Odd Looking Stools

My son recovered from a bacterial infection (Campylobactor), and his stools were back to solid (he was also tested to ensure he was over it and results were negatinve for the bacteria). Now his stools have soften and they still have an odd consistancy to them (no blood), but they seem to have soft whitish-sunflower sized pieces and darker "chunks" in the pastey BM's. He's going to the doc's next week Tuesday, but in the mean time I thought I'd seem if anyone online had anything similar ever. The stools are also very smelly. Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this!

So What Happened?

Well I mentioned everyone's advice to the doctor on my son's 18 month check up last week (my sitter had suggested maybe too much fiber/ my dad suggested maybe a parasite)... and the doctor suggested maybe it was the antibiotic causing an after effect of an intolerance to dairy... so now we're minus the milk and he's become solid again and the stools are starting to look and smell more normal, though the sitter said Friday he had another multicolored one, he hasn't looked the way they did before.

My fingers are crossed that this doens't last too long, as he cries whenever I break out the milk... he misses it! (It's also very hard to do over his diet, as we did alot of pasta's with cheese sauces/dairy cream sauces)...

If he doesn't completely return to normal, then, my doctor says he'll try testing him for a parasite (maybe Giardia...)...

Hope everyone else is doing well,
J.

Sounds like a yeast infection from the abx. Try cutting out the white flour, refined white sugar (or all sugar), and corn syrup from his diet. Give him lots of probiotic foods like Stoneyfield yogurt and kefir. Maybe try giving him acidophilus and/or bifidus (you can get capsules at the health food store).

Does he go to the bathroom 1 or 2 times a day without struggling? My 2 yr old was put on Miralax last month and it works wonders.

Hi J.
I am sorry to hear about your son. I am glad he is doing better though. I have a client that her children has a acid disorder. I do not know much but I know that she had a similar story and she had her child's blood tested. The stool was very smelly and if she did not change the baby with in a few minutes the acid in the stool would cause a serious rash. Not sure if this is it but maybe it is something to ask about. Hope this helps.

Something similar actually happened to me soon after I had surgery. I called my doctor and they said that it was just the antibiotics getting out of my system. As long as there is no blood everything should be normal and might last a month or so. Hope this helped you out!
