Nutella

My 4 year old is ADDICTED to peanut butter... but we recently found out she's allergic to peanuts. Unreal. She can have things processed in the same factories as peanuts, but she can't have flat out peanuts or [tear!] peanut butter. She's bummed. I bought nutella thinking that would be a nice alternative, since it's made from hazelnuts instead of peanuts, but this stuff is super sweet! It's got cocoa in it! Maybe this wasn't a good alternative after all... or is it? What do you know/love/hate about nutella?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Where can I find the almond and cashew butter? That sounds better already. I didn't even know such things existed, I TOTALLY appreciate it ladies!

I make my kids add nutella to regular peanut butter on the sandwich so they do not get too much sweet. IOtherwise it goes too quickly and they get the super sweet--just what they want anyway. :) I plan to try sunflower butter since I have read about it so often here but it is not in a store by my house. One day I will remember when out shopping somewhere else.

Almond or cashew butter could be a substitiute or they also make sunbutter or sunflower seed butter. I have them and they are all good if she can tolerate them.

Nutella is yummy, but not healthy at all. I had it overseas first and thought it was awesome til I read the label. I have given my son almond butter and sunflower seed butter. I have gotten them both at the regular grocery store. Super target, kroger, Trader Joes is good if you have those nearby. Trader Joes has lots of alternative healthy foods for half the price as other places. Depending on your store, it might be right next to the peanut butter, or it might be over in the organic/healthy section. Just like regular peanut butter, just check the label and make sure it isn't loaded with sugar or high fructose corn syrup. Just a little bit of salt, and if it is sweetened, it is best if it is sweetened with honey. If your regular grocery store doesn't carry any of them, ask them to. Ours will start carrying stuff on request, and they would be foolish not to carry alternative nut butters with all the food allergies these days.

Why not get her almond butter? Just like peanut butter but made from almonds. Its delicious, too! :)
I would say no to the nutella as a substitute. It has lots of added sugar which can cause cavities, hyper tendencies etc.
Good luck! :)

If you want a nut free alternative you can but I AM HEALTHY (peanut butter alternative) at the grocery store. http://www.soynutbutter.com/

after 35 years of eating peanut butter, my husband developed an allergy. He is picky but will likes and will eat this brand :)

PS if you want to try other nut butters they can be found in the "natural health" section of grocery stores or on a shelf in the peanut butter aisle.

You can try stores like Whole Foods or you can make your own almond butter. Roast the nuts in the oven for about 10 minutes, let them cool, and then whirl them in the food processor with a pinch of salt and a tiny bit of canola oil or even roasted almond oil until they're the consistency you want. Then just store in the fridge. Makes a great substitute in peanut butter cookies!

I've seen almond butter at Costco too. It does taste a little different, but is pretty good. Some of the bigger grocery stores probably carry it as well as specialty stores, maybe Trader Joe's?

Target carries almond butter-not sure about others. Whole Foods, Sprouts, Costco all have it.

My daughter loves Nutella. It is just something different that she uses.

As for Almond and cashew butter...... I go to Market Street in Allen all the time for my shopping. They have a set up where you make your own right there. There is a see through canister type contraption, you put the bowl under it and you have instant almond or cashew butter.

I don't use this but it is VERY popular at Market Street.

EDIT: I see now that you are not in my area and probalby don't have a Market Street. A place like Whole Foods should have the same set up.

So sorry that your daughter is allergic to peanuts...peanut butter is a staple food in my house too!
Anyway, as an alternative I don't know if Nutella is the best choice due to it's high sugar content. One serving of Nutella has the equivalent of 4 teaspoons of sugar.
You could simply try another alternative such as cashew or almond butter if she's not allergic to those nuts. They are just as good if not better for you than peanut butter and they taste great and are a good subsitute.
Enjoy!

I bought Nutella as well. I think its ok but not as nutritious as I thought. Can she have almond butter? I have heard that thats really good and healthy. Check whole foods or Trader Joes for peanut butter alternatives.

Hi R.,
My sister in law tells a horrible story about a summer trip she took to Germany when in high school.

She'd never had Nutella before, and once she tasted it, she fell in love and ate it daily, and came back home 20 pounds heavier!!!

Just because it's packaged and marketed like peanut butter, you still need to use *discipline,* like anything else that's yummy! :-0

Take care,
t

oh lordy, i am foreign born and had never had peanut butter until i came to the states (late twenties), and boy did i hate it. i tried it once and took me the whole day to get rid of the aftertaste. something inside my throat after tasting it (still feel like puking thinking about it)
BUT
i was raised on nutella. goodness good awesome dear sweet nutella. first thing in the morning, creppes with nutella. ohhh. very good. nice choice. but in moderation. i had it probably once a day. either for dinner or breakfast. you can spread it on bread with a nice cold cup of milk. for reference, europeans love nutella, and no many overweight people there. so, i say nice choice for your child.
i have tried to get my kids to replace PB with nutella, and they're not going for it. very strange as they love chocolate. oh well, more for moi.
