Hi! My 4th grader wants only a Nintendo DS for Christmas. He'd like to have the DSi version. What's the difference between all of the Nintendo DS models? I want him to have the best, but I DO NOT want him to have online access. We believe the internet is a dangerous place for children to be wandering around & want to stand firm on this. Is there internet on all models? Can you put a parental block on it, that he can't figure out how to remove?
Also, he has game boy advance-are the zillion games he already has compatible w/the DS?
Any suggestions are helpful!
Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My kids have an older verison of the just plain "DS" that still has a slot that completely fits the Gameboy games. After that came the DSLite which has a slot for Gameboy games but the gameboy cartridge sticks out when you put it in. After that came the DSi (and DSiXL with better internet browsing) which does NOT have a Gameboy slot. Only the DSi & DSiXL can go online.
Between my 2 kids we probably have about $500 invested in 2 DS units and a tons of games (at about $20 each). We decided to go the handheld route instead of the tv game system so they can take them along on rides or for long waits at the dentist, etc. Also, DS has MANY more game releases as a platform than the PSP handheld. They still have their GameBoy Advance SP units and still play those as well. The DS has the dual screen with touchscreen for many games, but the GameBoy is just such a small easy-to-hold format that your son will probably still play that one as well. Any of the geek/gamer clerks at GameStop can give you tons of good advise. Enjoy!

The DS lite is the version that does not have net access.
both other versions ( DSi and DSi XL) have it.
The lite also has a slot for those Gameboy advance games. The i versions ( DSi/ DSi XL )do not have the slot.

The DS lite is the way to go for you.
Look at places like Gamestop and get a refurbished one for cheaper, also some places , like Gamestop or Ebgames will give you a discount if you trade in the older system. They also have used DS and GBA games.

S.,
My son has a DSi. The only way he can have internet access for me to set it up. The DSi also has parental controls. My son has had his for about a year but if I'm not mistaken, parental controls are set up with a parent password. So my son can't change them.

Good luck.

My son just got the DSi XL version and there is Internet but it also has parental blocks, so you do not even have to enable it, that's what we did. I like the new XL version because the screen is so much bigger...

The only version w/out internet is the DS Lite ...you will hve to get him one with internet if you want one with the camera ... I might suggest you go to a Game Stop or something simmilar and ask them all your questions, or PM me ... I happily own one.
