Need New Washer and Dryer - Walled Lake,MI

Happy Birthday to me~ my dryer quit drying and then I was watching the washer and it is starting to slip, too. I have been trying to look at appliance reviews all day, but it's much easier to ask you mamas directly, since most of us have a washer/dryer that we use frequently! So, that will be my gift this year- new washer & dryer.
I would like to have an Energy Star washer, although it doesn't need to be a front-loader. Just want something that's quiet, and will last! Our current Kemore set (washer & gas dryer) was purchased from a garage sale and is about 8 years old. The washer was fixed last year- a ring in the adjatator broke- but it seems to be doing the same thing again.
Need something that can handle lots of towels & jeans. -The heavy stuff. If you have purchased within the last year or so, what do you have? Do you like it? Where did you get it? I would like to spend around or under $1000 for both.
Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

We have had a Whirlpool Heavy Duty Super Capacity washing machine for 15 years. Hasn't given us a single problem.

I did recently replace the dryer (only because we needed to switch from electric to gas). We bought a Kenmore.

I don't usually trust salespeople to tell me the truth, so I did a lot of research before buying the dryer (and a refridgerator a year ago). Then I went to Sears. On both appliances, what they told me matched exactly with what my research told me. Point is, I would go to Sears and get them to help you. They seem to be pretty honest and pretty helpful.

We bought a Kenmore 700series dryer last January. It's too loud for the money we spent ($600? - I chose the 700series over the 500 or 600 for the included "quiet pack") and it doesn't match the older Kenmore washer we have, which was really the only reason we went with another Kenmore. If I had it to do over again I'd shop around for a new set like you're doing.

I agree with the other post that Maytag front-loaders can be troublesome. We get an odor if the seal stays wet and doesn't use much water. I get my clothes pretty dirty at work and wash my son's cloth diapers- and have completely ruined my washer. It was a gift from my mom (who loved it for 5 years before passing it along to me during a move), and I am not very pleased with it. (I would never admit that to my mom, though!).

If you are looking for a great deal. I saw in the Lowe's ad yesterday that they have a Samsung pair of efficient washer and dryer for less than $900. The size of the washer is 3.7 Cubic Foot and the size of the dryer is 7.3 Cubic Foot. If you need a gas dryer the pair is $948. They also carry the pedestal for them at $198 (a piece I think) as well. Check the sales papers online for Sears, Home Depot, Lowe's and even ABC Warehouse if you have one close.

Best of luck to you in purchasing your new washer and dryer. I unfotunately can't afford a new washer and dryer right now, or I would be purchasing this pair myself.

Hi J., I don't really think it matters anymore what brand you buy. Everything now days is either made in China or assembled in the USA with parts made in China so there isn't really any good "quality" brands. The Pride in USA quality of the pre 80's manufacturing doesn't exist in China. The Roper brand is a Whirlpool brand. It usually runs hundreds less than Whirlpool itself but the quality is the same.
I hope you find a good investment. Have a great birthday!!!

My parents bought a set of Maytags in 1973 to replace their wringer washer. They still have them! When my husband and I bought our house 10 1/2 years ago we bought a set of Maytags and I have to tell you.... I have not had a problem with them at all. My husband works construction so he has lots of jeans. I do anywhere from 6 to 10 loads a week and honestly I am a HUGE Maytag fan.

Do NOT, I repeat do NOT buy Sears Kenmore Elite front loaders. Mine is 3 yrs. old and I spent a fortune on this set. I have already had to spend an extra $280 a yr. and a half after I purchased it (didn't purchase an extended warranty), on a new computer. The washing machine wraps everything together, so when you go to put your clean clothes in the dryer they are all wrapped around each other and you have to fight to untangle them. Then you have to shake everything out before putting them in the dryer, otherwise they come out really wrinkled. The dryer has to be ran 2 times in order for them to come out dry. As far as all the buttons for different functions, well I usually only use 2 out of 12 options. The kids cycle is ridiculous. It runs for 2 hours, and it double rinses and I find it to be completely unneccesary. The normal cycle is what I always use. You don't need bulky bedding, sanitary, kids, etc. It's a waste of money. And Sears didn't stand behind there products beyond the manufacturers 1 yr. warranty. Good luck.

Our's is a maytag. It's not a front end loader, and with the problems those have, I don't think i would ever own one. I have a friend who has the repair guy out there about once a month. The washer moves on its own, the agitator, has scratched up the door, and constantly is banging into it.

We bought ours from best buy. We shopped around, and then went there, and asked for the scratch and dent section. Our's has a scratch on the side, but no one will ever see it. So we ended up getting a 15% discount since it was scratched, and it was a floor model so that was another 15% discount. so we got 30% off. And we bargained the price lower.

