Newborn Cold?

Hi all,

My husband brought home a cold, and now we think our 5 week old has it. She is coughing and sounds congested but doesn't have a fever. I already have an appointment scheduled with a pediatrician for Monday, but I'm wondering if I should give her anything or just continue to watch her closely until Monday.

Any of your expertise is greatly appreciated to this new mom and over-protective-feeling-guilty-new-dad. :) D.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the tips. I've got a humidifier going, and she's propped up in her boppy. She started sneezing stuff up tonight, so I think she's breaking up the congestion on her own.

I would have gone to the doctor tomorrow, but there was a week lapse in her insurance, so it goes into effect on 3/1 which is why we have the original appointment. The nurse line won't give any advice until they've seen her at least once (probably for legal purposes).

I will keep an eye on her and keep you all updated. Thanks again!

There is NOT anything you can give a newborn. You can put a COOL mmist humidifier in the room that the baby is sleeping in and this will help.

NO VICKS VAP O RUB!!!! It is not recommended until they are at least 4 months!!!! Use a vaporizer, such as the Vicks vaporizer unit. If your baby has a fever, then you should not wait until Monday. Sometimes, it is the humidity in your home too. Make sure you have visitors, including you & your husband wash their hands before handling your little one. First six months are the most important for your baby not to get sick.

A humidifier (cool mist), snot sucker, and lots of cuddles should be sufficient. :) No meds.

she is wayyyy to young for any meds. Watch her closely. Newborns and colds can get bad very quickly. Watch for RSV signs. You might want to move her appointment up a few days.

Your baby is too young for over the counter meds so you should stay clear of those. Just keep a close eye until your appt, but if she seems to get worse or she has trouble breathing, you should take her to an urgent care over the wknd. Possibly even call your ped this morning and see if you can get fit in today.

Good advice given so far. I have a 4 week old and he has a cold too :( big sister brought it home from school! Anyways, what we have found works is Saline drops in the nose and then using the aspirator to remove the icky snot. Also, we have a vicks vaporizer running at night while he sleeps and we bought the vicks additive for it to help clear out his sinuses. Try to keep her upright as much as possible.
Our son is also on Albuterol treatments 3x a day until his cough clears.

When you have a little one less than a year old there's really not anything you can do for minor cold symptoms (sniffle, cough). For nasal congestion involving mucus in the nasal cavity use saline drops/spray to moisturize and loosen the mucus and a nasal aspirator to suck it out as well as using a humidifier. Coughing is a baby's way of clearing their throat just like sneezing helps them to clear their nasal passages. It helps to remember that not all sniffles equal a cold virus. She'll probably be ok as long as she doesn't spike a fever.

definitely call your pediatrician and see if you can reshedule sooner. if they have a nightline, and she sounds a little congested, give them a call. a nurse will call u back and probably ask you to put the phone up to baby's mouth so she can hear the breathing. if the baby develops a fever over 100.4 take her to the emergency room. RSV is serious, and dont feel bad about taking every precaution for your wonderful new addition. no meds, she is too young, but a humidifier is good, run the air purifier if you can.

The only thing I would do is put Vicks vapor rub on the chest and between the shoulderblades on the back. run a vapor mist in the room. If she is congested cut down on milk, will make it worse, thicker, melt peppermint candy in water. keep her hydrated. Good luck and may God bless and keep you all.

Hi D.!

I know as a new Mom that some things that may occur with your daughter may be a little scary at times, but you and your husband will make it through. I am the mother of 6 and have been through things like this many times. Unfortunately there's really nothing they can do for her, unless they find out that she has some kind of bacterial infection in which they will prescribe an antibiotic.

I have done some things for my children in the past and also for our 17 month old that helps her feel a little better is to use a humidifier in her room, used saline nose drops (to help loosen the mucus in her nose), a nasal aspirator (to remove the mucus from her nose), and of course some good old-fashioned TLC from Mommy and Daddy.

I pray that your little one gets better soon!

A cool-mist humidifier is really a god-send with a child, so I would suggest getting one now (and actually if I have a cold it helps me a lot too). The other thing I would suggest is getting an appointment for tomorrow. If your peds office cannot get you tomorrow, I would suggest looking for a new one. You want to know that no matter when you call that your sick child can be seen ASAP! Good luck...sick babies are no fun!

Yes, I'd get her in right away because of her age and the fact that RSV is going around this time of year. You can't give her a thing, but use a humidifier in her room (don't close the door) and elevate her crib mattress by putting a pillow or blanket under the mattress so its nowhere near her. If you think she is having trouble breathing, or you hear her wheezing at all, call the dr right away or just take her to the ER. RSV is very dangerous for babies because it restricts the airways and can suffocate them. We were in the hospital last month for my (then) two month old with RSV. The floor was filled with babies with it. Don't worry if you seem paranoid or whatever to the dr. The most important thing is for your daughter to get better!!

Everyone's advice has been good so far, so I'm going to second it, and just add some advice until you can see the doctor. First, NO MEDS. Cold medications can be extremely dangerous for children this young - in fact, these days, they aren't recommended for anyone under 4-years-old.

A cool-mist humidifier is a good idea. The other thing you can do is get some saline (they make infant-sized sprays now), spray it up her nose, and then suction it out with the nasal aspirator. This works a lot better than it sounds like it would.

If you are able to, prop the baby's bed up so that her head is higher than her feet. If she is in a crib, stack a couple of blankets under the head of her mattress. This is not safe to do in most bassinets because the pads are often too thin or flexible, but you might be able to prop it up in its frame.

I wish you the best of luck.

hello,
meds are a def no go for a new born and btw congrats on ur bundle of joy. i would call the docs office back and let them know this is a 5 wk old baby who has gotten sick and she needs to be seen immediately. it could be nothing but RSV is a big thing that can occur the fact that u mentioned she's congested that alone at 5 wks alerts me, she is simply to young of a life to be congested. get her in try the humidifier and a close eye good luck

The best thing to do is to keep her nose suctioned out. There is no need for any medication; just put a humidifier in her bedroom. The way to treat a cold is to treat the symptoms. However, a cold in children can turn into ear infections, so if she becomes super fussy (especially when you lay her down) and/or runs fever she needs to go to the doctor for an antibiotic. Good luck! PS I read the other answers; do NOT cut down on her milk, as this is a baby's only nutrition. And NEVER melt peppermint candy in water and feed that to her. Giving a baby water throws their electrolytes out of balance. And do NOT put Vick's vapo rub on her at all! Some people don't have the best advice!
