You poor thing! We teach them to share and then look what they share with us! :-)
You could call a lactation specialist at one of the local hospitals. They can probably rattle off a dozen or more meds safe to take while breastfeeding. There is also a book they'll know of that lists numerous medications and tells how safe they are with breastfeeding. (Wish I could have the book myself, but it costs upwards of $100!)
If all else fails, ask the pharmacist at Walgreen's or CVS. They've always been very helpful to me. I think Claritin is safe to take as long as it's the 12 hour version that's NOT behind the counter, but it's been a while since I've had to break down and take something.
When you talk to someone, be sure to tell them you don't want to take anything that might decrease your supply as it already tends to drop a bit when we get sick. Keep nursing as often as you can and suck down your fluids! It will help keep your supply up and you'll probably provide a bit of immunity help to your little one.
Hope you're feeling better soon!

The best advice online is at www.kellymom.com. She is a mom and a lactation nurse, and she posts evidence-based information, i.e. based on research.
Good luck!
My pediatrician told me that most over the counter meds are safe to take when nursing. Tylenol is for sure fine and so is any allergy meds. You just have to be careful with sudafed type products as they can slow your milk supply down. Good Luck.
I had the flu about a month ago and my 5 moth old is on strictly breastmilk. My doctor said it was OK to take Sudafed or Tylenol Cold & Flu (the orange liquid). I took Sudafed and felt much better in about an hour. Make sure you ask for the Sudafed behind the pharmacy counter that you have to sign for. The stuff on display isnt strong enough for the flu.
Hope you fell better soon!
You may have the flu and you might have something else. The flu usually involves fever and body aches and sometimes intestinal problems. Tylenol will be safe until you are diagnosed. What other symptoms do you have that make you think you have the flu? Chicken soup and lots of fluids - maybe some echinacea tea or something, but I wouldn't go taking a lot of other stuff. Unfortunately when breastfeeding and ill, it sometimes means we have to suffer a bit more. I would definitely call in whatever favors you have outstanding from friends and family for help with taking care of the whole family while you are sick. Dad may need to play nursemaid for a couple of days. Rest and hydrate.
this is going to sound nuts, but take raw garlic (or you can do the pills, but raw is better). smash the garlic to release the juices and eat as much of it as you can stand. eating it with walnuts helps the intense taste. garlic is antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial. if you're not taking a cod liver oil supplement, i would highly recommend that. the omega 3's in it reduce inflammation and it does come in tablets or liquids. also, get off pasteurized dairy (milk, yogurt, etc...) as they are mucus forming. you may want to stay off wheat for a while too as it does the same thing. there is a book called "smart medicine for a healthier child" that i get A LOT of info out of. i apply it to me as much as to my kids. gives conventional, homeopathic, and herbal treatments as well as prevention and dietary guidelines for tons of issues.
good luck and hope you feel better.

I am SOOOOO sorry. I just went through this myself. This might be a time for your husband to use some of his sick leave to help with the kids.
In the meantime, you can take any tylenol product you want. But beware of anything with pseudophedrine (or whatever else they put into Sudafed these days.) It can dry up your milk while drying up your nose.
So, get in bed and stay there as much as possible. Drink lots of water. And breastfeed as much as possible to keep your 7 month old from getting it!
i know when i was breastfeeding i couldnt take anything with anahistamine. or however you spell it. so i would look to see if anything has it. yeah i know dr takes forever to call back. dont ya hate it.
If you are breastfeeding beware of any meds with antihistamine in them. It will dry your milk up. Check your labels carefully.
