Hey Moms,
I need your help on these weird syptoms, because this is my first pregnancy and my mom who I would normally ask lives in Califonia, so probably isnt even awake yet, lol.

Well just yesterday my midwife called with the results from my glucose and blood test. My glucose was fine, but she said I tested as being really anemic. (which would explain why I have been SO tired). Ok, so I got some iron pills to start taking. I am also taking calcium pills which she said I should because I am lactose intolerant and cant drink milk. BUT... I cant take either of those at the same time of eachother OR my prenatal. SO prenatal at night, calcium in the morning, and iron at lunch. She also has me taking something for my heartburn. Well then, I started coming down with a cold (sore throat and ears, sneezing, headache, etc). I didnt know what I can take with all that, but I know Tylenol is fine while pregnant so I have been taking Tylenol cold. Ladies, am I on too many things!? I am kinda freaking out because I dont want to hurt the baby, and I know the iron, calcium, and prenatal are just vitamins, but still. I guess I am just paranoid.

The weird thing though, is that I am at work right now and my left shoe started feeling tight, so I looked down and my left foot is swelling up like a balloon!! There are marks from my shoes, and just the whole ankle and top of the foot is SO swollen! I know swelling is normal in pregnancy, but why only my left foot? My right foot is fine. Also my left rings are really tight, but my right hand seems to be ok. Is this normal?? I may just be going crazy paranoid because it is my first pregnancy, but just want some reassurance. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Swelling in both feet and hands is normal. however I didn't really have that untill I was 8 months. Face swelling is something to be concerned about. Don't know about swelling on one side...I think I would call my doctor. Don't automatically assume it's the vitimens. Let the dr check you out.

Take care....

OK- Skip the iron pill and eat TOTAL cereal. Regular Total cereal has more elemental iron than iron pills which takes much longer to absorb into your system. You can try this at home- absorb some water into a bowl of Total and put a magnet underneath- you can literally pull out the iron. This iron will take care of your anemia- that’s one pill down :-) Good luck!

You need to go to a doctor so that you can be tested for various things that can happen during a pregnancy. Swelling during pregnancy is completely normal. However, pregnant women are at risk for developing gestational diabetes, which can be dangerous to the mother and the baby. There is no reason to panic, but pregnant women who get regular prenatal care in a doctor's office are normally screened for gestational diabetes so that it can be treated and so that the doctors can watch for any signs of trouble. Your ob/gyn can recommend the types of cold medicine that will be ok to take during pregnancy. Get yourself to a regular doctor and get good prenatal care to ensure the best health of you and your baby. Also, if you are lactose intolerant, you can try drinking 2% milk and add plenty of yogurt to your diet to ensure you get sufficient calcium, both for you and your baby. The baby will get what it needs, and if you do not get enough calcium in your body, you will be at risk for osteoporosis when you are older.

Hi D.! I'm due with my first in June also! June 12th to be exact.

I am also on Iron (for anemia), prenatal, and I was just diagnosed last week with gestational diabetes. Sounds like you were tested for that and you are not. What I would do is call your doctor just to make sure everything is OK as far as your swelling. I know that we are going to be retaining water, but we also haven't been through this and are concerned when something like this happens and do not know what is the right amount of swelling, etc.! :)

I did work with a girl that started getting puffy in places like her fingers, feet, face, etc. and hers was actually the start of preeclampsia (high blood pressure). She had to be monitored more closely...stay off her feet...she was fine...and had the baby a few weeks ago and is home with her little girl doing very well!

I think where people get in trouble is when they feel like they are bugging the Dr. or calling too much. If we ignore our issues or concerns then that is not good for us or the baby...that is why they get paid the amount they do to deal with us crazy hormonal pregnant people!! :)

Just call to put your mind at ease about the swelling and the cold. The other stuff you (and I) are taking are just vitamins so don't worry about those.

Good luck!

I had a severe cold around the same time in my pregnancy as you are (my little girl will be one in June). I was allowed to take Sudafed - just the regular version. I went to the dr., and he prescribed nose spray, but you can save your self the trip and get a saline spray.

I don't know about the swelling. When was the last time you got your BP checked? Can you prop your feet up on a box or something?

Feel better soon.
