I am so sorry to hear about your mother. Try priceline.com You would be surprised at the deals you can get.
We got some very bad news yesterday...my mom has inoperable cancer. My 10 month old and I are going see her in Florida. I'm on vacation until January 7th. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to purchase affordable last minute tickets? Spirit airlines seems to be the cheapest I can find. I am definitely going to buy my son a ticket so that he can travel in his car seat.
Thanks for all the info and good wishes. Southwest was the cheapest by far.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom! My husband and I have used lmdeals.com aka site59.com many times and have had experiences. It's the site that yahoo travel, etc. will route you to if you click on their last minute deals tabs. I've booked airline and car rental and airline and hotel (though I'm sure you don't need a hotel)... Good luck and take care.
I may be late for this, but I found out a few years ago that United discounts infant seats if you purchase for a child under the age of 2. You can't get that discount online. Call the airlines before you book anything online. Often times you can get better deals on the phone!
I;m so sorry to hear about your mother. kayak.com has great deals as well as lastminutedeals.com. good luck!
N.:
also try southwest airlines.
