Newborn Hair Loss

My son is 4 weeks old, and he has started to lose hair on top of his head. I have read that it is normal for babies to lose hair on the back and sides of their heads, because that is the part that is rubbed the most from being on their backs often. He looks like he is balding on top, but he still has a lot of hair on the sides and back of his head. Should I be concerned about this, or is it normal?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your responses. His hair is so long in the back, and he is bald in the very front, it is too funny.

My son lost all the hair on the top of his head when he was 6 weeks old. But the hair on the sides and back stayed. He looked like a little old bald man!! It came back, slowly, but it came back. And now, at 15 months, his bangs have to be trimmed about once a month. Don't worry-it's normal!

My son's hair did the same thing when he was a newborn. He kinda looked like a little old man! Then when it grew back it was like a mullet!(very cute though!). He now has very nice, thick hair all over his head.

Normal. Mine lost all of his baby hair and then grew in some really nice soft curls. We cut that and then he grew some nice coarse curls. I have heard that until they are like 5 or so you can't really know for sure what their hair is going to do. Mine is only two, so we will see I guess! Congratulations on your new little one:)

Totally Normal: Don't sweat it. Our kids looked like little, old, bald men for about 2 months. We still call our 3-month old 'grampa' sometimes. They look a little less cute, and a lot more goofy for awhile, but it will pass.

You should start seeing new hair growth on the bald parts soon - and this hair won't rub off (I promise!).

I have 4 children and 1 on the way. Do not be alarmed. All of my children lost the hair on the top of their heads. My sons did more than the girls. It looked kinda funny, since my baby boys had hair like a balding man.

LOL! When my daughter's hair started growing back in, it was much longer on the back and sides, practically bald on top.
We referred to it as her "Ed Asner 'do." :-D

Don't stress over it. My daughter now has long, gorgeous curly hair, and gets compliments all the time. When I see other babies, now, I'm still partial to the "bald ones."

Best wishes,
M.

I have 3mo old b/g twins and at about 4 weeks the girl lost all the hair on top of her head (she looked like an old man). It started coming back within about 2 wks and is now much thicker than it was originally. The boy still has about the same amount he was born with, no loss, no gain.

I guess all kids are different, but my kids were born with ALOT of dark hair that stuck out all over and this all fell out and then they were bald and then they grew back blonde hair. So whatever your baby is doing I think is normal.
Enjoy the ride.

I had the same problem with all of my children but mostly my son. For my son it was because his head was growing faster than his hair could keep up. He still had the hair it was just spreading out over his scalp as his head grew.

Both my babies had the same hair loss pattern that you are describing. They looked like little old men!! They both have lovely hair now - ages 11 and 9! I don't think you have anything to worry about :)

Sounds normal to me. My daughter is losing hair all over and was born with a full head of hair! Remember some of the hair on top could be coming out from when you bathe him.

This is not something to worry about, just like your finger prints are different from mine, all babies are different. Some are born bald, some look like they have rugs on their heads, some loose their hair in different places. God did not make us all alike like cookies. Be happy that you have a baby, love it and be happy.

Don't be concerned---totally normal! My daughter was born with a full head of dark brown hair. Within a few months, it had all gone away and her new blonde hair matched her dad's and mine!

No worries! This is perfectly normal! My daughter did the exact same thing around 2 1/2 months old. We joked that she had my husband's dad's receeding hairline since she was only loosing on top! She now is 4 months old and the hair is sprouting in evenly and beautifully- even thicker than before! Your son is lucky to have a mom like you that cares about even the little things- sounds like you're doing great!

Hi J.
Very normal and don't be surprised if your little one stays "bald" for several months. It happens to all babies...... it is a good opportunity to be sure he does not get craddle cap as the new hair starts to grow in. And dont be surprised if it comes in a different color than the hair he was born with.
good luck and blessings
