Need Good Orthodontist for Kids in Chicago

My eight year-old daughter had an evaluation by an orthodontist at Pine Dental (a pediatric dental practice) who said she has a cross bite that needs to be corrected with braces within a year. The cost will be $3,000, with $1,000 payable up front. Has anyone had a great experience with another orthodontist in Chicago who treats kids? I'd like to get a second opinion before going back to Pine Dental. Eight seems young to need braces, and $3,000 seems high for a treatment that is expected to last less than one year. Thanks for your recommendations.

I would try Dr Lippitz at Lippitz Orthodontics. I know many people who have taken their children to him are very happy with him and the results. Their office is in the city is on Western and Touhy and their number is ###-###-####. Good luck.

I spoke with a Mom a few years ago after she took her child to Pine, she felt very pressured to put her young child in braces, she too thought her son was too young. We both came to the conclusion that they basically tell every child who walks thru the door that they need braces and want to do it very early. Definately get a second opinion or use your best judgement. Sorry I don't the name of someone else to take her to.

My BIL took his sons to a dentist near Fullerton/Clybourn/Ashland. I cannot remember the name but it is right across from Wendy's on Ashland, more on the corner of the intersection. He said they were great. He had gone to anther dentist originally and went there for a second opinion. They were also cheaper than the other dentist and let them make payments.

Try Major Dental and Dr. Domagala. He is very good at what he does and honest and consultation is free. If you have x-rays that would be even better. He can give you his opinion if braces at that age will help or not. The phone is ###-###-####. As far as cost, it does seem high for baby teeth, but again it it is child specialist doing it and they feel they can command that price I suppose.

Our daughter is 6 and has already had work done at her orthodontist (Conlon and Thompson in McHenry - northern suburbs). She had a cross bite, an underbite and severe crowding. She had an expander put in over the summer (approx 6 months)- it did 2 things: 1. made more space for her adult teeth and 2. corrected the underbite by moving the top jaw forward (it connected, via small rubber bands, to a piece of head gear she would wear at night). She will probably have a little bit of braces next year. All this may prevent braces as a teen. All of my nieces and nephews have had 2 stage orthodontia - braces at an early age and then a shorter run of braces when they were 15-16.

We actually got a second opinion and they both concurred. We initially got a referral from her pediatric dentist, saying some work would be necessary in the next 2 years. So I guess we had a 'third' opinion if you count the dentist.

We had an excellent experience -- over 12 years, no less -- with Dr. Ralph Robbins in the Golf Mill center. Both my sons had braces, the elder also with jaw surgery, and we went to Robbins twice annually for a good 10 years before he was ready for treatment. We were never charged a penny till he got the braces and we were never charged more than the initial quote of $5000 from Day 1 till we were finished. My younger son had much more straightforward treatment that also went very well.
Sadly, $3000 is not much for orthodontia and I doubt you will find good work for less. If Golf Mill is too far -- Golf Rd., I think in Niles, toward O'Hare; we were in Edgewater, about 20 minutes' drive -- do ask your dentist for another recommendation. Good luck! It only seems like forever!

I would get a second opinion. 8 seems a bit young for braces, she still has teeth that are going to fall out and bigger permanent teeth will be coming in to shift thing around. I am in the south suburbs but I use to go to Dr. Watson on 81st is and Stony Island on the east side of the street. He has retired and his daughters are now running the practice.

It sounds like you need a second opinion. Please go see Dr. Henry Schuppert at 2835 N Sheffield. Here's his number: ###-###-####. He's extremely nice and knows what he's talking about. He will give you a consult. We've been going for a year and a half--my older one (now 13) has braces, and my younger (10) has had a spacer and then a retainer to make room for her adult teeth. They both have had amazing improvement since they've been going. If your child isn't ready for orthodontia, he'll tell you that too. Good luck!
