Need OB in Burbank/Glendale Area. Also, Which Hospitals Are Good?

Dr. Tamayo in Glendale was great when I went to see her a few months ago. Dr. Dwight is downtown at Good Samaritan if you don't mind driving a little bit farther, and he is a great and kind OB/GYN. He's very good at having you have whatever birth experience you want without judgement.

Dr Samantha Han (or any one of the partners in her office) is fantastic. She practices out of Providence Saint Joseph's (St. Joe's to the locals) and I delivered both my kids with her there. The first pregnancy/delivery went off without a hitch and was, by far, the most amazing and beautiful experience of my life. My daughter did end up in NICU for a few days of observation due to elevated levels of something in her blood after she was born (it turned out to be temporary and righted itself in a few days without treatment).

My son, however, was an emergency C section, and while it was really scary and certainly not what I planned, the nurses and Dr. Han responded quickly and did everything they needed to do to keep me calm while taking care of business. If Dr. Han hadn't reacted the way she did and been calm, authoritative, yet gentle the whole time , I would have freaked out. My son would have died without her and the nurses acting fast (there was a blood clot in the umbilical cord, an extremely rare occurrence) and in at totally professional manner. My care and recovery were great as well.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. Han and St. Joe's. Han is a wonderful doctor who is friendly and kind, but she's not too chummy. She's knowledgeable without coming off as a "know it all" or making you feel stupid for asking questions or being concerned. Basically, she has a really good combination of traits for a doctor (and she has small hands!). Also, I have had experience with her partner doctors when she was unable to see me due to a delivery, and I really liked and trusted them as well.

St. Joe's is a wonderful hospital and is our hospital of choice in the Glendale/Burbank area. The nurses are amazing and the rooms are on par with a very nice hotel (the women's wing is only a few years old).

I think you're really lucky to be so close to a good hospital and doctor! Congratulations, and good luck with number 2!

I'm going to have to put in a third resounding YES for Dr. David Newfield. Love him! His nurses/staff are awesome as well.

I never even asked how he was as a surgeon when I first started seeing him a few years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter, because *I* was NOT having a c-section. Ha! Very long, dramatic story short, I ended up having an emergency c-section. He did an amazing job and was accompanied by Dr. Schmones for the surgery (who, by the way, I've heard rave reviews from the nurses at St. Joes - they love him too). I've heard horror stories of c-section recoveries, but I never once had any problems and never needed any pain meds - I felt great!

Dr. Schmones is Dr. Newfield's backup and it's nice to know that the nurses respect him and that he is also a good surgeon. I'm due in May for baby #2 and we've already decided on the c-section date (he's very accommodating on choosing what date you want, as long as the baby is ready of course).

As for St. Joseph's, I really liked the L & D ward nurses. I would say the majority of them were super nice, helpful and I liked them a lot. The rooms are new, but average size - nothing special. It's only the L & D rooms that are huge for your delivery, then you get bumped to the next floor with smaller - but private! - rooms. I co-slept with my daughter and none of the nurses said anything to me about it. They don't have a regular nursery (just a NICU), so the baby rooms in with you. Thankfully, some of the nurses will take the baby off your hands for a few hours so you & hubby can get some sleep! :-)

Two of my friends have seen Dr. Dwight, and both liked him a lot. Two other friends liked Dr. Steven Schmones, who is located in Burbank very close to Providence St. Joseph hospital. I personally love my OB, Dr. Alice Yun who is located in NE Glendale-- she is part of a 3 doctor practice with Dr. Joanna Tamayo (who someone else mentioned) and Kerri Parks. Wait times are short, and they have a lab right downstairs that is quick and never have problems (painlessly) finding a vein in my arm. www.kerriparksobgyn.com

St. Joseph's and Glendale Adventist are probably the two best hospitals in the Burbank/Glendale area.

Dr. Newfield in Burbank has been my OB for 16 years. He delivered all 3 of my children at St. Joes,which is conveniently, right across the street from his office. I have nothing but good things to say about my experiences with him and the hospital. He is thorough and careful, takes the time to answer all questions personally. Most of his staff has been there as long as I have been going there. The office runs on schedule and always seems calm and under control--exactly what you want during what may be an exciting albeit stressful time for you.

Wow... I did not want to mention the horrible doctor's name when I first replied but now I see others have. My horrible experience was also with Dr. Renan. I cannot believe how many other moms here have had the same horrible experience. Why is he still practicing?

Hi!I know exactly how you feel. When I was pregnant with my first boy, I went to St. Joseph's in Burbank and had the most disappointing experience with one of the OB's there. It was my first pregnancy and I had no clue about anything. He was absolutley cold, unfriendly and rushed through the appointment. I took the advice of co-workers and went to Dr. Ronald Woodard at Verdugo Hills Hospital in Glendale. He spent a good amount of time with me and my husband at that first appointment, actually asked us what our questions were (something the other doctor did NOT do), and informed us of what to expect. Dr. Woodard has delivered my two boys (ages 27 months and 8 months) and I have never had a bad experience with him. His nurse and staff are also great. Lastly, Vergdugo Hills Hospital is a great place to deliver because it's a smaller hospital. They spend a good amount of time taking care of you. Congratulations and good luck with your search!

Welcome to Burbank! I also agree that Dr. Renan is horrible. I used to wait for 3 hours to see him just for 5 minutes. I recommend Dr. Newfield. The longest I've ever waited is 20 minutes. His staff is great and efficient. He has the best bedside manners as well. He is affiliated with St. Joes hospital and I had a great experience there.

Welcome to Burbank! I had a horrible experience with an OB in Burbank and his name was Dr. Renan. I had ovarian cysts and during one of my exams he poked my cyst with the exam tool and I almost jumped off the table in pain, and he said "yes" I though that might hurt a little. Then told me I would probably never be able to have children.....and now I have a beautiful 3 year old boy.

I ended up with a great doctor. Her office is extremely busy, but she is so good.

I live in Glendale, but all of my doctors are in Burbank. I go to Dr. Dawn Cashie for my OB. She's located off of Alameda across from St. Jo's hospital in Burbank. I've only been seeing her for a few months, but my fertility specialist in Beverly Hills had recommended her and I have no complaints so far. I am currently pregnant with my first at 28 weeks and will be having a scheduled c-section at Providence St. Joseph's in Burbank. We go for our maternity tour next week so I haven't seen the ward yet, but it's supposed to be very nice and brand new. Also, for a pediatrician, I was referred to the practice of Drs. Lubin, Whang, and Bloom. They are located off of Buena Vista close to the hospital also. Since this will be my first, I've only spoken briefly on the phone with Dr. Bloom, but apparently they come highly recommended, are an all woman practice and each have children of their own. I hope this helps and welcome to Southern California! We relocated here about 2 years ago from the South also and my husband and I love it here!!! There's a ton of stuff to do and explore. Enjoy!!
