Need Dairy-Free Bakery!!!

My daughter's 5th birthday is upon us and this year she really, really wants a Little Mermaid cake. The problem: she's allergic to dairy and mom isn't an artist. In the past I've made her cakes and decorated them myself but this year she'll be having her first friends party and really really wants a little mermaid cake.

Can anyone recommend a bakery that does dairy-free kids cakes? I'll drive to Chicago if I have to.

Thanks in advance,
Jen

My son has a milk allergy and in the past I've struggled with where I could get special occassion cakes.
Fleckenstein's Bakery in Mokena (approx. 196th and LaGrange)can make very nicely decorated angel food cake (no milk) and their frosting is milk-free.
I live in South Plainfield -and it takes approx. 25 min. for me to get to Mokena.
Hope that helps.

You can try Wee Cakes. They are egg, nut, soy and dairy free. I checked into it last year for my daughter but made my own cake instead. The numbers are:

Kirsten ###-###-#### or alex ###-###-####

I think they are in Western Springs

Hope that helps.

If you are able to bake a cake simply decorate using an actual little mermaid doll. Wrap the doll in seran wrap and sit in the cake and frost around it. Kids love it and get to play with the doll after the party

My son has allergy to milk but it is not life-threatening. He can eat a cake made with a little milk but he can't eat the frosting. Last year I ordered a cake with fondant - and it was very pretty. We ate the cake, the fondant went to the trash (too artificial, no dairy though). I did a little research on the internet...

Another mom at my daughters preschool (in the Warrenville area) decorates cakes. If you made the cake she might be able to decorate it for you. Email me if you want me to ask her.

If you can't find a dairy-free bakery, you can purchase enzymes that will digest the dairy. When the diary is pasturized and homogenized, that enzyme is cooked out of the milk. Thankfully, it can be overcome by supplementation. You should be able to purchase them at any drugstore, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, health food stores, etc.
