Hi, I recently started a second, late night, job so I honestly could not do the dishes for several days...I know I know, gross right? We have to wash by hand as the apt has no automatic dishwasher. I THOUGHT my dear hubby would get them done but alas...he doesn't seem to think it was his job to do the dishes so whenever I'd come in, it'd be real late & after midnight before I'd get to bed since I had to shower, etc. & the dishes would still be in the sink, I'd say something to him about it but he just blew it off apparently. Well, I FINALLY got to them today...a cooking pot full of bowls, dinnerware, etc was immersed in that filthy water for days & now they STINK SOOOO badly! They smell like someone's really bad breath! NASTY smell. I scrubbed & soaked in fresh water & they still stink! Is there ANYthing I can do to get rid of the odor? Would baking soda & vinegar help? I don't really want to use bleach water since it's cooking stuff. Any advice??? Thanks, in advance, to anyone who replies. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Hmmm I didn't think to add vinegar and let it soak..thanks!! I'll try that!! If that don't work, I'll try the capful of bleach. :) Keep the help coming though, thanks!

It's fine to use bleach.
Since Hubby finds washing dishes to be beneath him, do yourself a favor and pack them away.
Use paper plates instead.
Then washing dishes will only mean cleaning up the pots and pans and utensils but the paper dishes you just toss out.

A cap full of bleach to a sink full of water will sanitize the dishes and will not be harmful to eat off of. That is how dishes are sanitized in restaurants and other food preparation facilities.

I had a plastic bowl that was really stinky. I filled it with hot water, dishwashing soap and some vinegar and let it soak overnight. It got rid of the smell!

When I worked in restaurants, dishes, pots, pans, everything would go through a bleach dip while they were washed. Then the bleach was rinsed off. This was per health dept codes. I don't normally clean with bleach, but in your case I would consider it.

What stinks is that your dh won't do the dishes.

However, I confess to leaving dirty dishes soaking in the sink for several days during the week when I'm working and busy in the evenings with activities. And I have a dishwasher! What I do is squirt dish soap into a big pot or the big bowls and everything gets thrown in there. Then as we use the sink to wash our hands and smaller items, or rinse out the sponge, the pot fills with soapy water and everything inside soaks in soap water for a few days and is easy to clean when I get to them.

Scrub it out and then try those pearls that go in the sink or run the disposal (if you have one) with orange peels in it.

Try using vinegar in the dish water.

You can also get a Citrus Magic disk for overall odors. THey sell them at the grocery store.

Actually, make him do all those things.

I would make your Husband, problem solve that problem. Himself.
And as "B" said below, get paper plates.
