I have a 16 month old and he had the same thing last week. I took him to the dr. and was given antibiotics because he had an ear infection that made his eyes infected. Funny thing was that he never ran a fever or was cranky. He is doing 100% after only 5 days on the meds. Go to the Dr., he is not too young for antibiotics or eye drops if he has pink eye.

My son just had conjunctivitis (pink eye) with the exact same symptoms as you are describing. It is an easy thing to remedy with the right treatment. My little boy needed eye drops 3x a day for 5 days and now he is as good as gold. I dread going to the Dr since both me and my hubby work, but it was worth it to see my little one better.

Hi S.,

I was always told that when it's that bad it's an infection of some sort and Antibodies would help in this situation. Especially when it's yellow or green. I think he needs the Doctor. In the mean time you should probably use saline and help him to sleep at tilt to help drain some of that stuff. Closing him up in a bathroom and allowing the shower steam to loosing some of that up. Putting vapor stuff in his bath at night.

Oh yes, and a little benadryl could help dry some of that up. Well that's all I got... Good luck .

There is actually a virus going around and if it is as you described the dr. may want to prescribe an antibodic. I have a 8month old grandson and because his was so thick and yellow the Dr. gave him an antibodic.

My daughter is the exact same age and just had all the same systoms last weekend- turns out it was an ear infection. I thought it was pink because of all the eye mucus, but the doctor said the infection in the ear affects all, so the infection was also comming out the eye! Now she is one Omnicef, and doing much better! I say, call the doc- you can give your baby relief, and ease your mind! Good luck!

Hi,
My son is 23 mos and he has the same thing - cold simptoms plus pussy gunk out of his eyes. I took him to the DR this morning and she prescribed some antibiotics. She also found out that he has ear inflammation and pussy throat (that I couldn't see myself). And eye gunk wa stsrting pink eye... So, I highly recommend to take your baby to the DR, you never know what can also happen! For now, try to use Visine to clean his eyes - that helps (one should hold him and you will need to open his eyes (one after another, ofcourse) and just put the drops in that they would run out, not too much though). Hope it helps!
Get well!

Personally I don't think he's that young that the doctor wouldn't give him any medicine. If the discharge has thick yellow, he probably has an infection that an antibiotic can take care of. If not taken care of, it can turn into something worse. Something to keep in mind if you try the natural remedy stuff and he hasn't improved much. With little ones, you really do have to be careful because simple things can turn into respiratory problems that hurt them more and take longer to heal.

I would take him to the doctor. Don't be embarrassed for taking him. I know it's hard, you feel silly, but better to know than not. By the way, I learned with my second baby that teething can turn in to a cold, which then can turn in to an upper respiratory infection. I did not know that! We thought she was teething, then the runny nose bit and all, then coughing. Took her to the doc. Nothing, just wait it out. Then two days later we were playing and she was fine, then she turned and looked at me, she looked like she had been crying but no her eyes were pouring out water, then I felt her head, she went from nothing wrong with her to a 102 fever. I ended up taking her to the emergency clinic and sure enough she had an upper respiratory infection. That's where I learned that teething could cause it. Then I researched on the internet and sure enough it's true. So my point is, if you take your baby and he is fine, don't be embarrassed to take him back in a day or so if you feel something is not right. You can also try a cool mist humidifier at night that works for both my kids. My son would drain really well in a steamy shower, we just sat on the floor of the shower while it ran. My daughter does not respond to that as well. So give the steam shower a shot. If it works, we did it in the morning after he woke up and just before bed time. Good Luck!

It is allergy season. He has a sinus infection. The doctor will give him C-Phen which is a Antihistimine/decongestant it is benedryl for babies. My son 19 months is just getting over a one it starts clear then turns yellow. Also he will need Amoxicilan which he will take for 10 days. He will feel so much better after he gets the meds. your older son might have an eye infection. Please send your $20.00 copay to me to my paypal account. LOL...Hope your babies feel better soon.

Take him to the Dr. I always think the same thing and when I take my kids it is always more than just a cold.

