My little girl is almost three. She has been great with potty until recent. She has been having accidents about every other day. She knows to go potty, so do I give her time-out for doing this? She doesn't comlain of pain so I am thinking it's not a UTI. Nothing has changed in our house. Our schedule is the same. Any advice....

What can I do next?

reward do not punish. I use sticker charts for improvments on behavior. Then when she has it down, just dont do the chart anymore. I heard this is normal. My trick is (if she wont go potty when i tell her to like if we are leaving for sometihng) i say im going to go , and she says me first. works like a charm.

My Daughter 7 had the same thing, she had accidents for no reason it seemed, no pain. After a couple of weeks she did get pain. I felt so bad. She had a UTI. By the time there was pain it had gotten bad. It couldn't hurt to get it checked and if it's not a uti the Dr may be able to help you figure out what it could be. I would just start with a checkup to be safe.

i once read a book that stated that most children usually revert on potty trainning when one of two things happen...they werent ready to be potty trained or something changed in there life...and putting them in time out is not the answer...it makes them feel like they are doing something wrong and might completely untrain themselves....my daughter is 2 and completely potty trained and when she makes an accident i put a pull up on her (which she hates) and explain that she has to wear them so she doesnt have any accidents i did this about 3 times in a week and she realized that she cant be lazy and potty in her paints and has to stop whatever it is she's doing and go to the bathroom....IT WORKS...

pee accidents or poop?
if it's 'just' pee then I'd tell her to go throughout the day- if she says she doesn't have to, just tell her that 'it's time' and that's that...I have to still 'remind' my almost 4yr old boy to go pee...
I wouldn't give a time out- I would just make her go a lot & hope that eventually she'll get tired of you telling her and she'll go back to telling you :-)

Good Morning L.,

My girls did this. Whenever the oldest child thought their sibling was receiving more attention then the older one was getting (whether positive attention or negative) the oldest child would regress. At the time, my oldest was 4 yrs and the youngest was a newborn. My older daughter would spill drinks, wet her pants or etc...

A suggestion that might help is enroll your oldest in preschool, schedule playdates or even taking an evening walk ~ these are somethings that we did with our daughter that helped.

Good Luck,

J.

They regress and basically need a crash course in potty training again. Just go back to asking her frequently and making her sit and it will click again in a few days. Don't expect perfection yet. Way to go and Good luck!

I personally would not do a time out for that, My son and niece did the same thing about the same age, their ped's both said the same thing..they sometimes go back a bit. We used positive reinforcement..sugar free M&M's!!! everytime they would potty in the bathroom they got to run to the"potty jar" and pic the color they wanted. That was GREAT! after a few months they forgot about the candy(We never reminded) and it was never brought up again. My Niece is 4 and my Son 6.. they still have rare accidents b/c they are playing and don't want to go...but I can tell at this point when they have to go and shuffle them to the bathroom. but this is rare and it brings it to their attention.

Good luck!

No don't give her time outs. It's like riding a bike, sometimes you fall off. Plus it might have been a period when she is intensely occupied in something and wasn't paying attention to the signs. That is okay. Just keep working on it. Mine sits on the potty but has to be naked, the potty has to be in the living room and she still hasn't done it yet. I just tell her next time. Good luck!

Don't give her time outs for this. She'll do it when she is ready. She is still 2 years old and there is no hurry! And you don't want to punish her for not going...just reward her when she does. When she is ready, she will just do it!
