Nursing Sling/wraps

Loved my hotsling. Not as versital as a wrap but so simple I liked it better. Takes a few tries to learn how it should feel and fit.

I have a baby k'tan sling, and it is awesome. I bought it at the Mommy and Me store at Shawnee Mission Medical Center last year. I traveled to Seattle when my youngest was 9 weeks old and used it a lot, even nursed him in it. It is two big thick rings of fabric that you can wear lots of different ways depending on the size of the baby and how you want them positioned, and it really grew with him. I have washed mine many times now and it still retains its shape. Great for wearing out for walking around, errands, or around the house if they are fussy! First can I just say I am so excited that you are going to nurse and wear your baby! It's the best feeling when you carry around a snuggly, sleepy teeny one....just the BEST! For nursing I recommend a ring sling since you lay them in a cradle position and you can use the tail to cover up for more privacy. I have a ring sling, moby wrap, mei tai and a beco butterfly 2 - one of each time of carrier out there :)
Here is my rundown:
Ring Sling - Great for nursing in public and wearing a tiny one. Great for carrying around for small amounts of time, but not so good for say, a trip around the mall long term.
Moby Wrap - LOVE this for newborn stage-6 months or so! This is the most versatile of all of them since it is a wrap. It has the longest learning curve though - but it only took me 1 week to really get the feel of how to use it. You can nurse very discreetly in it and it is super comfy. But since it is made of stretchy material it can't be worn past 22 pounds before it starts sagging.
Mei Tai - My favorite right now for my 21 pound 6 month old! You can nurse in a mei tai, but not as easily as in the moby wrap or ring sling. But a Mei Tai is so comfy and you could even carry your 3 year old in it if you needed :) I have a GLORY BABY MEI TAI and love it to BITS. It has padded waist and padded shoulder straps and is made custom just for you so you pick out the fabric. There are no buckles so you do have to learn how to tie it, but it is super easy to learn! Plus, the lack of buckles means anyone any size can wear it super easy!
Beco Butterfly 2 - This is like the Baby Bjorn except the baby faces you and not out. I personally like it better than the Bjorn cause it is better for the baby's hip development to be held in a sitting position than dangling. I also love how easy it is to wear my son on my back in the Beco. It is so comfy that I wear my 2 year old in it if she is getting tired on long trips when we are walking :)

I reccomend the Mei Tai since it will last the longest, or the Moby :)

I made my own wrap and got instructions on the different ways to wrap it online. It has been 2 years but I'm sure if you search sites on wraps you will find something. I just searched baby wraps and slings and lots of info popped up. I went to Jo Anns and picked out a soft cotton stretch material(tshirt type) and had them cut around 4-5 yards(depends on how big you are) After getting it home I cut that in half or thirds length wise and had 2 or 3 slings!(fabric is different widths, the kind I got was wide enough for 2 but a friend of mine bought some that was wide enough for 3) This cost me less than $20 & if you buy one already made it cost $30-$60! There is no need for sewing the material doesn't shred or anything. Hope I didn't confuse you and good luck with whatever you decide. I loved my wrap. I actually am a hairdresser and wore my little girl while I worked for my first month back! It was great!

I love my baby Ktan wrap. I've used the Moby and the Ktan is like it, but faster.

I would suggest a sling, too. I don't have one yet, but am planning to get one as I'm due 4 weeks from today with our second baby girl. We had a Baby Bjorn type thing with our first, but the slings are supposed to be much better for their joints and temperament. http://www.babysosmart.com/

I used a Maya wrap with my son and absolutey LOVED it! It was great for nursing in public (the tail offers GREAT privacy) and it was pretty easy to figure out how to use. Mine came with a DVD to show you different ways to carry your child - if you can sew, their website has easy directions to follow to make your own.

I have to say that after around a year I didn't think my son would be in his wrap anymore. He was almost two and had double ear infections (VERY cranky/fussy). I noticed the wrap in the closet and thought "What the heck" - being in the wrap as a baby had ALWAYS comforted him - I put it on and him in it. He quieted right down! It was certainly a little more awkward having a two year old than an infant, but it still worked great!

I used a Maya Wrap from 5 weeks on. I LOVED that it allowed for many positions: snuggled on my chest/shoulder, nursing, cradle hold, and as he got bigger- on the hip. I also really used the big zippered pocket ALL the time.

I loved my Maya wrap. It took awhile for me to figure out how to nurse while using it, but anymore, you can get instructions on youtube. I also like a Mai Tai for when they are a little bigger and have head control.

I have a homemade ring sling. It was made following the pattern on the Maya wrap site. I really like it and use it to nurse and wear my baby. If I was going to do it again I think I would just buy a lightly padded model. Its easy to adjust and carry baby in differant positions. If you live in Wichita, I would suggest calling Lorna with La Leche (contact info on the LLLI website.) She has differant syles and size available to try on. If not go to a La Leche meeting and ask. We had a meeting where everybody brought their wrap and slings. It was fun and educational.

PS. I had the same kiddage. A 3(almost 4)DS and a 4 month DD.

Sleepy Wrap! Great for women of all sizes and babies of all ages. Versatile to use as a front, rear, side wearing wrap. Terrific for discreet nursing. No strain on your back, either. Good luck!
