It seems that after my son gets even the mildest cold he complains of ear pain then we head to the doctor for 10 days of antibiiotics. Can i prevent a cold to getting to this point? Thanks,

What can I do next?

My son suffered an ear infection after every cold because the fluid couldn't drain properly. He had tubes put in when he was three and hasn't had an ear infection in five years.

We figured out that, as soon as my youngest starts sniffling, we give him an antihistamine. Claritin or Allegra work great. If it's bad enough to stuff him up, we head to the doctor and get a script for an antihistamine with decongestant for kiddoes.

He used to have one ear infection after the other....and all that stopped when we realized that it was allergy season that caused them.

As for preventing colds: Vitamin D3 and Vitamin C.

Best of luck!

My son was the same way till we got tubes put in. The tubes have fallen out 8 years ago now and I think he has only had one or two since. My daughter started with the same issue this past year put instead of heading to tubes she must take an allergy medicine every day. I try to hold off on it while the weathers cold but the minute she does she gets stuffy so back to it. She is on Singulair and it has held off her infections since October.

Yes, you can prevent it by eliminating dairy and sugar from his diet. He won't have these problems anymore

My daughter had this issue too. After seeing an ENT, we discovered it was her adenoids. They never truly cleared up from the infection (even after 2 courses of strong antibiotic) and so the slightest bit of new sniffles and congestion would cause another infection in just days! She had her adenoids out and tubes in - it has helped a lot even though we have now discovered she has allergies. When she gets really stuffy we use the saline nose drops to loosen stuff and then give a good blow to get it all out before we use her allergy nose spray (nasonex) - it works wonders!

My niece was this way. When she was born the pedi took one look at her ears and said that every time she got a stuffy nose, she would also get a ear infection. He was right and for 2 years they fought one infection after another until she had tubes put in. She hasn't had an ear infection since.

My son is the same way. The pediatrician had suggested continuously blowing his nose- REALLY getting all of the boogies out. I guess it's the build-up in the sinus cavities that "leaks" into the ears. Gross, but it makes sense.

Allergy meds can help but it's no gaurentee. If you do use them, start at the mildest symptoms, if not continuously. One of my sons did best with a pseudophed, which is a decongestant but you have to ask for it from behind the pharmacy counter.
