Need Serious Advice on Vaccinations for My 12 Month Old

I have not vaccinated my 16 mo old, he has never had a cold, never been on antibiotics, I strongly feel I am not going to do it. TO each her own but I would do some research.

Jenny has done a lot of research and probably has all the most up-to-date information on this subject, since it's so close to her heart. I saw her on a show last night. She doesn't think kids should NOT be vaccinated, she just thinks they should be done on a different schedule.

I have a 1-year-old son who has not been vaccinated and he is extremely healthy. We do not plan on vaccinating because of the research we have done and all of the evidence we have found stacked against vaccines.

I am basically responding to reply to someone's post that said, "Also if your son plans on going to preschool or school,vaccinations are required."

This is NOT true. There are exemptions for almost every state. There are medical, religious and philosophical exemptions. Here in Nevada we have medical and religious exemptions and you do NOT need to be a part of any church to use the religious exemption. There are aborted fetal cells in some of the vaccinations and that alone is against many religions.

This is what will be given to your child through the MMR shot:
Hydrolized gelatin, chick embryonic fluid, and human diploid cells from aborted fetal tissue

and this is what is in the Varicella vaccine (there are two separate ones listed):
1. Human albumin, human diploid cells, residual components of MRC-5 cells including DNA and proteins, bovine serum, hydrolized gelatin, and chicken embryo.

2.Processed gelatin, fetal bovine serum, guinea pig embryo cells, albumin from human blood, and human diploid cells from aborted fetal tissue

This is definitely your decision to make as a mother because you know what is best for your child. I would recommend researching to the best of your ability and if you need anymore information I have A TON of sources.
And if you do decide to hold off on vaccinating, or skip it all together, your doctor will probably try to scare you into vaccinating, but you have to trust in your instincts and the research you have found out. Don't give into their pressure, they are in it for the money, not for your child's well-being.

Just wanted you to know that not everyone vaccinates. Continue to educate yourself and weigh the risks. There ARE risks, that's why we have to sign those releases.

Those who make the decisions for "public health" may think 1 in 10,000 or even 1 in 1,000,000 deaths is a price worth paying but I bet the mother of that 1 isn't comforted that her child died for the cause of "public health".

Hey -- I have, hands down, the healthiest kid I know -- he is 5 and has never been vaccinated. I did breastfeed till he was 4.2 years old (actually read that this is the worldwide average for weaning!)which I am sure helped, but there is just no comparison with any other vaccinated kids I know.If you want to do vaccinations that are contraversial, you can always 1)wait till your child is developmentally past the potentially affected milestones and then do it 2)go to a naturopath for single dose vaccines -- which don't have the offending preservatives that multiple dose vials require 3)wait till your child is school age and more likely to be exposed to any/everything 4)skip the vaccines until you have more resolve and/or information that makes you feel more comfortable. OK... I'm going to be the devils advocate on this one. I AM VERY ANTI-Vaccination. I have done my research, much like the other ladies are telling you to do. I think that is the most beneficial thing you can do. Although they "believe" that there is no link to vaccinations and autism, do we know for sure what DOES cause it? We don't have a clue. I have a speculation that it resides somewhere in our genes and that it could be caused through repetitive exposure. Why are we seeing more and more cases of it? Why are there children who are FINE until AFTER they are vaccinated? I worked for a doctor who was against vaccinations and she ended up treating two babies for serious life-threatening complications due to vaccinations. 2 in, get this, 8 months. That's right.. I only worked there for 8 months and I witnessed the effects that those children went through. Most vaccinations are created only AFTER the conditions have started to die out. Also, they are wrapped in mercury and formaldehyde. The mercury levels are 30x what an adult should consume in a day. Doctors will tell you that they no longer use mercury, but they simply call it by another name now. Formaldehyde is a KNOWN carcinogenic... CANCER! Have you ever wondered why all of a sudden we are seeing more and more child cancer cases?

