my name is J. and I live in Deep Creek (Chesapeake,Va) so we probably live only minutes away from one another. CHKD is awesome! Until last night I never had to admit my girls or go to the ER but had taken my daughter there for a doctor app (hearing check). LAst night my daughter ahd the 12 hr flu bug that is going around here. She ahs never been throw up sick before really, other than throwing up one time and that was it. She threw up off and on from 4pm until we wnt to CHKD. We went becasue I talked to the doctor on call in her office and told them that she wasn't keeping anything down-even a teaspoon of pedialite. They told me to go for fluids. I was scared to deaht but we left at 10:45, just me and NAtlaie (my husband stayed home wiht my 1 year old). It wasn't busy and we were in an ER room within 30 minutes upon arrival. We had a tv in our room and NAltie got to name a movie she wanted to watch and they put it on. She was dehydrated and still vomitting so they gave her an anti-nausea pill, waited 20 minutes and gave her juice and pedialite mixed. That pill was awesome-they did not have to give her an IV. They were very thourough I thought in asking questions, talking to NAtlaie, making her feel as good as possible under the circumstances. They even let her keep the sippy cup her juice was in. She calls it her "special cup" and she even wanted to bring her hospital nightgown home so they let her (of course it ahs been washed/etc by now). Anyway, 3 hours in the ER made an amazing difference! She still is not eating much, but she is drinking and feeling better. I was very pleased wiht our ER experience and how they catered to my daughter. I am sure that they are very familiar with adjusting to changes and new places since they see so many children. After last night I feel confident telling you that I really believe they will be wonderful wiht your son. (A side note: they are so well known in our area and most people have them on thier "on call" list. The doctor on call told me to go to CHKD becasue, although a little further away for me then Chesapeake General, the doctor told me that CHKD was the only hospital they could guarentee would have space available to admit my daughter to a room at any given time or on any given day if that was needed. Also, my daughter had Nemo thorax when she was born and had to ahve a little procedure done in the chest cavity. Her pediatrician had CHKD on call during the procedure so that if they were needed they could get her and take her right away. They were not needed but while it was scary they ahd to have them on call it was comforting to know they were there.)
I hope I have helped and that I have not been to long winded. If you want to get in touch wiht me about anything-the area, a playdate, etc please feel free to E-mail me: ____@____.com put that you are from mamasource in the subject so I won't delete it.
Thanks, have agreat day.
J.
