Need Help Finding a Learning Specialist

First talk to his school. If public they should provide testing and programs. Also ask for a refferal and the application for Scottish Rites. If private ask the counselor or his teacher for a application for Scottish Rites. Both should have them on hand if they are good schools. My daughter has dyslexia and goes to a private school. We got her tested at Scottish Rites. Once diagnosed, etc. you can go to www.altaread.org to find a therapist. That is who Scottish Rites recommends you use.

If you are not comfortable with what the school system is telling you, you are right to seek outside help. Scottish Rite is a great resource. Another is the Shelton school in Dallas. They have evaluation and parent education resources beyond their school. They have a website, www.shelton.org. A place that you can get information and meet other parents with similar concerns is the Northeast Tarrant Dyslexia Council. Their website is www.allcanread.com. After reading what you wrote I really felt for your frustration. It seems that since someone is a specialist and has offered her services you have what you need. I just wanted to tell you that my son, who is 5, started kindergarten and I was worried. Not to mention I have an 11 y/o daughter who is G/T and a 6 y/o daughter who is also G/T. I was really concerned because I had never seen this before. He did the same things that you said your son did. Couldn't read, transposed numbers and letters, however after talking to his teacher she said that we should give him some more time. So now we are in the 2nd semester and everything seems to be on track. It just took him a little while to get it I guess. Boys can be a little slower at learning, so I have heard. I my case that seemed to be the case any way. Good luck!! I hope you get the answers needed.

Texas Scottish Rite is an AMAZING place! You might also want to check out the Fort Worth Child Study Center http://www.cscfw.org/

You should contact the Child Study Center in Fort Worth. They can diagnose any learning disabilities and make recomendations to his school for modifications to his class work. Your school should, by law have a specialist that can also diagnose these things and set him up with learning specialists that are paid for by the state. If you haven't already, try talking to the school couselor. They can SOMETIMES be very helpful getting the ball rolling for you. Good Luck!

T., I really feel for you I have a 13yr old daughter who has struggled through school from the beginning. We are in the HEB school district and finally after fighting with the school for years and testing every other year for special education she finally qualified this year. She has only ever passed 1 TAKS test which was in 3rd grade. She has gone to summer school every year it was offered since 1st grade. We did 2 years at Sylvan Learning Center(totaling $16000 at 6hrs a week) and toutering before and after school. The school continued to promote her to the next grade level even though she was not reading on grade level. They said according to their test she was not Dyslexic but had dyslexic characteristics.
The Good news is that their is help out there. The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children has a wonderful Dyslexia program. The even do the testing. Its a free hospital all monies are received through private donations to run the hospital. They have an application proccess and you need your doctor to sign it and then you need a mason to sign it as well but the hospital will help you with that part. It's a great school for typical kids and those with dyslexia or other learning differences. The tuition is affordable and Dr. Flint is so knowledgeable about these kinds of special situations. If nothing else she could at least steer you toward some great help!
