I am hosting a seminar in two weeks in Carrollton titled "What your doctor SHOULD tell you about birth control and breast cancer." I am needing testimonies, either in person at the seminar or responses to this request, for NFP and charting sympto-thermal methods. If you have had a negative experience with birth control like I have, such as cancer, blood clots, endometriosis, weight gain, etc, I could use your feedback, too.

I am a cancer survivor and my ob/gyn is an NFP only practioner. The seminar will discuss NFP and natural progesterone along with cancer prevention and little known cancer risks. You can remain annonymous if you wish.

Any and all feedback is welcome. Positive or negative!
Thanks!

So What Happened?

Wow- my seminar was awesome! The information presented was informative, the speakers witty - it was so great to see that others are looking for answers, too. We all learned from each other and had a great time! For those that could not make it, we are scheduling another one in approx. 6 weeks - email me if you would like details or would like Dr. Behan to speak at your church/office/event.
Thanks SO MUCH for your personal stories - it was great to be able to read some been-there-done-that's as proof.

Hi L.!
It is great that you do seminar teaching woman how to live life away from chemical substances that are pushed on us. I don't like to use birth control pills. My body couldn't tolerate them.
I like to mention Hormone Replacement Therapy(HRT) doctor give us so easy. I think that most of us women don't know that "Premarin" or "Prempro" are hormones made from pregnant horse urine!!!!!!
They can be used for horses not for woman.
Good luck with your seminar-W.

I am a breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at 35yrs old and there is no history in my family. I was on birth control pills for 15 yrs. I do have 3 children so I was off them for some time for that reason. My test results I received from my oncologist was that mine was not produced by estrogen so the pill did not cause mine. I did have the blood test to see if I carried the gene and luckily I do not. The way my cancer was detected was that I woke up one morning with a terrible breast infection(had not nursed in 3yrs)it was leaking blood and a clear/white liquid and was 4 times larger than it should be. My regular doctor put me on antibiotics immediately and got me scheduled with a breast surgeon. Long story short it took 3 months to detect and it was from a biopsy. No other tests showed any cancer. They tried putting me on several different antibiotics and it would improve but always came back. My cancer was in the milk ducts so I had to have a mastectomy. I'm not sure if my story will help you. Good Luck with your seminar and congrats on your own defeat!!!

I use NFP because I'm also Catholic, but I do love the fact that I don't have to remember to take medicine on a regular basis, worry about side effects, and budget for the cost of the birth control. While NFP isn't always free, it can be done for a small amount of money if you decide to go with a certain program. Breastfeeding, menstruating, and NFP can be quite a challenging combination. In my situation though, it has been a great motivation and opportunity for my husband and I to work on communicating clearly with each other and finding non-sexual ways to be close to each other. It is also nice to be able to look at your chart, notice your patterns and be able to anticipate and plan for things like PMS or notice when something is different and be able to look into it right away.

I would love to have the name of your OB. We are Catholic and have been practicing NFP for 9 years and it is sooooo hard to find an OB who supports our decision. I had a stroke 13 years ago at the age of 20 and so birth control wasn't ever an option because of the risk of stroke. Thanks for any information.

Hi L.,
My name is S. and I am using a natural Nutritional Shake especially designed for women to help regulate their hormones naturaly. I used to take bith control but stopped at age of 38. I have Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and my symptoms flare up a week before my period and during my period. This shake helps me with PMS and regulates my progesterone, estrogen and testosterone, etc.
As women, our bodies have special nutritional needs, needs that aren't always met through our regular diet.
Recent research has shown that nature provides a bounty of effective nutrients that can help women lead longer, healthier lives.
I will be more than glad to bring this natural product to introduce to women. My phone number is ###-###-####.

Hi L.,

My husband and I have been using NFP for 8 years. There are pros and cons, but due to religious and personal beliefs, I wouldn't do it any other way.

The most challenging part has to do with communication and getting a couple to be on the same page and both on board with the process. Once working together, I belive marriages are stronger for it.

I found that getting to know my cycles and body helped keep me in better health. When my fertility patterns were off, I would research it, and could usually link it to a vitamin deficiency or other health-related issue. I found a great book called "Fertility, Cycles and Nutrition" by Marilyn Shannon which showed links between diet, menstruation and fertility. It's a great resource. Also, there is software that comes with a book called the "Fertility Awareness Method" that is helpful in creating and maintaining charts.

I've had difficulty with charting and finding patterns while nursing. Using a charting method that requires taking your tempurature can also be challenging with young children not sleeping through the night. During these periods, I've had to rely most on other fertility symptoms or the use of a fertility monitor (Persona) once my period returned.

I am very glad to hear of information getting out there as to the negative impacts of birth control. As women, in general, we do not know our bodies and are too trusting that what a dr. prescribes is okay for us when there can be so many negative impacts we are never even aware of.

I'm not sure if this is the line of answer you were looking for, but if you have more specific questions, feel free to send me a message.

Good luck!

My husband and I have been using NFP since we were married almost 6 years ago. I LOVE being able to know what my body is doing and cross check with the temperature sign. In fact, I'm currently in month 12 of lactational amenhorrea, and the temperature sign is the one thing I can count on to know that I am still in amenhorrea and not pregnant. As long as it stays low, I know that I have not ovulated and don't have to waste money on pregnancy tests.

Being so in tune with my body has been great. Each time I have been pregnant I have known the exact date of conception, even when my midwife thought I was 6 weeks further along, I was able to confirm conception through my charting.

Discussing our mutual fertility and whether we feel called to try for another baby or called to postpone has been extremely good for our marriage. My husband wakes me up and gives me the thermometer each morning, and records the temperature every evening when I record my mucus observations. I feel so supported and united with him, not like fertility is "my problem" and that it's all on me. I feel like he accepts all of me and treasures me as a gift, including my fertility.

If you want any more info please dont' hesitate to contact me!

I'm not sure this is what you are looking for , but I quit taking birth control pills about a year ago because I suffer tremendously with PMS emotional symptoms each month and have found BC pills make the symptoms even worse for me. I still have to use a low dose medication to help control the irritation and anxiety I have a few days a month, but have been able to cut the number of pills I take a month in half after stopping the BC pills. I'm very regular and have found it easy to tell when I ovulate on my own since getting pregnant twice. I use a calendar to track everything each month. I hope this helps.