My fiance is retired Navy and knows what the vaccines feel like coursing through his ADULT body and full heartedly supports my decision to not vaccinate.
The MMR vaccine is THE MOST DANGEROUS of all and I have already met one woman on this site who had her son vaccinated with several vaccines and he went in to a coma! He almost died! There have been children who have died from them.
MOST of the conditions that we are attempting to protect our children from can either be treated with antibiotics, can work their own way out of the system, or are found only in 3rd world countries.
And the real kicker... NONE of these vaccines have ever had a longitudinal study (long term). The longest study before injection into population and added on the mandated list... 25 DAYS! In addition to that, NO tests have EVER been done on vaccines when they are used in combination like the MMR or the DPT.
Keep in mind you do NOT have to vaccinate. You WILL encounter people who will condemn you and think you're NUTS and a bad parent, but it is your choice. The list is only mandated, not mandatory. BIG difference in the wording.

Very simple. "Just say no." There is no need to stress or freak out. No need to discuss it with your pediatrician. Be firm and decisive, and just explain that you are waiting until your son is older to vaccinate. Period. End of story. Why play Russian Roulette with your sweet little boy's life? Wait until he is 3+ to vaccinate and for goodness sake, do not back down. You are MOM! You call the shots - or in this case, you call OFF the shots. :0)

Please don't vaccinate your child...Look up the ingredients on the internet and let that be the deciding factor. Vaccinations are just a small dosage of the disease plus other harmful chemicals so your child can build an immunity to them. The chemicals make your child sick and weekens their immune system, so they become a more sickly child. A lot of the diseases that have vaccinations aren't even deadly, and don't cause serious damage. The drug indusrty does it for their benefit, not your child's.

Vaccinations are like playing russian-roulette in many ways. Most kids come out of it ok (as far as we know), but some don't. The dangers aren't only with thimerosal (mercury additive). If you do decide to vaccinate, PLEASE have the shots given ONE at a time, spread out over weeks or even months. They will most likely try to talk you into doing them all at once because it is standard procedure. Stand strong. Your the mom. If you spread it out over a long period of time, his body will have time to process each one rather than an overdose in one day.

Dear K., my son is 21 months and is an extremely healthy active individual. I too love my son soooo much! I know you are concerned about vaccinations as are many parents. Keep doing your research and talk to your pediatrition about vaccinating. I know there are speculations about autism and regressing linked to vaccinations, but truely there really is no proof. I was a teacher for autistic children for many years and feel that maybe we've had autisum all along and now they just have a name for what they called down syndrome or slow development in the past, but this is just me speculating also. My son has had all of his vaccines and his is doing great. Also if your son plans on going to preschool or school,vaccinations are required. Do what you feel is best but my advice is go for it, majority of the kids have them and the percentage of vaccinated kids to autism or regressing is minor. Take Care a very happy mother.

you can hold off on the mmr until he is older. A lot of moms are doing that in my area waiting until 18mths or 2yrs. Talk to your doctor, I think that is a 3 in 1 shot, some doctors are giving them seperate. I've done a lot of research and there is no consistant research on autism. I know they have taken the mercury out of that shot. Mercury is still in the flu shot, so you need to ask for a mercury free or the have a nasal spray that doesn't have it in it. The best thing I can say is talk to your doctor, hold off the shot until he's older and your more comfortable.

I feel for you and all parents with babies. My children are 17 and 27 and back then all this info was not available so they had all their shots. Everything turned out okay with both of them, thanks to God, but so many children are now getting autism after these rounds of shots, it's very disturbing. I have a nephew that was totally normal until he received those last round of shots and then was later diagnosed with autism. He is now 7 years old.

talk to your pediatrician about the shots they give, how they are batched and if they are preservative free-- i think one of the issues has been what is used in the preservatives- and if it is preservative free that makes me feel better anyway! i'm a mom of a 5 1/2 year old and a 18month old. i have always vaccinated, but when my insurance changed and the new dr. office was using vaccines with preservatives i decided to pay out of pocket and take them back to our other md for their shots!! piece of mind is worth the money to me!

There is a great book that i read called "What Your Doctor May NOT Tell You About Children's Vaccinations". borders usually has it or you can order it from them for the same price. its really informative and really easy to read (she simplifies all the medical jargon). At the end of the book the author has a suggested schedule/plan to help you figure out which shots to have given in single doses, in what order, and which ones to skip all together. Basically, he author is not anti-vaccinations, she just believes in doing it later when the child is older and in seperate doses.
I have a 2 year old and i read this book right around when he was 12 months or so. since then i had delayed most of his vaccinations while i figured things out. there is nothing wrong with putting off his shots for a while. you can still go to his scheduled appt just decline the shot for now. Beware, most docs throw a hissy fit when you skip shots and they tend to be very skeptical about the autism/vaccination debate. Dont let them bully you into it if you want to wait a while and figure it out----its YOUR kid.

