I am making beef soup - I accidently added the paper that the beef comes packed on top of to the pot and simmered it with the beef for quite awhile before noticing. Do you think that that piece of paper or plastic or whatever it is has contaminated the soup???

Do you think it is OK to eat?

What can I do next?

Yes, it's still safe to eat! IF there are any toxic substances in the paper/plastic there are not enough in there to cause a problem. When you think about it, studies have shown that one has to consume lots and lots of anything (usually more than one person would consume in a lifetime) to have a toxic affect. So.....you don't plan to do this every week? lol Yes, go ahead and eat it.

I'm not sure about that, but I can tell you, that the first time I made a turkey, I forgot to take out the bag that the nasty giblets and liver is in, and I baked it the whole time in the turkey, and we ate the turkey anyway. We are all still alive!! I will be reading your responses!!

I have done almost the same thing but it was a crock pot. Called the supermarket butcher, he laughed and said it was ok. We ate it but I don't know....

I would say that I don't think they would use paper that was dangerous to your health on food. I wouldn't suggest doing it again, but do you really think it will make you sick? I would say probably not.

Theoretically no . . . due to the heat possibly causing stuff in the paper to deteriorate into the food.

Practically I'd probably taste it and go from there. :P

Jus' sayin!!!!!

I've done this when I wasn't able to pull it off a frozen roast or whatever when I've put it in the crockpot. I usually just let it "cook" long enough for it to peel off, but I've never even noticed a change in taste. I wouldn't do it often, though. (And I probably wouldn't eat it if the paper got left on long enough to break apart. I've done that, too. Pizza night!)