We bought a dishwasher from menards. Also in the scratch and dent. That one the kick plate was dented and we fixed it, and besides no one can see it. And that we saved about 40% off because of the mark.

So look around, and ask for those scratch and dents. Since they are normally a cosmetic thing, there is nothing wrong with the machine itself, but make sure you do have a warranty

We've been going through the same thing the last couple of weeks though it was only the dryer. My husband and I did a bunch of research and found a great deal on the washer. I kept saying I didn't need the Cadillac of washers just something that would get the job done....and I wanted to be able to fit blankets and full size comforter in it because my kids are pukers and it's a must! My husband was determined to find a good one. We found the Whirlpool Cabrio (Whirlpool and Kenmore are made by the same company just different branding.) It's an Energy Efficient top loader with no agitator (5 cu ft I think) and was $400 off at Best Buy. We took the ad to Lowes (who also looked it up online to verify) and they price matched. They almost didn't because it was such a good deal but agreed. There are two Cabrios, this one does not have the clear lid. This was just this week and I don't know how long Best Buy is running the deal but I'm looking forward to having a washer by Thanksgiving and not taking all my wash to my sister's (including everything one kiddo got sick all over!). Whirlpool Cabrio 5.0 6500WW - $630 including delivery, install, and taxes, normally $900. Good luck!

I have a maytag washer and dryer. Before that we had Kenmore washer and dryer. Wish we would have stuck with Kenmore. Kenmore is much more durable than the Maytag brand (yes that Maytag repairman is busy don't let the commercials fool you). Next time I will buy Kenmore. There are many models to choose from and I know they have one that is energy efficient and is large capacity.

First I would suggest going to the Sears Warehouse on Schoolcraft and Merriman (sp?) They have all the appliances that Sears has - but may have a nick in them or something so people didn't want them (and who cares if your dryer has a little scratch if it saves you lots of money - it just sits in the basement anyway is my thought) So - really - I go there and you can get really good deals on all the good Sears products. It is always my first stop. Hope that helps you some and Happy Birthday.

We had to replace our washer last spring, and we decided to splurge and get a large-capacity Bosch front-load washer and dryer...and now we really regret it. The washer is fairly quiet and uses very little water, but takes a full hour to do most loads and I sometimes have to run another cycle because some of the clothes didn't even get wet! So much for energy-saving.Also you have to leave the washer open for at least an hour after running it, so it won't develop a funky smell. I've heard the same complaint from other people about their front-loaders of other brands. The dryer isn't as quirky but also has to be run for extra cycles at times because everything didn't dry. If I had it to do over, I'd buy another set of Kenmore top-loaders...we had our old ones for 15 years without any of these hassles!

There is a place called Sam's appliances ( a well kept secret smile!) located on Grandriver in Detroit, Michigan near the Fenkell, Southfield, Grandriver interchange (Grandriver exit off Southfield freeway). They have unbelievable prices on appliances. I don't know how they sell them so cheap. My latest purchase was a stainless steel GE Profile french door refrigerator with the ice and water component on the front brand new. All parts and components with it. My price 795.00 delivered. The catch it has a small noticeable dent on the front. Someone returned it to the store and it landed at Sam's appliances. Trust me it is so nice the small ding/dent adds character to my smile. I also purchased a front loader dryer there (Duet Whirlpool a new model slightly used comes with a warranty for 300.00 (the total price of the dryer was $300.00 with the warranty included. it is quite and heavy duty. I am loving it. Lastly I purchased a top loader Maytag washing machine from this same place. It's a heavy duty washer and has all the bells and whistles with respect to all the different buttons and choices you can make even extra rinse cycles. The dryer has all these amazing features as well. The washing machine if I can recall cost roughly $275.00 They also have a second location on Greenfield in Detroit. I believe I purchased the refrigerator at this location. I hope this helps. I will certainly go there again if I need something. I purchased these items all at separate times as needed.

We just replaced our washer and dryer about a year ago. Got the GE Profile Washer and Dryer from Home Depot. They have been wonderful! Energy Star rated, Quiet, and lots of great features I never thought I would need, but use quite often now. We needed to fit King size comforters and this set does that with ease. Also love that the agitotor in this washer is low profile and does not ruin clothes like standard machines can. It has really been wonderful. Most stores have rebates on this set often too, so you can save money in the process. I would definitely choose these again if I were tobuy another set in the future.
My parents bought the Maytag Bravos set around the same time--they have a few more features like steam refresh on the dryer. They have had to get them serviced once already (not sure if that is common though). Other than that incident they love those as well.

I bought a GE Profile set last week at Lowes - top loader, high efficiency washing machine and a dryer. Cost just under $1300 for the pair. Stinks when both appliances go at the same time! Haven't had them long enough to be able to tell you much about them. They do the job, I can say that. The washing machine is supposed to hold 16 pairs of jeans.
