Nortons and Wilder are great schools. Wilder has the advanced program. Both schools have good orchestra and extra curicular activities. I'm like you, I'd fight bussing my child to Portland tooth and nail!
Well we decided that we couldnt afford private school this year so we checked out a ton of public schools and picked our cluster schools blah blah blah. we live in the east end (westport rd) and they are trying to send my daughter to Atkinson!! in Portland! I am totally out raged of course and refuse to make my child ride all the way down there. so we have looked into a few schools around our area. springdale which does not have Kindergarten, St mary which is full and wants a $500 non refundable deposit, and st Margret mary which wants us to become members and pay a bunch. we also looked at walden (super close, where i went and a great school) but we are too poor for that. so if any east end moms in jefferson county ky know of any good schools or even just kindergartens in the wesport rd area... please please let me know! i really dont want to homeschool her but i will!

Try calling St. Martha's. I have called almost every Catholic School, so far, St. Martha's is the cheapest and I have heard a lot of nice things about St. Martha's. My son had been discriminated at Highland Middle School and I am so tired of it that I am putting him in a Catholic School.
I am not trying to start a debate, but are you against Atkinson solely due to the location? Have you actually looked at what Atkinson, as a school, may have to offer your daughter? Maybe this is an opportunity to teach her about diversity and let her see that although you had a chosen school in mind that life does not always give us what we want. It may be that Atkinson has the program that exactly fits her and she will thrive in the environment. My son is also starting school in the fall and I chose Kennedy for its Montessori program - not for its location (which by the way is the Russell Lee neighborhood @ 34 St, between Dumesnil & Algonquin - off 264). I know that my son will not only thrive from the program but from the exposure to the many different people that our world is made up of.
You can try St. Luke's...you don't have to be a member to enroll your child in their program. The programs are small and really good. It is located in "Anchorage." I put quotes around that because it's literally a 5-10 minute drive from Westport Rd. It's off of Evergreen Lane/Shelbyville Rd. I can't remember the rates, but I remember it being cheap when compared to other schools. Here's the director's contact info: Becki Kostrach at ###-###-####, and here's their website: http://stlukesanchorage.org/index.php Good luck! (You can also apply for a hardship transfer through the public school...don't let them bully you into bankrupting yourself...I hate our public school system....governed by idiots.)
