My daycare is an in home daycare. She worked with me on the price and I appreciate that. Still, I have to pay everyday whether she is sick or my kids or are sick. Is that common? She says it is. I don't know if I could find someone else that I can afford and she's licensed. It's hard because my kids have been sick a lot recently and I have to take off work, but still pay her eventhough I'm not getting paid for that day. Please let me know if this is the "norm". Thanks

What can I do next?

Yep, totally normal. They usually have some vacation days each year too where you have to pay even though the kids don't come. Just think of it like you getting paid for your sick days at your job.

I run an in-home daycare, and I don't charge for the days when kids are sick. It's my opinion that things happen, and if their kids are sick, and I am not watching them, then I shouldn't be paid for it. I know this isn't the opinion of most daycare providers, but my theory is, the parents are being paid, so why should I?? Now I REALLY don't understand you having to pay when she's sick! That's rough!!

Hi there-

While I know how hard it is to be strapped and have to pay for daycare, I can tell you that this is more the norm than not paying daycare for the days you aren't there. I can tell you that only about 1 in 10 providers will allow you to not pay for those days. It's unfortunate but it's their income too. They need to be able to rely on a certain amount per week and if they don't get that, it hurts them. Daycares are even more strict about this. I hope this helps.

We use to use an in home licensed day care too and yes, we had to pay when our kids were sick. Yes, it stinks, but if you took them to any other licensed facility, they would also charge you. Now, that being said, paying her for when she is sick? That I would have to disagree with. Why are you being penalized for her being sick? We used 2 day care, in home, licensed daycares and we NEVER had to pay if our provider was sick. That just seems absurd. When we call in sick to work, we are not paid for that day. (ok, most of us have sick days, but still). How do you know that she's not going to being using her "sick time" every other week? I would have to fight her on this one - but that's just me. Hope it all works out for you! Take care!
