Need Kids Digital Camera Recommedation for 6 Yr Old

Has anyone out there bought their child a digital camera they can recommend? I am looking to purchase one for my 6 yr old daughter for Christmas. I do NOT want a Playschool starter camera. She is pretty clear she wants a "real camera" preferrably one in pink. I know the costs are all over the board. It doesn't have to be a kids camera, I just don't want to waste my money on junk. Any positive recommendations would be appreciated.

Don't buy the little ones with the removable face plates (I got one for my son that has blue, camo, and some other color). This is not worth it. It only has one button to push to pick the settings. It is confusing and does not hold many pics. I saw some at walmart for $29.99 - JUNK. At least try to find one that takes an actual memory card not just internal memory.

I am a photographer and bought my kids an Olympas that is "drop proof" as well as waterproof. It is 8 mp and comes in awesome colors for under $200. It is excellent!

My parents bought my daughter a Fuji a couple of years ago. It is really easy for her to work. I was at Wolf camera recently and did see a pink camera, I think it was maybe a sony. Check there and Best Buy also. I have had great luck with both her Fuji and my Sony.

We got our 5 year old the Disney Pix, and he loves it! With it, you have the option to add Disney characters to a photo when taking the picture. You can even add Mickey Mouse ears or a tiara to someone's head! lol

Wlamart and target both have some 'real' camera that are in a gift set package. They range about $30-$40. It is a great way to let her practice and actually get decent results. Then you can upgrade later.

You're right not to get a "kids one" we spent $50 last year to buy one that hardly works and we've not once been able to download any of the pictures. It's horrible and I felt cheated! Unfortantely, it was for my step-son and we didn't get it opened and try it out before the next time we came and he was a little young at the time... well by then it was too late to take it back! Also, we're on all Macs and it is only for PC, but it didn't clearly say that on the box, so you'll want to make sure either way! Good luck, photography is a beautiful thing!

Hi M.,

I'm not sure about one in particular, but you might wanna check Walmart's electronics isle, they have alot of cameras for little ones. I think Playschool has one that's supposed to be water and drop proof. I'd only get on that you could hook up to a computer and print out the pics.

Check out www.amazon.com. I just saw one there last night. It is made for kids, but it is not "little kidish". I believe it was $49.99.

We've benn thru this ourselves because our 5 year old is a huge fan of picture taking. I would suggest one of the one shots you can get at target. If you watch the sales they can go as low as $59 or $69 dollars. I'm not sure what your budget is, but I wouldn't buy anything less than 5 MP. Poloroid has one that they keep on an end cap away from the camera counter by the printers usually that is quite reasonable.

Good luck!

We just bought our 6 year old daughter a Kodak EasyShare C713 7MP Digital Camera in pink. It is not a kid's camera but it is simple to use and gets good reviews. She loves it and it seems to have been a good purchase. The only downside is that because it is NOT a kid's camera, it's more likely to get broken. But we got her a case for it and have drilled it into her head that she needs to be careful. So far so good, but we've only had it about a month. It was around $80 on Amazon. Good luck.

Try eBay. We were able to get a real one (Canon Powershot) for way less than the price of the kiddie cameras out there. It was used but in great condition.

My 5 year old niece has a Disney Digital Camera. It takes great pictures, you can review pictures in the screen like a regular camera, and it automatically shuts off after 1 minute. You can even add a princess to each picture. It's pink and doesn't look like a playskool camera. I don't know how much it cost, but knowing my sister, it wasn't that much. It is indestructable too. I watch my niece drop it multiple times and just pick it up and kept using it.

My daughter is 8, so she is a little older. I just found a digital camera at Limited too. They have three different price ranges, I got the middle and I think it was $40 (on sale). I think if you go on their website they show it.

We bought one for my son for x-mas and did alot of research - then my son was on a hunting trip with his dad and I got it out ot mees with it - It is great! I got is at Frys and I bought a 4 gig memory card and all the accessories including an extra battery for $227.00 after tax. It was a "Casio" the one that advertises it is good for "You-tube" Anyway I was able to take a 40 min video as well as over 200 pics and still had room for more with the 4 gig memory card. It was very easy to download the pics and video and I can not wait to give it to my son for x-mas. He wanted a video camera and a digital camera - and this was both in one camera. Im even a little jellous! His camera my turn out to be better than mine.

We have a Sony Cybershot and we love it. We use it as a family. My daughter is almost 14 and she has asked about her own camera.

She has been using our older model Fugi which is a great digi cam as well. The downside to the Fugi is that we keep putting batteries in it and if you travel, you have to make sure you take plenty of batteries. Other than that, it is a great camera.

We did spend more than you would probably want to for a 6 yr old on the Sony. I do like the recharable battery that comes with it. We bought an extra battery so that we can always have a backup. We also got a larger memory card. I love teh Sony.

My suggestion is to go to Best Buy. The staff is knowledgable and can guide you to the right camera. There are many cameras out there in different colors, etc.. I am sure there is a reasonably priced one for you.

The main thing to NOT do is to go cheap. Buy the best product you can afford that will last her a while. We are big Best Buy fans because we have been able to get good quality advice and products (dishwasher, fridge, computers, cameras, wii, gaming products, etc) from them and they stand by their products.

Enjoy!
