I have a friend that has irregular periods and has previously missed her period for six months without being pregnant. Her period has been absent for the past two months. She has taken for pregnancy tests and they have all come back negative. Her and her husband have been trying to get pregnant for the past three years unsuccessfully. They do however have a 5 year old son. She is ready to find the underlying reason for all of the issues, but the problem is that she has no insurance. Does anyone have any suggestions of how she can go about finding out whats wrong and possibly fixing it without insurance.

Thanks in advance!

I cant believe how catty and heartless some of you are. Does that mean that people w/o insurance shouldnt have kids? Well then I shouldnt either! It doesnt make me any less of a parent because of it.

What can I do next?

Hi Trish
BEFORE she has the doctors check her and being as she doesn't have insurance, ask her to read "Take charge of your fertility" this way she can track her cycles and conclude IF she is in fact ovulating... doesn't matter what age, not all women do... and even when and if you have a period, that is not indicative of a woman having ovulated. It 's worth a read and she can check it out at the library if she doesn't want to purchase it.

As for people perhaps suggesting to wait on kids if she doesn't have health insurance. I don't think that is a slam in as much as it might be a good idea to really think about this. With no insurance, medical bills can stack up. I don't think it's a matter of you or your friend not being a good parent, it's more probably people saying, do you think it's really feasible at this time? that's all.
but even so. the book is a good read and whether your friend has a baby or not, it's a good way to really understand the body. I highly recommend it for all women.

good luck!!

Senya is right on. Right now across our country there are MILLIONS of people having children without insurance. While this is a huge problem financially why are we blaming people that simply cannot afford the ridiculous premiums? My husband is in the restaurant business and I am self employed so we have an individual plan for our family of four that costs nearly $1000 per month and pays for NOTHING until we hit $3500 deductible. We have it only to protect our home in the event of a medical emergency. What kind of a joke is that? Until we realize that we are all suffering from the lack of universal healthcare I guess we will have to hear from people judging and blaming others who just don't make enough money to do the best thing for their families. How sad that in the greatest country on earth we fail to protect the majority of our citizens from a broken healthcare system controlled by insurance companies. I don't have any advice for fertility problems except I would try Planned Parenthood to start. Also maybe a little more research on the computer. Good luck!

Hi! Has she tried Planned Parenthood or the Communicare Clinics (Yolo County)? If these places don't work, maybe they can give her another suggestion.

Good luck to your friend!

Hi Trish,

what a frustrating situation! I feel for her, I know she is probably yearning for a bably so bad. I've found in my practice that many times it can be affected a lot by diet. there are many natural ways to help change the body chemstry, inorder to indirectly affect hormones. I'd love to talk more to your friend about changes that she can make to increase her fertility naturally. See my listing here on mamasource, under alternative health in Danville.

Hope to speak with you soon,
B.

Does your friend live in California? I know that Ca has great insurance through the government, assuming that you qualify... Even if your friend's family makes a little to much money to qualify for the free health insurance they offer other health insurance programs for extremely cheap. (All states have their own programs, so if she is some where else she will just have to research it). Before your friend can get pregnant, she needs to figure out why she is not having her period, as this could be a sign of another problem. Have her check it out the this website, http://www.sfhp.org/. It lists all of the programs available, how you qualify and how to go about getting it. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions. I did not have insurance at the time I was pregnant with my son, and I used Medi-Cal. I had an amazing experience with it, and would recommend it to any mom's out there that do not have insurance. Good luck!

You can find some really decent health coverage at https://www.ehealthinsurance.com. We've used them for shor-term and long term insurance and were very happy with the options and support.

Good Luck!