I feel the same as you. It is better to be safe than sorry. I don't know if they are in contact with other children, but I know pink eye is going around also. My 8 month old had it and also a really bad cold about 2 weeks ago. Cool mist humidifiers work great, I also use the shower, run really hot water and just sit in there with them. Also a warm moist soft washcloth for the eyes will help to. I have heard for congestion people have put baby vicks rub on the babies socks at night but be careful if they can touch them. I would go to the doctor though. i think all moms run them there even if it does just turn out to be a cold. Always keep in mind, cold can turn into more serious conditions such as respiratory issues and pneumonia. Good luck!

Hi, S.. I'm guessing their cold symptoms have turned to sinus infections that are just oozing out of their tear ducts, too. I've seen it. They'll probably need a round of antiobiotics to clear it out. But for future reference, when they start to get those cold symptoms, train them how to "snort" saline water, either homemade or store-bought. It's a homeopathic way to prevent the snot turning green/yellow with infection. Works for adults, too. Try to avoid lingering sinus infections. Can become a lifelong problem in some people.
That's my two cents. I'm a mom of a 16-year-old, 12 yrs., and 7 yrs. Actually living in Africa at the moment. Hope it helps. --L.

You can try the saline spray for the nose - they make some called Little Noses Saline Spray. They also make Claratin and Benedryl for babies - you may have to call the Dr. to see what dose to give them though. It is possible that they are having issues with Alergies. My Pediatrician has told me that the majority of colds start out as an alergy to something. With the polin as bad as it is now - any time my kids start with a runny nose, I give them claratin (they are 2 & 4) - it usually stops it from turning into a full blown cold.

Good Luck!

I know how you feel, going to the Dr's can sometimes be frustrating. You're right, a lot of the times what kiddos have is viral and there are no antibiotics to treat it. I always take my boys just in case, especially w/ the eyes. It sounds like it could be pink-eye. Especially w/ the green snotty nose and boogy/matted closed eyes. You can always call your Pediatricians office and speak w/ the nurse. My theory is to take them in, if it's nothing than good, but if it is something, I'd hate to ignore it. Hope this helps and good luck!

Green and yellow snot are a sign of an infection and they need antibiotics. He is not to young for them. With the "boogery" eyes, it could be allergies, it is the season for them. There are children's allergy remedies available, such as Claritan (sp). You need to go to the Dr. to find out what it is and get the right treatment. Take it from someone with chronic allergies, they are no fun. The snotty nose is nothing compared with the sinus pressure headaches, if they have them they will most likely need the allergy meds.

I would take them to the Dr. right away. It sounds like pink eye/conjunctivitis which is very contagious with out meds.

I would still take them to the dr. There are bad strains of the flu going around right now and they come out of no where. My 3 year old spiked a 103 fever out of no where end of last week and ended up having the flu.

Hey S.,

The best thing I have found is to take the kids into a steamy shower and get that mucus loose. Also a humidifier is a great thing to have. Pretty much all you can do is make them comfortable and happy. So a warm washcloth to clean those eyes and soft tissues for the noses, oh and lots of patience and love. You will get through it!

My daughter seems to get sensitive with her nose every time teeth were cutting through. I have reacted super fast, this is what has worked for me;

1. Little Noses by Little Remedies (Decongestant Nose Drops)

2. No bath, the hot to cold can make them feel worse (especially wet hair and ears) Unless you dress him in the bathroom.

3. Run the vaporizer before bed time.

4. Nothing cold to eat or drink.

5. Control the AC in the car and the house.

6. Footed pjs.

When my daughter was a baby much younger than yours, she got a couple of colds and the doctor said I could have the pharmacist baby dosage nose drops for her. It was an over the counter brand like Neoseniphrine maybe and it was cut in strength for an infant. She was still miserable but at least she could breathe . As for the matted eyes, that tells me and eye infection that maybe you could get ointment for so I would call the doctor. He may be able to suggest a children's cold medicine that the dosage can be changed to accommodate a baby.I am now a grandmother of 5.
