Not Hungry and Forcing Myself to Eat.

For about two weeks now I haven't been real hungry and I have been forcing myself to eat. I am very active and have been for most of my life so i drink lots of water. Allthough i did cut down on my water intake as per my nutrtionist. I try to eat a few times a day so i bring snacks to work with me. i have maybe one or two bites and either throw the rest away or give it to a friend. Today i had a small cup of coffee and half a bagle (gave the other half away), three crackers and some celery sticks. I'm not stressed so don't know why i'm not hungry. My family and co-workers are worried about me. My next step is the doctor. Any other suggestions would be helpful.

Thank you in advance

You know that having no appetite is not healthful or normal. The only time I lost appetite is when I was pregnant/ nauseated and when I was deeply anguished over my daughter's sickness. If life is good for you, perhaps you should see a doctor. AF

Well, my only advice is eat things with a little more nutritional value. It sounds like the things you are eating are all carbs. Celery does not have much nutritional value either. If you like to snack, try a handful of nuts, blueberries, yogurt, string cheese, or an orange. How about a hardboiled egg? If you are not eating much, at least eat things that are really healthy. If it continues, I would check with your doctor. You just never know. Good Luck! I would love to have your problem. Instead, my husband brought home a pack of thin mint cookies and I am about to finish the whole box! :)

I go through this a couple of times a year and it seems to happen for different reasons - at least for me. One is my body is fighting something off and it's like I have the "almost flu." Nothing sounds good and I basically have to force myself to eat anything. Two is I am stressed and don't even realize it until later. Three is sometimes I feel like I am in an "anti-growing spurt" - kind of the opposite of when my kids seem to be in a growing spurt and eat everything in sight! Again, I end up forcing myself to eat.

I would certainly check it out with your doctor to make sure that nothing IS wrong, but if he/she medically clears you, I wouldn't worry too much about it. In fact, for me, the more I obsess about how much I haven't eaten that day, the less hungry I am. What I do though is eat every time I AM hungry. Even if it is at 1:00 a.m. in the morning. I keep lots of easy stuff in the house when I go through these periods so the second I am hungry I have something available because often if I have to go through any effort to make it, I am done being hungry by the time it is ready :)

Good luck.

Hi C.,

It sounds like you're malnourished. I know you have consulted a nutritionist but sometimes people miss things. Once we are depleted in our vitamin and mineral intake, we quit craving them. This can cause extreme hunger that causes obesity or it can take your appetite away as well and go to the other extreme.

My suggestion is for you to clean your colon out so any nutrition you are taking in can be absorbed properly. I don't mean to be blunt, but if you are not evacuating after every meal you have a build up in your system that will not allow nutrition to absorb. The other thing is you need to be on an absorbable multivitamin/mineral complex. I can recommend one if you like as well as the cleanse for the colon. This is not uncommon and is usually a quick fix.

Hope I helped!

I agree with MomS. The little that you do eat you should eat very well. The same things happens to me about once every two months. I think it's due to stess. . .but I'm not sure. Eventually my appetite comes back and I resume my regular eating schedule. If the two weeks turns into much longer I would go see a doctor. Are there any other things that are strange? If not he'll probably say the same thing we are and if it gets worse to get back with him. As great as doctors are, if they don't have a lot to go on they can't do much. So evaluate what all is different or strange in your life.

You definitely want to discuss it with your doc. Could it be a side effect of a medicine you are taking? That's my only idea at the moment.

Go to the doctor! Loss of appetite like this can be a medical problem -- insist on a battery of blood tests. I don't want to scare you and this is probably not the problem, but just to stress the importance of you going to the doctor -- my husband couldn't eat when his kidneys began to function improperly. We would go out to eat because we didn't know what to cook at home and sometimes he would order two plates and couldn't eat anything on any of them. You should make sure there is no medical problem before going back to wondering if it is caused by stress, etc.

If I was you,I would ask your doctor to check your thyroid. The reason I say this ,is because I have Graves Disease, which is an overactive thyroid. It was never a popular condition back when I was diagnosed w/it but its more common now. Do u feel depressed, have plenty of energy and then feel exhausted? I have to take medicine for the rest of my life do to mine being over-active. It can go under-active as well,so I get bloodwork done every 3 to 6 months. It's really a serious condition and i hope you do not have it but you really should be checked for it.

C.,
There are nine essential amino proteins you should be getting every day along with vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables.
I personally don't believe in colon cleanses. But I can recommend a great source for a soy protein drink and other supplements if you are interested.
I hope you figure out what is going on. A physical might be a good place to start.

My first thought is "could she be pregnant," like some of the other posters have mentioned, because it sounds a lot like I was both times during my first trimester (no appetite at all). I would definitely see the doctor before too long if you can't rule out pregnancy as it could be another health issue.
Good luck,
M.

I do this sometimes. It's like my body just says, "I've had enough! I don't want any more!" I definately agree to just make sure you're eating healthy, and a good variety of healthy snacks (like MomS said). One thing I love is substituting foods I love for healthy alternatives. I'll warm up a bowl of crushed pineapple and top it with some granola. Maybe instead of coffee, you should try some green mint tea or other herbal tea. You could have a small salad which would give you a variety of nutrients and still feel "light" (it's not a heavy comfort food). Make sure you're taking a good supplement, too. I have problems with most supplements, but I bought a natural supplement where one dose is 2 pills. I take one, and it's half of what I should be getting, but since I'm eating so healthy anyways I don't really worry about that.
