After 8 years and my 5 year old son standing on the dishwasher door while it was being emptied my dishwasher is ready to go! I'm trying to find a new one but there are so many to choose from and they all say their's is the best! I know moms know best on cleaning appliances so here we go. I'm looking for a dishwasher that is quiet and has a delay as well as the obvious it actually cleans well. Hoping to stay at or below the $1000.00 mark but would go above is necessary.

Miele's really are the best. I'm not sure if one would fall inside your price range but they are extremely quiet, have the best space configurations and clean exceedingly well.
About a year ago I got an LG dishwasher it is silent at 48 Decibles and it cleans great and has more than you could ask for. It has a great layout and is very versitle, I can always fit all my dishes in because the racks all move up and down to fit in bigger dishes where you need to. One problem you might have is it's very energy efficient so the drying time after it's done washing is about 2 hours. That is my only problem with it. I think it is on sale at home depot for $699.00 and maybe free installation.
i've never purchased a new dishwasher, have always lived in places with old, but functioning ones, but when i have purchased new appliances, i've always purchased kenmore ones from sears. other people have told me kenmore is the most reliable brand. check out online ratings at the sears website.
We pruchased a Whirlpool Quiet Partner 980 Series about 12 years ago and haven't had a lick of trouble with it. It is quiet, adjustable, has a delay, a rinse and hold, as well as a tough food disposal (for little bones, dry noodles, etc). So far it has gotten us through 6 kids of our own along with the numerous other children, pets, and treasures that come with having a big family. I don't remember how much it cost us, but I know it was well below your limit. Check out Sears for whatever the newest version of this one is. I'm sure you'll be happy. Good luck =O)
I need a dishwasher too. I suggest looking at the Fisher Paykal stainless steel drawer dish washer. You may not know the name but it is BIG in medical circles but this is an in home dish washer. You can buy one or two drawer. Easy to install and easy to service. It cleans thing spotless in less time to wipe up the kitchen. It is the one I am going to buy.

I just got a Kenmore high efficiency middle line one. It's very quiet. I'm not liking the layout much; having a hard time figuring out where to put all the dishes. It cleans alright, but I frequently have to clean the filter, and the glasses in the corners often still have debris on them.
We got a Stainless Steel Kitchenaid Diswasher. We were between it and a Bosch. The sales person at Standard TV and Appliance in Beaverton was awesome. He helped us compare and in the end he showed us how the Kitchenaid would be quieter by dropping car keys on the inside of each door when open. Hands down, the Kitchenaid was quieter. He also asked us tons of questions on how we use it and really helped us. I think we paid about $600 for it. We've had it over a year and a half and it is great. We can actually run dishes and hear the TV.
I've had my dishwasher for at least 20 years and so don't have any idea about what is currently on the market. When you said you want one that is less than $1000 I gulped.
I do have a suggestion tho. If you find the dishwasher that has the features that you want and it's to be built in you can make it quieter by adding another layer of insulation. I used they kind that comes in a roll that fits in between the studs. It was the right width and is easily cut to the right length. If there's room make it 2 extra layers of insulation.
My father had an appliance store and repaired appliances too. He said that part of the reason some dishwashers are quieter than others is because they have more insulation.
In response to the Kenmore brand. Kenmore's appliances are all built by other name brand makers. The salesman can tell you who made the diswasher by looking at the model #. Usually the same brand sold as a Kenmore is less expensive.
When I bought a new washing machine I really liked the Whirlpool one that I was replacing. Turns out the Kenmore that I chose is made by Whirlpool.
I do think that Sears is a reliable dealer. I do usually start looking with them.
I have a Miele dishwasher and still love it over 4 years later. I've never had a problem with it. My stepmom put one in shortly after me and loves hers as well. At the time I bought mine, the only place in town to get one was Basco which is at the top of the Everett St. exit downtown. They don't make the model I bought back then but I think the G 2150 SC Diamante is most like what I have (based on research I did in 11/2007). The key features I would suggest looking for are
1. Separate cutlery tray -- this is the unique feature of Miele. The silverware is layed out on a top, third level rather than in a basket taking space on the lower level. The items get cleaner with a separate sprayer up there and when you unload you can just touch the handles. Plus this is a great place to lay out sippy valvles and lids.
2. Prefinished model -- these are complete meaning you don't pay a separate price for the controls and the door. This is the 'less expensive' way to get a Miele. Dont' get me wrong they are expensive. I payed $1200 plus $220 for installation over 4 years ago. I believe it was worth it!
They seem to offer many more prefinished models that when I bought mine. Also, I went with the standard tray for the top & bottom rather than the 'upgrades' I prefer the simple loading rather than all the fancy racks that make it harder to fit in my items.
My machine is so quite that I can run it and stand next to it on the phone. I never worry about starting it just before company arrives or interupting sleep.
There is a food catcher basket at the bottom that you have to empty periodicly. I check mine every few months and really don't rinse my plates. If you leave a lot of solid stuff on the items, it might require checking it more often.
The heated dry can not be turned off on mine. At the time I bought, that was the case on all their models. I think it still is. But a really cool thing is the heating element is in the side wall rather in the bottom of the machine. This means no melting plastic if a straw or lid falls through. Also you can put anything on the lower level since the heating element is why an item gets labelled 'top rack only'.
