No Growth Measured at 24 Week Check-up

O.K. so has this happened to you?
I went for my 24 week check up yesterday and my belly isn't measuring any bigger and I've only gained 1 pound. I saw a new midwife 'cuz mine was out sick. The heartbeat is good and I can feel a lot of movement. I was up all night crying trying to think of what could be wrong. I miscarried 3 times last year before this pregnancy so I waited til 15 weeks to tell family or let myself bond. I'm head over heels for the little girl in my belly and want her to be o.k. I have an emergency ultrasound tomorrow at 2pm.
My son was a preemie, I'm carrying really low and just turned 40. I'm trying to be calm and rational but between the hormones and my history I am pretty much in full-throttle freak out mode.

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded! I had my ultrasound on Friday and after several calls and e-mails and having to yell and cuss to get an answer I was told the baby is measuring about 2 weeks small and just on the border of "normal". My tests have been sent up the bureaucratic ladder to a specialist who will review them and compose a diagnosis in about 2 more weeks. Efficient, huh?
I am also a little anemic so I need to beef up my vitamins and eat more broccoli and red meat. I'm hoping that will help the baby grow too.

A. ~ I am so sorry that you are going through this. I think that maybe you need to just relax, and take a deep breath and wait for the ultra sound. I know, easier said than done! I think it is a possiblity that since you had a different midwife, maybe she measures differently than your usual midwife and that could be the difference....I will be praying for you....hopefully it will turn out that they just measure differently, and you get another chance to see your little one on the t.v. - I always love my ultrasounds! I will be praying for the best!
Blessings ~ Janine

Hey this happened with my now 19 year old son and he was perfect!!! Seeing a new provider can really make a difference in what happens at the visit. You are most likely OK and carrying your daughter in a different manner than MOST mothers. Please RELAX!!!! Stress only causes the blood flow to the placenta to decrease also...

Say some prayers or whatever your beliefs are and believe it will be OK!!

It has been my experience that if you think about something enough, it will happen. So I encourage you to think good thoughts about your baby. FEEL how good it is to hold her, talk to her, play with her. FEEL with every fiber of your being how much you love watching her sleep, eat, play, etc. Find a thought that fills you with that good feeling. Anytime you feel your self slipping into a not so nice place, just think that happy thought. Think of it like a lightswitch and flip it! Talk to her, tell her how much you love her. Know that she feels your pain, and your stress, and your LOVE. My good thoughts and prayers are with you both.

Please don't worry. this also happened to me. It was horrible because the doctor seeing me freaked out right in front of me. Each doctor who measures will usually get a little different measurement. When I went back the next day and saw my regular OB he found my uterus had grown. All that worry for nothing. I had horrible time getting pregnant so I understand completely. Worry never helped. It only stresses you out.

A strong heartbeat is an excellent sign! Not all women gain a lot of weight. Even if you do have a preemie the technology they have is amazing. I had my son 6 wks early and in the eyes of the NICU that's nothing.

Have some chammomile tea and look forward to your ultrasound! Call the midwife if you are really stressed and ask her medical opinion.

Best wishes,
-C.

I am really sorry to hear that you are having to go through all of this and I understand exactly what you are going through. My last pregnancy was IUGR and my DD was delivered at 28 weeks because of lack of growth. Today she is 6 years old and doing wondefully. I know it is hard not to stress, but think positive thoughts until you receive your U/S. Belly measurements and maternal weight gain are not always an exact science. The U/S will give you a more definitive answer. Sending positive thoughts your way!

I have 2 stories about friends of mine. One friend gained only 16 lbs total for the whole pregnancy, including the baby - perfectly healthy child. Another friend pent the first four months actually LOSING weight, and she wasn't huge beforehand - perfect child.

The comment about different doctors measuring differently makes a ton of sense - also, I would find out how much would be expected to be gained in measurement? Maybe it's a tiny amount to begin with, so the room for error or differences in technique would account for it. Go see your own person again and don't worry!!!

Dear A.,
I know this is a scary time for you given your history. But let me say that as long as the heart beat is strong and you are feeling movement, belly size isn't always indicative. I was 6 months pregnant with my daughter, and you couldn't even tell if I had a loose shirt on. I gained 30 pounds all together, but most of it in the last 3 months. She was born perfectly healthy. My sister only gained 9 pounds when she was pregnant with my nephew which I was horrified about and frankly not very happy with her because it just didn't seem right. She had a hard time keeping any food down the entire time. I thought she should have insisted her doctor be more worried...
My nephew is 17, 6'3" and perfectly healthy. He was born full term, almost 7 pounds. Go figure.

The main thing is for you to relax...worrying and stressing won't help. Wait for your ultrasound tomorrow and let us know how it goes, okay?

Prayers and best of wishes to you!
