Hi moms!
We will have 1 week of vacations and would like to go to Tennessee or North Carolina mountains, any suggestions? I'm thinking about Boone, NC or Gatlinburg, TN but I never been there, the budget is limited and i'm not sure about where to go. We are traveling with my husband and my 2 teenagers kids. Please let my know your comments and also if you know about a cabin to rent.
Thanks a lot!!

We really like Blowing Rock, NC. It's a small quaint little area. We often stay up on Appalachian Ski Mountain- there are a few rentals up there. It is a very small and extremely family oriented ski lodge. You are a short distance from lots to do... you could even make it to Ashville if that suited you.

If you go to Gatlinburg, TN there is a ton of stuff for teenagers and you are only about an hour and a half to Cherokee, NC (best of both worlds!) Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge are close by...lots of shops, Go Kart tracks and rides, but because the weather can be pretty unpredictable, you would want to check with each place of business...some close up shop during the winter months. The lights are so pretty during the holidays though and if you are lucky enough to see it snow, it is so gorgeous. A lot of people go to Gatlinburg for Christmas so i don't know how hard it will be to find a hotel/room/or cabin for your family. Check out Ober Gatlinburg...they have an ice skating rink...There might be some snow skiing available too, but I did not check those out when we were there.
Hope this helps!

We went to North Carolina this summer and stayed in Robbinsville. It is near the border of Tennessee. You can check out cabin rentals on vacationrentals.com.

We are huge fans of the Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge area. I think that Xmas might be one of their prime seasons, but you can always find deals on cabins. Google Pigeon Forge TN cabin rentals and you will see TONS of them... many are rent 6 nights get one free, etc. There is plenty to do. Free stuff (hiking in the mountains, etc) and cash stuff (putt putt, go-karts, helicopter rides, and tons of theaters. If you have never been to one of the medieval times type places, then Dolly has one of the best, and their Xmas show is great! (and unlike some of them, so is the food). It's called the Dixie Stampede and it is WORTH it. Pigeon Forge and all of Sevierville is plenty close to Gatlinburg, plus a little less expensive. You can picnic lunch at a little park down in Gatlinburg next to a stream. walk around in the shops in G'burg, and also there is Ober Gatlinburg (ice skating and arcade is there... in winter you can ski too). EVERY store/restaurant has those discount coupons for just about everything, so before you pay, grab those things and flip through.. you can usually save a few bucks that way. They also aren't far from Maggie Valley and the casinos, etc. Most of the cabins have hot tubs and full DVD set ups, so you can cozy in and play boardgames and drink cocoa to your heart's content. Dollywood is a great amusement park, too. SEveral roller coasters (for the teens) and concerts, etc.
Have a great Christmas! (Wish I was going this year...)

We have gone to the mountains for the last two years. The first year we stayed in Northern Georgia and this year we went to Gatlinburg. I would say staying in North Carolina is deffinately cheaper and its not that far a drive to Tennessee or wherever you want to go. Maggie Valley in NC is one of our favorite places, it's a small town but so beautiful. We go horseback riding there everytime, at Cataloochee Ranch. The view from up there is amazing. Its about $50 per person but it's worth it. There is a lot to do depending on what you are looking for. Good luck and I hope you have a great vacation. It is beautiful up there.

I have never been to N Carolina so I can't weigh in there, but Gatlinburg/Pigon Forge Tennessee was a whole lot of fun. We just did a search on Pigon Forge and it came up with all kinds of sites including several places that rent cabins. You can rent cabins in all kinds of price ranges with all kinds of amenities including hot tubs, pool tables and gaming systems. The rental companies are very good about making sure the cabins are clean and in good repair. We didn't have big budgets so the biggest thing we did was the Ripleys Aquarium, it was amazing. The rest of the time we just did sight seeing in Pigon Forge. On other trips my daughter and her children have been to Dollywood twice and both times most of the rides were out of order and she said it just wasn't worth the price, that would be up to you to decide. (It's the only amusement park she has ever said that about, and she has been to dozens). We look forward to another vacation in that area. Have fun.

I have been both places and I would recommend Gatlinburg, because I believe your teenagers would enjoy it and there are a lot of things to see and do their. We stayed right at Gatlinburg and I would recommend you have a place to stay ahead of time because this is somewhere a lot of people go. I'm not sure about cabins, but you could call in and around Gatlinburg for information. Have a wonderful vacation. C.

I have property up in Limestone, Tenn. which is near Greeneville Tenn. Boone N.C. is very expensive and so is Gatlinburg. The Best thing you could do is stay in Greeneville and be able to travel everyway. Seiverville has all the attractions, you can go to Boone from there and also Johnson City & Limestone the oldest town in Tenn. But it would save you alot of money to stay away from the above places and go there by car. all are within a 30 to 60 min ride. Hope this helps it is beautiful up there and the people are very nice.
