Hello,
I am in school and am taking this Issues in Nursing class. There was a question about Obamacare on a quiz and I cannot even locate the info in the text. The final is tomorrow and I'm trying to understand this topic. Basically I was just wondering is Obamacare considered a single payer type of insurance? Is obamacare universal healthcare? Would everyone be entitled to it or is it only the people who don't already have insurance through an employer? With obamacare would we be getting rid of medicare/medicaid? Please forgive me for my ignorance :) Thanks all!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone! For Loving M...and explanation is this is my .5 unit class that is nothing in comparison to my actual core courses. This was a quiz I had weeks ago and the only one I got wrong, there is no such thing as a take home anything in my world, and I'm not even sure if this info will be on final, no cheating. I was just curious of what the answer was and after my search got me over a million hits and since im in the midst of drowning in other hw, I asked for help on this site. For the time being this is what I am more focused on and know: fetal heart rates, what accelaration, decels, variability, what interventions are needed, when baby is in trouble, the uses for every major drug prescribed, what side effects are, when contraindicated, what types of iv soln are compatible when admin iv, the etiology of every major disease, the interventions for each one and what intervention is most appropriate. That is just a small portion of my studies. When I have more time I will do my research on the obamacare. I know there is a lot very smart people on this site who are well educated and know a great deal about policies and that is why I asked the ques here. Just to clarify I'm not positive if the ques was exactly worded universal or obama...sorry

If you professor really called it Obamacare, you should gently inform him or her that it's called the Affordable Care Act. Those who are being trained to become health care professionals should be taught what the act is actually called.

Don't worry - our legislators don't understand it either. :P

It's known as the Affordable Care Act.

Here's a site I found with lots of info: http://www.healthcare.gov/law/index.html

I'm surprised you are in college and do not have the basic the study skills to research this much publicized topic. I'm also surprised your professor asked a question about "Obamacare" as that is the slang term created by the Republican party to, effectively, minimize it's importance and give it a negative connotation. I'm sure your professor is intelligent enough to understand the legislation the President is putting forward is not actually called "Obamacare."

That being said, I'll help you cheat on your exam, if you in fact do have one coming up. I'm sure you are looking for the facts and not op-ed, so here are two easily found, reliable sources that will outline President Obama's Plan for Health Care Reform and provide you the facts to answer your question correctly.

Of course, it's not in your nursing text books. If you continue through college, you are well advised to know that many exam questions are not found directly answered in a text book, because it is not high school anymore. You are expected to think out of the box now. Good luck.

I'm curious as to why there would be a question about "Obamacare" on a quiz for a nursing class when Health Care Reform is not even called "Obamacare", except for by people who are glaringly opposed to it.
You will likely be finding it difficult to find answers in the text as "Obamacare" technically doesn't exist.

Perhaps it's a trick question that is meant to prompt you to do some further research.

I obtained my Life and Health Insurance license in 2001. I had to pass a state test as well as tests for continuing education credits. The tests were loaded with trick questions.

I think you may be looking for information under the wrong topic.

Best wishes.

Oh man is this a hot topic!
I'll bet you 50 cents spewing / name calling will be a factor in the responses you get.

It's not a single payer system - although a single payer system is what we need - single payer would give us the largest possible group to negotiate prices.
It's not universal health care - it's universal health insurance (again, not what we need) - and although it gets more people insured, I still don't think it covers everybody.
Employers are tired of dealing with healthcare - one fear (there are many) is that being able to more easily obtain health insurance outside of employment will encourage employers to stop providing it.
Employer based health insurance is inefficient and too many fall through the cracks - the young, the old, the disabled, the unemployed - it's even difficult if your self employed.
There are debates about whether it will have the effect of increasing or decreasing medicare/medicaid.
You can Google a lot of information which is skewed all over the place.
The propaganda (check who's lobbying the hardest to keep the status quo) is amazing.
Death panels, socialized medicine (France has this, Canada and the UK do not).
People fear change and the unknown.

I get tired of hearing 'this isn't free'.
No kidding.
The thing is - Americans spend more on health insurance and health care than any other country in the world and we get the least bang for the buck - and people are actually arguing/fighting to continue and keep being over charged and under serviced.
We're like panic'd horses running INTO a burning barn.

I've found this site to be helpful in explaining:

Oh why would they ask about Obamacare!! Do you guys get how laughable talking about the name is. In my office calling it Obamacare is being polite and didn't the President himself say he likes the name?

S'anyway, the problem with the law is no one really knows how it will function, that is the fundamental problem with the law. Sure they will say it isn't single payer and it would appear structurally it is not but it can easily become a single payer in practice.

That is your answer in a nutshell if they are looking for the medical point of view. It can be all of that or none of that depending on how it is implemented. In other words your questions can't be accurately answered for another two or more years. It will eat up, change up or destroy whatever it needs to be functional.

The Affordable Care Act (where do you go to school, at Tea Party University?) it is not single payer. No it is NOT universal health care by a long shot (I wish it was). Universal health care is what all the OTHER developed nations have. Not everyone will be entitled to it. Supposedly for those who cannot afford privatized insurance (which we still have through all same private insurers as always) there will be a way to afford some coverage-not sure how that works yet. No it will not get rid of medicare/medicaid.

Please don't feel like you are ignorant. This stuff is pretty complicated.

Take a look at this and see if it helps. I know it's not a single payer system, but I think your answer is specifically in here (I just don't have time today to go through it for you.)

It is not single payer. It won't immediately take over medicare/ medicaid. It will decrease the amount of money that goes to medicare/ medicaid.