I have a beautiful 9-year-old boy with Autism. He received his Varicella and MMr shots at 13 months. I would seriously advise you to try and delay the shots. Many doctors advise waiting until the child is 2 years old. Also, make sure they have no Thimerisol or aluminum. And try to do the single dose shots, spaced out. You know, the Measles, then the Mumps, then the Ruebella, all seperate. Make sure the shots are not from a multi-dose vial. Make sure the child is well at the time. Do not give Acetaminaphen as it dulls the immune response. Good luck!

My mother teaches children with autism so I did a lot of research when my daughter came to this immunization "milestone." I did decide to have our girl vaccinated with the MMR and varicella (but I think they were at different visits). She had no adverse effects.
Just wanted to chime in with a positive story, but if you're having second thoughts wait until you know what you want to do for sure.

I strongly encourage you to discuss this with your Pediatrician. There are many theories out there regarding the link between autism and vaccinations. The bottom line is that you need to determine what is best for you and your son.

My husband and I were concerned as well, but after discussing this with our Pediatrician we decided to space some of the vaccines out and never to give them when our son was under the weather. He is 20 months old and doing just fine.

I believe the fear was due to the mercury level in the preparation for the vaccination. Check with your doctor and ask if there have been changes to the preparation, and explain your fears to him. That should ease your mind.

DON'T DO IT!!!! After my son had his MMR his leg swelled and he had a black and blue bump it was hot and ugly. I wanted to just suck it right out of him!!! Hi K.! I know that the news has been viewing this information about autism and everything but I feel that there is really no risk. I feel safe about it. I don't know of any children personally that have had any problems getting immunized. I have 3 children and no problems. I think that the media tries to make things more than it really is. Plus, they had taken out the ingredient in the MMR vaccine that they thought might be related. Anyway, immunizations are required for children enterting school. Those children who are not immunized due to religion or whatever else puts our children at a higher risk of contracting something, like that measles outbreak here in San Diego recently. I look at this way, I can maybe give them Autism a slim chance. That is treatable and children can grow up self suffecent adults or he could get whooping cough or Measles and die. You can't die from autism. With early intervention your child can live a happy, well rounded ife.

The answer lies within you, listen to your gut, your mommy instinct. If you are concerned about it, then go with that. The bottom line is, you will find great information on both sides of this issue. I too have been where you are. I have spent hours pouring over websites and articles learning about vaccinations.

There is no reason you should be forced into this. You call the shots here, you are the mommy. PERIOD! Dont let a dr. intimidate you. Tell him/her you want to wait, or not do certain vax, end of discussion. Asking for his/her opinion can help if you have an open minded pediatrician who doesnt have an agenda or a vax vax vax mentality.

As for autism I think we still have a long way to go regarding what causes it. It certainly is scary and vax are looking quite suspicious, but more importantly vax are so loaded with some crazy stuff. That's why I am so uncomfortable with them. I have chosen to modify my kids' vax schedule, including delaying them, not loading them up with several in one visit and skipping some altogether, mainly Hep b, MMR and Chicken Pox--varicella. I wish you well, I know this can be such a stressful decision. Trust yourself, listen to yourself. It is your decision, and your decision is the RIGHT decision.

I just read an article in the LA Times about how scientists have found certain genes that lead to autism. Of course scientific studies come out with millions of different theories all the time. My advice- take every article you read with a grain of salt. You can always find some one who will write alarmist articles and freak people out. But I would be careful about believing many of these articles. I mean, first they thought the mercury in tuna was causing autism, then vaccinations, now genes, what's next?
Get the vaccinations for sure- they do a world of good, the diseases they prevent are really horrible, and your child can't go to school without them. Not even preschool.
But good on you to care enough to ask!

I smiled when I read your entry. My mother has been harping on me since the day my baby girl was born (now 10 months)about vaccinations and Autism. Latly she has been coming to me about these articles she has read about the link between the 1 year shots and autism (specifically the 1 year shot). She is practically begging me to seperate the shots. She says "just to be on the safe side".
I actually agree, what can it hurt to seperate the shots (other then the fact that it hurts the babies...for a second)
I have gone to a friend and mentioned to her about the link and she said "oh I just read an article that said there is no link between the two" Who knows....
All I know, is that what can it hurt dividing the shot?

