Nook HD for 9 Yr Old

Nook HD is a really good deal right now. If I needed a tablet at this time I'd give it strong consideration.

Two possible concerns:
1. It runs a proprietary version of Android, so you can't necessarily run all standard Android apps. (On the other hand, I've heard you can side load Android on a micro SD card.)
2. Barnes and Noble is planning to discontinue manufacturing the Nook HD and HD+. How well supported they will be in the future is up in the air.

If you live near a Barnes and Noble store, I'd suggest you go in and try the tablet. Try to access the educational websites you're interested in using.

Any tablet would probably work. I know you can put the Nook and Kindle app on our IPad.

Why not go to a Barnes &Noble and try it out? Then go to best buy and try out other tablets and stuff there.
Also, why not use the library for reading materials? Then you aren't accumulating books all the time.
I prefer reading paper books because it's easier on my eyes. Screens are hard on eyes, so to protect her eyesight I would lean toward the library for reading. You can go to cnet.com for reviews on tablets, because apps vary between devices.

I have a Nook Tablet. It's great for reading. The only apps I have are ones I bought through Barnes and Noble. Not sure if you can use others, but you can ask at the store. They have fabulous customer support! They also have Free Fridays. Every Friday there is a book and an app you can download for free. The type of book varies, but the apps are almost always kid friendly. The web browser is fine for reading things. It's not very interactive. The Nook HD is probably better, so you could ask.

I also have an IPad. It's great. But it's also quite expensive (mine came with my job). The Nook HD is under $200, so it's quite incising!

Hope you get some helpful answers. And go to a Barnes and Noble and ask them. They really are helpful.

Definitely go to a B&N in person and have a long talk and demonstration with a Nook salesperson there. My daughter has loved her Nook but she uses it to read and play a few games. Be aware that B&N is discontinuing the Nook, unfortunately, so ask about future support. I am very sorry they're doing away with it because I hate the idea of Kindles -- due to the fact you are locked into Amazon for all your content on those.

I would simply load some good math and homework programs on your home computer and monitor her use. Also, bear in mind that many school systems have online homework these days which increases as kids get older, and she likely won't be able to do that without a real keyboard, which Nooks and Kindles don't have.

Love it! We have 3 in our house. I recently bought ones for my 5 and 7 years olds. They really enjoy them. They are selling the HD+ for $149 right now...you just cannot beat it. They are a ton of Barnes and Noble apps they can use...many are free too. I surf on mine all of the time.

LOVE the Nook HD.
My daughter has one, she is 10.
My son has one he is 7.
They both got it from their Aunty this past Christmas.

It is NOT only for reading books.
But many other things too.
They have an app store etc.
And many are free.
My daughter likes reading on her Nook HD.
Me too.
However, per doing actual school work on it, a computer is best, or a laptop etc.
Some of the websites you go to, keep in mind that you may have to download their app for it. But some may or may not have the app for the Nook or tablets.
The Nook HD however, can be used to view "flash" websites.... which an iPad cannot.
Yes, you need WiFi or an internet connection.
Unless the app does not need that.
Each website is not all the same. Some may need an internet connection to do the website activities, some may not.
It is not the Nook's fault. So to speak.

HOWEVER, I would very much, get a computer or laptop. An Apple/Mac.
Because, her school work or websites they use etc., it is easier and more efficient to do it on a computer.
A Nook, is not a "computer." Per say.
When my kids need to do work for school, and per a website per school requirements, they do it on our laptop.

Again, the Nook is for reading AND apps.
But it won't do what a computer does.
And you cannot print, from a Nook, like you can with a computer.
My daughter said you still need a computer. To do school work.
