Nursing Covers - Lees Summit,MO

I am trying to decide what kind of cover to use for nursing. I like the ones that have an open neckline with a piece that sticks out and keeps it open. But I also like the total coverage of a poncho. Does anyone know of something that is both? I am extremely modest so just throwing a blanket over my shoulder for the baby to kick off at a moments notice is not an option. Neither is nursing clothing. Expensive and same issue, if something distracted him he would pop off and I'd be exposed. So I really want to get a cover up but not sure what everyone has had success with.

I did have a friend who nursed her kids say that she'd used just a regular cover that had loose fabric at neckline (not the one that stays open) and she said she wished she woudl have invested in a poncho that covers all the way around. So that has me thinking what is out there.

thanks moms

I was in the same position you are. I had my 3rd baby 11 months ago. First one I have nursed. I am very modest and was scared to death to nurse in public. I bought a hooter hider. I tried it a couple of times but felt even more ridiculous with that apron over me. So, this is what I did. I bought 2 nursing tank tops at Target. One black and one white. I wear those all the time and when I go in public I wear another shirt over the nursing tank top. When baby has to nurse I pull up my top shirt and the nursing tank top comes down only exposing the breast that is needed. The baby is latched on and my top shirt cover my breast and the nursing tank top cover everything below. If the baby pops off I simple push my shirt down so I am never exposed. Not an inch of skin is ever revealed and most people think she is just sleeping. They can't even tell I am nursing. Now with the hooter hider everyone knew what was going on. I have only had one comment about breastfeeding in public. This little old lady came up to me in a restaurant and said it was so nice to see a nursing baby.

Hooter hiders - hands down the best imo. And I have used quite a few! They have the piece that sticks out and keeps it open a little like you are referring to, and they are super long/big for excellent coverage. I have never had an issue with being exposed and my little guy is easily distracted! I always feel very comfortable nursing in public when I have my hooter hider.

I used Bebe au Lait/Hooter Hider (same thing, different name, sold by same company). They are big, and if you angle them over a shoulder, you can get coverage and also still see your kid. Something to consider is in the summer, a poncho might be stuffy. Practice. I never got brave enough to nurse without it, but I felt pretty covered with it. Bebe au Lait covers are bigger than the knockoffs. Look for a sale and buy the real ones. But don't put them in the dryer. Line dry. I had 2, one to wash and one to use. You don't have to wash them all the time, but if, say baby urps and you use your cover, well... :) They lasted 2.5 years and DD still uses them for superhero capes.

Hooter Hiders without a doubt... if you are very anxious about nursing in public then make sure you practice with the cover at home for a while first! I was not a "public nurser" b/c I was not comfortable being exposed in public, but would nurse my son with family present and used the Hooter Hider without any issue.
