Hi Everyone,

I have recently moved here from NY state and have a son who has some mild learning disabilities. He is currently enrolled in a private school, but we will need to enroll him in a public school this fall, he will be in 2nd grade. We are in a unique situation in that we can choose a school district and then move into the area because currently we are renting a house in Irvine. Our neighborhood school is Vista Verde in Irvine and although I have heard wonderful things about it I am concerned that it may have too strong a concentration on academics, and knowing my son's difficulties I think it may not be the best environment for him. We would like him to be in a safe, good school which perhaps focuses on creativity or a different angle than the typical "worksheet" curriculum. Any advice would be so helpful to my family and I. My husband works in Newport Center so we would need to be somewhat close to that (within 30 minutes). THANK YOU!!!

A desperate East Coaster- S.

What can I do next?

I've heard a lot of good things about the Irvine school district. However my kids attend school in the Saddleback Valley school district (lake forest, mission viejo, rancho santa marg. ect.) and we've had a lot of excellent teachers.

You might look into public charter schools in the area. I know there is a nonsecular waldof school called Journey in Aliso Viejo (capistrano school dist). http://www.journeyschool.net/

And I know one family who raves bout Orange county educatioin arts academy charter school:

hope that helps.

Hi S.,
I've heard many wonderful things about a school called Jouneys in Aliso Viejo. It is right in my neighborhood, and I know several parents who take their children there. They love it, and if my kids weren't almost out of elementary school I would enroll them there. Here is the link - Good luck.

I have a 2nd grade son in special education in the Huntington Beach area. I worked in Irvine for years and am familiar with the area. You are in a great place. The school will create an Individualized Education Plan just for him around his needs. You need to be super proactive in his eduacation. Any school district will try to push him thru (Irvine is one of the best districts), but I have found that our public school system is definately the place to be for our children. There is a great organization called Team of Advocates for Special Kids - TASK - that helps answer questions and provides seminars around education rites and the special ed. process. Their phone number is ###-###-####. Good Luck!

Hi S.,
As a special ed. teacher, I recommend you have him evaluated by district psychologists to assess his academic level. It is impossible to advise what paths are available to you without formal assessments. My experience is, with only reading difficulties, intensive reading interventions are necessary, ASAP, and are not going to be met in time by public schools at this point in your son's life, as assessment procedures take months of precious lost intervention time. Know his needs, and work for the services he deserves. Squeaky wheel gets the grease, SWUEAK!
Good luck,
Wendy

Hi S.~ Welcome to California :o) Check NMUSD and look at Linclon El. & Newport El. it is in Corona Del Mar & Newport Beach and you can live in Costa Mesa, Newport Beach or Corona Del Mar and he will be bused to school. My nephew went to Lincoln from K-3 and is at Newport El. this year for 4th. (parents choice to move him due to divorce) anyway, he has mild Aspergers and their program has been amazing for him!

Good luck to your family here in Orange County, don't believe any of the reality TV shows about it, I have been here all my life and have never seen "those" people :o)
