I need referals mamasource! When my now eight year old was born he was pretty much healthy. I had alot of complications with the birth but more on my side than his. He ate good, slept good, and was growing well. Untill he hit four months, when he got some wacky virus or something. They never did find out what it was. He lost weight rapidly and was very sick for weeks. When he finally did pull out of it he was never really the same. Was diagnosed with failure to thrive for not gaining weight which broke my heart. I kept feeling as though I was doing something wrong. He did finally gain enough to be on the growth chart at all but is still on the very thin and very frail side. He gets anything and everything that goes around and seems to get it worse than anyone else. He has juvenile rhemutoid arthritis, a joint disorder, low blood sugar, chronic ear infections and sinus swelling(in the past). Anyhow, this year he started passing out very frequently for no apparent reason. First they said it was hypoglycemia. Then they said yes he does have low blood sugar but more often the reason for passing out was vaso vagal syncope. When he gets too hot, too cold, nervous, excited, etc. his pulse rises too fast. When this happens his brain tells him to slow down and he slows down too fast and faints. This happens two to three times a week, sometimes more. So I thought that they were wrong from the get go about the vaso vagal thing. Anyway, long story not so short, last friday he had a grand mal seizure at school. They did a few tests a month or so ago and are repeating them but I don't want just the pediatrician handling this anymore. I feel very blown off by him and want specialists. I've already got a neurologist for him but need the other two, cardiologist and geneticist so if you all have any recommendations please let me know! Thanks everyone!

J.,
I am so sorry to hear about your son. I am not sure where you are located but I am in Omaha and just recently had an experience with a very sick baby. She was born with a chromosomal abnormality and a very severe heart defect. I highly, highly recommend the pediatric cardiologists at Children's Hospital. Specificly Dr. Duncun, but he is a cardiothoracic surgeon and not just a cardiologist. We dealt with him the most, but one of his cardiologist partners that sticks out in my mind that was great was Dr. Fletcher. As far as a geneticist the one we used was Dr. Schaffer. He works with the Munroe Meyer Institute but also sees the kids at Children's Hospital. He was very knowledgeable, I really don't have anyone to compare him to though because he was the only one we dealt with. From what we saw of him, he was good. I hope this information helps. Let me know if you want any further information!

Hi J.,
I'm so sorry that you are going through all this. I have a similar situation w/ my daughter...not quite as serious, though. I am actually in the process of setting up an appointment with a geneticist by the name of Dr. Brad Schaefer at the Monroe Meyer Institute in Omaha. You should be able to get a referral through your son's pediatrician. It sounds like the only way you can find out what your son has is by getting his DNA tested. Also, I'm sure you have already done this...but has he had any MRI's done?

Good luck and God Bless

THE geneticist I used was at The Med Center located in the Munroe Meyer Building off of Farnam and Saddlecreek on the East side of the street. I don't remember his name though. My son has Muscular Dystrophy and I know what it is and where it came from, so we only had a short visit, but he was a really nice guy. And I was raised at childrens hospital here in Omaha when I was a child, and always had good luck with the faculty there. You are in a good city to be able to receive good care- and I always say, if you don't like the pediatricians answers- find a new one. Good luck

I know Dr. Duncan personally and professionally. He is an excellant surgeon but he only would be involved if they find a surgical problem. Dr Christopher Erickson is excellant and I've also worked with his professionally. He is competent but better yet he is personable. His office number is: ###-###-####.

I would recommend finding a Children's Hospital in your area. I'm in Omaha and absolutely love the doctors there. I've had 2 preemies and the doctors are all very knowledgeable and were great to deal with.
Merry Christmas!