One of the articles my mother read was about a little girl who recieved her 1 year shots and became distant and non responsive. They didn't know what was wrong with her and did all kinds of tests. They finally found a doctor who linked the reaction to the shots. They gave her something (sorry I can't remember)and it reversed the symptoms. Quite a coincident huh? That's what put my mother over the egde.
So I have my daughters 1 year appointment in May, and I am definatly going to seperate them.
Of course, it is up to you!!!

Hi K., if you have a feeling about it all don't do it. Hold off. Those vaccinations can wait till at least 15 months or two years. Just wait and get them later. Also break them up, get the lot numbers and make sure they contain no thimiserol (some old stock still does). Good luck.

K., You are right to question and research on behalf of your child. I work with kids with autism and have read a lot about the subject...I think concerns are justified to some degree, however, I also grew up knowing people who hade suffered from polio, mumps and measles. I think if you take an educated and thorough approach to your search for answers you will find the right one for you. However, I think that if you flat out just not give your child any shots, you may risk the chances of him receiving other diseases. Many moms aren't as concerned regarding these possibilities, however, these diseases do exist mainly outside of the US and could potentially be a plane ride away. We live in a global community so keep that in mind in your decision process. Even though your child might now not travel to effected areas, others travelling into the US might have.

Here is just a little note from a doctor...according to Georges Peter, MD, director of Rhode Island Hospital's division of pediatric infectious diseases and professor of pediatrics at Brown University School of Medicine. "Childhood immunization and its resulting dramatic impact on serious childhood infections is one of the great success stories of modern medicine," he said. "However, if we don't continue to immunize the 11,000 babies born each day in the United States, diseases like measles, Hib, meningitis, congenital rubella and diphtheria can return-with a vengeance. The benefits of vaccinations far outweigh the risks."

My daughter is 3 1/2 and has autistic traits and goes to special ed school. I personally do not believe the vacination theory. And I say this because we waited on her shots...and she still had the autistic traits..I think everyone is going to have an opinion about this but ask your pediatrian what he/she thinks. I postponed the MMR until my twin boys were 2. My DR wasn't thrilled but she went along with it.

I just suggest spreading out the shots & postpone (not indefinitely) the ones that you feel could be linked to autism.

The initial concern was autism linked to the preservative in the vaccines (thimerasol). The new studies have found that there isn't a link--- but I totally understand your concern & I waited until past the normal age for exhibiting austistic characteristics.

I am pregnant with my 4th child and she was just telling me that it's not the fact that they are giving the shots its that they give them all together. I have decided with this baby that I am going to give the vacs but in my time. I am going to only have 1 given at a time. She told me that they all have some type of presertive in them and the problem is giving many shots all at one time to kids. They think that it just may be too much all at once. It is a preservative that was in the vaccine that had possible links, not the vaccine itself. I can't remember the name of it, sorry. Another fact was the number of shots the children had received in one sitting. Don't allow them do more than 4 shots in one day. It's traumatic to the child and to you. Your child is safer having the vaccination from what all the studies have shown. Also, from what I heard the child who has the most prevelant connection between vaccinations and autism, had a previous condition that the doctors didn't know about and that also reacted badly with the vaccines. I would talk to your ped about any real concerns.

Honestly, I would wait on getting the MMR, or at least split it up into 3 separate shots. I am biased though because my almost 3 year old has autism and I do believe the MMR affected him, though not the sole cause. I am holding out on the MMR for my almost 12 month old daughter for a while--till she is at least 2 but probably later.

I am in a similar situation because I just had my first child, a baby boy, and am dealing with the "vaccine dilemma" myself. The best advice I received was from a girlfriend of mine who has an autistic boy and wished someone had told her to buy a book called "The Vaccine Book" by Robert W Sears. I did end up buying it and it has the most current (written in 2007) information on vaccines. The thing I like about the book is that it was written by a pediatrician and he doesn't say you should or shouldn't vaccine, he gives you all the information so that you can make an educated decision about your child's vaccination schedule. When it comes to vaccines, each parent is their child's advocate which is why we have to be better informed than even our own doctors.

