Not Rolling over Yet

I have a son who will be 7 months on the 29th. He has rolled from back to tummy ONE time and will not go tummy to back. I put him on his tummy and try to work with him with toys, etc. but he just gets really mad when he's on his stomach. At his six month check up his pediatrician said he was perfectly fine and would start to do this shortly. Is there anything I can be doing to move him along, shouldn't he be doing this by now? He's had a rough way to go with multiple ear infections and still not sleeping through the night maybe that plays a part to.

What can I do next?

Like someone else said... every baby is different.

My son didn't roll over till 8 months (did it constantly for a week... the novelty must have worn off and he barely did it after that until much older)... he didn't crawl (not in the traditional way on all 4's) till 12 months -- he was mobile in his own goofy way though. He didn't walk until 16 months.

I wouldn't worry too much. Like your ped said... he'll do it soon enough. Just keep doing what your doing... if he gets mad enough on his belly when he does get rolled over - he'll roll back I bet :D I would just keep putting things just out of reach... just enough that when he stretches to grab it, he forces a roll. Not to worry though, he'll get it and then you'll be wondering why you wanted him to get moving soo fast - LOL once he starts he'll never stop :D

If you're worried about it and it sounds like you are. Call First Steps. They can do an evaluation. I think it's even free for the evaluation. They will send someone to you and have you answer a bunch of questions and interact with the baby. That way if they say he's fine you have 2 opinions. If they think he could use some help learning to roll over, then they can let you know that too. :-) I'm sure he's fine and they can ease your fears.

My daughter rolled over at 4 months, was crawling at 6 months and starting to walk at 8 months. But every baby is different. Here is a link on babies rolling over:

Some babies skip the rolling stage & go straight to crawling. If your doctor says not to worry, then don't! My baby is very small, and everyone comments on how small she is. She is only in the 10% for height & weight and I used to worry terribly! But my doctor said she is fine and don't worry. As mother's we worry though, and it is hard not to! My point is that the doctor knows best, and if he says your son is fine then try not to worry. Every baby is different and does things at their own pace. Good luck!

Hi, M.! Both my sons started rolling over around 5-6 months and crawled at 10 months. My first son walked at 14 months and we are still waiting for our second to walk!! (he is 13 months old) Try not to worry too much, he will do things when he is ready to. My boys both hated to be on their tummy as well. As long as your pediatrician is not concerned about it, I would try not to stress about it. I know, easier said than done!! All my best.

Hi M.-

I feel your pain on the ear infections, my son had two set of tubes by the time he was 3, but still rolled over around 4 or 5 months...that shouldn't be affecting him. My nephew, who is 5 months, isn't rolling either, but largely because his momma never puts him down long enough to let him!

I wouldn't worry about it. My son didn't walk until 15 months and I was worried it would never happen. But it did and my worry was energy not well spent. Let him do these things on his own time, he's done it once so you know he's capable, use your worry energy and put it to something more productive!
