New Graduate (And New Mom) Seeking Nursing Position in Maternal/newborn Area

Hi, E.,

I am mom of 2 kids and want to pursue nursing course. I am at a loss as to how to begin. I needed some info. re the nursing courses available, the duration, the good colleges, the credits required etc....basically all start-up info. I am in a predicament..whether to go to college after 2 kids and whether I will be able to do justice to the course.

Have you tried Las Colinas Hospital in Irving. They might have oppurtunities..the in the area you are looking at.

I just started working at Presby Plano as a resp therapist. I don't know about them having the internships in the area that you want, but I do know that they have a huge NICU and L/D area. And it is only growing! There is a leading fertility program there so lots of mommies having babies! Just something to think about. You could call their HR dept or go online at jobsthr.com! GOOD LUCK! I am suprised TWU doesn't have any connections with any hospitals for you to do intern in L/D. I know that I was in orientation with a new grad from El Centro and she was starting their internship in POST PARTUM. SO give them a call!

My mother-in-law was just hired part-time in the nursery at Centennial Hospital off of 121/Coit. I know she would check all the hospitals' openings on their webpages, if you haven't done that yet?

I graduated from nursing school in 1992 and have been a labor and delivery nurse for most of that time. I am not sure how it is in Texas because we just moved here, however, in Louisiana and Florida there are not many hospitals that allow new graduates to work directly in L & D out of school. I was lucky because I did an internship at a state hospital in L & D while in school so they took a chance on me. Most seem to want either med surg experience or post partum experience. The reason is L & D is considered a high risk area and they usually require experience. I would think your best bet would be to either start in post partum which would help you anyways in L & D or check out the state hospitals.
