I am 5 months pregnant with child #2 and I am not feeling well. My worse thing is when my nose is stopped up and that is what I have. Is there something I can do for this. I blow my nose often and that is hit or miss as to weather I get anything or not. I have also tried the water/salt water pic thing but that only helped temporaliy. I am not sleeping well due to this. I know Nasonex is not really good to take but I have been using that some to try and help but that is not working. I use cough drops at night to help with the dripping in my hourse throut. Help needed...My head feels HUGE! Many thanks!
The brand Little Remedies_Little Noses is a nasal drop medicine that is safe for all ages 2 and up. I gave it to my son way before he was 2. I use it when my nose is stuffed because I am very sensitive to over the counter medicines. I bought it at Walmart. Hope this is helpful.

Sounds like you have pregnancy rhinitis. I had it and it was awful, always stuffed up and couldn't sleep because of it. I used the nose strips(eucalyptis when i could find it) and they helped a little. I put vicks on my chest and under my nose. That helped a little. I used sudafed, my Dr. said i could. I did the sinus rinse, didn't help much.
Good luck, mine really didn't end until i delivered. I had already had severe sinus problems for a long time, though. I did go to an ENT, who diagnosed me with the pregnancy rhinitis. She had suffered the same thing as well.

Hot tea with honey and lemon. Believe me, Ihave no idea why, but it works. I use it with my 10 yr old and my 7 yr old too. Its even better if you can use local honey, because it helps with allergies, if that is what it is. Hey, try it, its better than using meds...

Chronic rhinitis (inflammation of the nose) is one of those wonderful side effects that some women experience during pregnancy due to the increased hormone levels. It is completely normal and mine was accompanied with snoring and having to become a mouth breather at night. Some women will also get a bloody nose. I had this with both pregnancies and still have it and my daughter is now 1 month old. If this is what it is and not a cold, you should try to avoid taking medicine. My doc said to try saline drops and a humidifier like you would with an infant but I didn't notice much difference. This to will pass. Hope this helps.

You should talk to your doctor to make sure that whatever you take doesn't negatively affect your baby! Sudafed was on the 'ok' list with my doctor when I was pregnant in 2007 but it is better to be safe than sorry!
Good luck and God Bless!

Sudafed is still considered on the safe list.
I see you say you've used the salt water thing, but honestly, though you have to do that a lot, it's one of the best things. You need to irrigate. When the poster below suggested the neti pot, that is a way of irrigating using salt water.
I use an Essential oil blend to help me with congestion right now. I don't like to put unnecessary meds in my body while pregnant, and the right essential oils can be perfect. I put a few drops on a little cloth and put the cloth on my pillow. My daughter (who has a stuffy nose right now as well) and I can both inhale it while we sleep, and we are not congested at all. I've also put a few drops in her humidifier (cool mist) to help us.
I don't know where you are, but if you have a natural food/health store nearby, they can help you find what you need. I've found that this helps my baby and me much better than meds.

All I can say that no one else at this point has said. Go to Walgreen,s or similar. And talk to the pharmacist. They are better trained to know what is better for your in-uterine baby than most doctors. They can help you with the natural stuff as well as over the counter. I love Walgreen's because they are open 24 hours and even if you are not picking up a "script they are more than helpful. Good Luck.

When I was pregnant with my son I had a sinus infection and my doctor told me to take suddafed. I am now taking tylenol pm (only sometimes) to help me sleep at night when my head really hurts. Ibuprofen is a no no but I am not sure what else you can or can't take.

My doctor allowed me to take claritin D when I was bad. He just didn't want me to take it during breastfeeding as it may dry up my milk. You can also get a nettie pot (sp?). I bought mine at CVS or Walgreens. It will flush you out. Mine came with premixed packs so you don't have to think too much about how much salt to put in, etc. Keep Vicks vapor rub - or eucalyptus oil mixed with olive oil. You can also drop some eucalyptus oil on a wet rag and hold over nose. Keep your air humid. Hot showers. Ice packs on head and eyes. Steam - hold a towel over steaming water in pot with head under towel to loosen things up.

You can take benedryl and use affrin. Both are acceptable to use during pregnancy. I had the same problem while I was pregnant. My allergies went haywire. You should also talk to your obgyn and see what she reccomends.

When I was preg, I had to take Afrin. Just don't take it longer than is recommended or you stuff up. You can also put some vaporub on your upper lip. If this has been going on for more than a week, please call your doc. An infection is likely if you are congested for too long and that is not good for you or the baby.
Good luck!

You need to check with your doctor and not just go with what people tell you on here. Just call and ask, and if what they tell you doesn't help, then unfortunately you may just have to wait it out. I had an awful sinus thing while I was pregnant and it took about 3-4 weeks to feel better. Most of the time it's not a sinus infection and all you can do is try to treat symptoms and let it run its course. It sucks, but that's all you can do.