Well, you need to get current information and be fully informed. I was fortunate to find out all about vaccinations and chose not to vaccinate my boys, now 10 and 12. My eldest just got diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, a sort of autism, but not nearly as bad. He is a bit odd, but goes to a normal school and has friends, is highly intelligent, a good skateboarder,etc. I strongly believe that in my son's case, having immunized him would have very possibly sent him into full autism. I was really harassed by many professionals over the years about not immunizing, but I don't argue with them, I just tell them that is our decision. They can't promise you it is safe, so they can't force you to do anything. Just be sure you are keeping them healthy and that is your job. I have lupus, an immune system disorder, so I am even more against messing with their immune systems. Since my son is now in middle school, I did recently get him one shot to protect him from meningitis as I felt it was important and not as risky since he's older. I had a daycare provider that actually applauded my decision to not immunize, as her own son was really mentally damaged by the shots he had as a toddler, permanent brain damage and seizures. That child was about 9 when I saw him and was a real mess, couldn't function right, the whole family revolved around the stress of this child's problematic behavior due to his shots. That is rare, but it happens. I think I heard of another child, also. The thimerasol (I think that's it) in the shots has mercury and is not good. If you do get the shots, be sure they are free of that. When your non-immunized child attends school or daycare, you have to just sign a waiver that the shots are against your personal beliefs and that's it. If there is any type of outbreak, then your child will have to stay away until it is safe. My boys both had chicken pox and were fine. I felt great conviction about this decision and am very focused on my childrens physical, mental, emotional, dental, spiritual health, their diet, etc. I am not a neglectful parent in the least. It would have been much easier just to let others pressure me, but I knew in my heart I made the right choice. Don't act out of fear, act out of being well-informed and personal conviction, which ever way it takes you.

Sarah Q has given you some great resources. I agree completely. I have 3 children (16, 14, 3). I wish I knew then what I know now-my older 2 were vaccinated and thankfully do not have any serious conditions. They do get other minor illnesses that my youngest (unvaccinated) son NEVER gets! He doesn't even get colds. It is not just autism, several other medical conditions are linked to vaccines. PLEASE be well informed and share all the information you can with other moms around you. So many people are told (even by their trusted pediatrician) that they are required for school. As we know, that is not true-why the deception? I wish you health and happiness for your son!

There have been really good studies on MMR shots and autism - except for one, they have all shown no link. The one study that showed a link was retracted by the authors. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE FOR A LINK BETWEN AUTISM AND MMR VACCINATION.

I agree with the moms about splitting the shots. We are doing this. If your pediatrician thinks it is a good idea for your baby, I would go for it just to relieve any worries you have.

I have five children, none have been vaccinated. It is not hard to deal with the public popular view. Better safe than sorry is what I say. I went to school 35 years ago with 2 kids who had gotten the reverse effect from a polio shot. my mind was made up by the time I had kids.

My son is fully vaccinated up to date, he is 2.5 and he is totally fine! Do some more research on both ends, pro and con vaccinations. I did that before vaccinating my son and now my daughter. It is scary but i do not believe its solely the vaccinations that cause autism. A good friend of mine did not vaccinate her son, he is 3 now, when he was 2 he totally regressed in his talking, potty training etc. He was NOT vaccinated and is autistic. I do not believe vaccinations have anything to do with autism.
You should talk to your pediatrician more if you are uncomfortable. Everyone will have their own opinion. Just remember that when you vaccinate you are protecting your child from all these bad and weird diseases out there that could possible be fatal.

There are homeopathic pre-treatments you can give your child before each vaccination. I did that for my daughter, now 9 months old. I live in the coachella valley and go to a homeopathic doctor for these "kits". They're about 25-35 bucks each which is annoying but worth it in my opinion. We have been really concern about this matter. We have a 9.5 month old baby. We did a good research and talked to a really good naturopath. Er decided to make our own schedule. We talked to our pediatrician and although he disagrres with us he has been respectful about our decision. We have split pretty much all the shots and have them spread out through time. So far we have given our daughter only two of the vaccinations, we did the HIB and the one for meningitis, these two because she goes to daycare everyday and she is more susceptuble to these ilnesses.
I found a really good book that was published just last year, so is really current and was written by a pediatrician. It offers some options for arents who decide to delay the shots:
