pregnant and he said it is fine just as long as it is in a well ventilated shop. Also keep in mind that due to all the hormonal changes the highlights might not take, so have your hairdresser do a sample foil first.
Good luck on the new baby!