I was immediately going to recommend a Neti Pot but it sounds like you've already tried the nasal flush. It is temporary but you can do it several times a day for some relief! Can your doctor recommend an OTC or even call in a prescription for you?? Hope you feel better soon!

Hi J.,
I, too, have been suffering with this congestion mess that is going around. I have found that using a neti pot is very helpful with the congestion. You can get them at Wal Mart and Walgreens. It allows you to flush your sinus passage with saline solution. I have used that morning and night and have made it fairly easily by doing so. It is amazing what that can flush out of your sinus passages. You might be able to get by with simply using that and foregoing any meds since you are pregnant.
I hope you get some relief cos I know how miserable it can be.

You can take Sudafed, but not the PE kind. You have to use the original formula which you show your ID & sign for from the pharmacist. Do the saline rinse with warm salt water in your water pick twice a day at least. It's not going to hurt & the more you do it the more it helps, particularly 1st thing in the morning. Feel better soon!

The salt mixture is the best thing at this time for you. You can also use for the throat a mixture of honey and lemon juice. Even some honey in hot tea will help alone with a slice of lemon. These will help break up the congestion and the sore throat that you have. Hope that you feel better soon. Been there.

I was told when I was pregnant that I could take Sudaphed. The real stuff that they keep behind the pharmacy counters now, but it kept me up at night. I also, pre-pregnancy, was on Singular to help the non-stop drip of my nose. Even if my allergies weren't bothering me at a particular moment, my nose would still drip constantly. The Singular works differently then a regular allergy medicine. And the best part was I could take it while I was pregnant. When I first found out I was expecting I dropped all the drugs I was on as every first time paranoid mommy does. But then the drip started again. I tried saline sprays and Nettie pots in which all I ended up doing is drowning myself and making myself feel worse. Finally, I went back on my Singular and everything was much better. Talk to your doctor about it and maybe consider seeing an allergy specialist instead of your OB/GYN for this problem. They are really up to date on the science of these particular meds and what they do to your body when you are pregnant.
Just make sure you quit using the Nasonex. It's a steroid and is a big no no for pregnant women.
Here are a few things to try...Netipot, waterless vaporizor, garlic tablets (garlic is a natural antibiotic), chicken broth, and putting Vic's Vapor Rub on the bottom of your feet and socks on over it so it won't get on your sheets. We have had excellent success with the waterless vaporizor. Hope you feel better.

Morning J.;
Here's what I do to relieve that stuffed up nose!!
I take a small sauce pan, the smallest you have, and put
some water in it and then one spoonfull of "Vicks"!
Bring to a boil and inhale it thru nose and mouth! The
steam that is! I normally do this about 5 minutes before going to bed and it allows me to sleep thru most of the night!
Good Luck,

The decongestant Sudafed is approved for use when you are pregnant. It is over the counter but you have to pick it up from the pharmacist because it is used by criminals to make other drugs. My doctor allowed me to take Sudafed, but check with your doctor to make sure she approves.

Hi J.. If I were you I would try the natural remedies first just for the sake of avoiding medication. However, I seem to recall that when I was pregnant, it was okay to take anything that was Tylenol. This included cold, sinus, etc. So if the natural remedy doesn't work try a Tylenol product. Congratulations, goodluck and God bless!

I used Robitussin CF (dr said it was ok) - it helped get the "stuff" out. Also drink lots and lots of water and avoid milk while stuffy.
One more thing- I had polyps in my nose and had no idea- suffered for almost 2 years- I was miserable- my right side was completely stopped up and I had major sinus pain that even made my teeth hurt! If it continues and doesn't get better- you may check into seeing a ENT.
I feel for you!!!
Hope this helps

I'm almost in the exact same situation. I'm 5 mth pregnant and have allergy issues. Mine don't seem as bad as yours but I recently had my ears cleaned out. There is a lady I know that does ear candleing and it pulls everything out of your sinus cavities from pollen to wax. A couple of times I've been borderline sinus infection. I just had it done again this weekend and it pulled out all sorts of pollens that were in there. I've tried nasal strips and those only help temporarily. Let me know if you would like her number.

I highly recommend Xango juice. It is not medicine, it is completely safe for pregnant/nursing moms. It is safe for kids too. It is super high in anti-oxidents and has a multitude of other great properties, including anti-histimine. I was so happy with my own health results, I became a distributor. It was the best business decision I've ever made. The company gives a 30 day money back guarantee, so there's no risk. Call me for more info at ###-###-#### and visit my website at www.tryxjuice.com. Blessings!!!

Try the nasal strips that you stick on the bridge of you nose. I found them great. Be careful peeling them off as they can take the skin after a few times. They really opened up my nasal passages when I was pregnant.
