Hello! I am in need of some advice...my husband and I have been trying to conceive for one and a half years w/two m/c. I have learned I have PCOS and a very mild blood clotting disorder that has been affecting the ability to go full term w/the p/g's. I have been taking clomid and will be taking my last cycle next month. My doctor said we could choose to do an IUI (which isn't covered by our ins) so I don't think we will be doing that. My OB said if the clomid dosnt work then she will be referring me out to a fertility specialist. My question is should we just not go because I believe we are limited on options w/our insurance. But if we did go what would they do that my dr hasn't done? I was just wondering what the "next step" would be and if any of you ladies have experienced this? Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

My husband and I saw Dr. Jonathan Ayers. I didn't have the exact problem you have but we found success with Dr. Ayers, as have the friends we have recommended to him.

Good luck!

It would be worth it to go, just to see what the dr suggests. I also have a blood disorder called positive anti-nucleur antibodies (is that also what yours is?), which caused me to miscarry twice before finding out that I even had it. I went to a fertility specialist who referred me to a rhuemotologist (sp) who put me on medication to surpress my immune system and was then able to carry my daughter to term:) Fertility Specialists help with more than just IVF or IUI, and since my assistance was minimal all was covered by insurance.

Hi M.,

I'm sorry that you're experiencing infertility issues - whether it's primary infertility or secondary, it's always an emotional rollercoster.

My husband and I tried for 5.5 years (without any insurance either) before we were blessed with twin girls on our 3rd IVF attempt. Unfortunately, some of it was trial and error and we didn't find out until late that I also had a blood clotting issue (among other things) and was put on Heprin.

Anyhow... during our struggles we found it helpful to talk to others dealing with similar issues and attended many Resolve meetings and events. You may want to check out Resolve's 8th Annual Spring Event - which is an Ask the Expert type of gathering on May 1st at the Royal Oak Beaumont campus. You can find out more through the following link: www.greatlakesresolve.org

Anyhow, as I found out during our journey, treatment and experiences can be as unique as the individual so your best bet is to be your strongest advocate. I wish you luck!

Hi M.. I also have PCOS. My husband and I thought that we would have to see a Fertility Specialist, but we were wrong. I had a healthy baby boy on Mother's Day of 2007. My Doctor is wonderful. His name is Dr. Lall. He works in the Harper Professional Building, located in the Hutzel Hospital/DMC area. Check to see if he's available under your insurance. I know plenty of woman that he was been able to help with pregnancies. Good Luck!!

Hi M., I had 3 first trimester miscarriages when Doc gave me option to go to a specialist. I'm glad we did! He did testing that indicated we could get pregnant, so we did and
this pregnancy went to full term - beautiful healthy baby.
Specialist was able to do tests and with quicker results/answers than regular doc. That's just my personal
journey, but my point is there is hope for you. Check to make sure you know what your insurance will cover before you rule it out. God bless.

Hi M.,
I too had many problems getting pregnant. I did 2 rounds of clomed and finally figured out on the second that my mucus was too thick. I had a friend tell me that she took robutussin because it thins all the mucus in your body. It can't hurt to try. I now have 2 children and took robutussin both times. If things do fail again I would go the next step of seeing a specialist. You don't have to go that route but I would at least listen to your options.

Hi M.,

My husband and I tried to have a baby for 4 years and with the help of Drs. Dodds and Young, we now have very healthy twins (boy and girl) that are 7 1/2 years old. Our situation was different than yours, but it's worth getting second and third opinions on what options you have to move forward. Their address is 630 Kenmoor, SE, GR, 49546 ###-###-####). Good luck!

I have been seeing a great fertility specialist in Grand Rapids. They also have a Kalamazoo office. It is called "The Fertility Center". I would totally recommend them. They have a website too. I had 3 miscarriages and my reg. OB said that it is just bad luck and I can either try again or call it quits. I just wasn't pleased with that answer and pursed other options. The fertility doc was awesome at doing some tests and they know better options. I was on clomid, but didn't work. I tried another pill and that didn't work. I now am doing shots of Follistim. I wanted to try all options first before IUI. I know that a single IUI costs around $250.00. Anyway, check them out online! They are fabulous.

Hi M.,

I went through infertility for 6 years before having my son (who is now 6 yrs old, can't believe it) and then we decided to try for another baby and it only took us 4 months!! Now with my son it was IVF, with my daughter we were lucky and only had to do IUI. Now and IUI when using your husbands donation does not cost a ton. When I did it, it was way under a grand and if you need to most doctors will put you on a payment plan.

My doctor was Dr. M. Hayes who works out of an office on between Hall Rd. and 19 Mile Road on Garfield. She is a specialist and is WONDERFUL!!!!! I would be happy to give you her info if you live in the area or are willing to come to this location.

Good Luck!

Here's my thought on a specialist... go and see what the doctor has to say. She is a specialist and therefore has a much better understanding of your challenges and what she/he can do to help. I have a fantastic doctor who I would recommend hands down. Lynda Wolfe. She is from RMA in Troy. Absolutely fabulous.

Oh, M., I have so been there. We had a great fertility specialist; but, I have to tell you, it was not fun. Not fun at all. It was horrible on my marriage and worse on my body. In the end, we adopted. Now I have a wonderful son who loves me and I love him. If this is something you would consider, please ask me about it!

Good luck with this decision.

Oh my gosh M. - this is exactly what I have been going through. My husband and I had been trying for 5 1/2 years with nothing and I also have PCOS & a pulmonary embolism. We even went through IVF w/ICSI and it did not take (told it was due to undiagnosed clotting disorder). After we tried the IVF, we were devastated and were going to give up trying. But I came across an article in “Conceive” magazine about every fertility monitor currently on the market and the best one for women with PCOS is called “the OV Watch”. After spending $10,000 on a failed IVF cycle what was another $200 for a watch and it came with 7 sensors, so would last 7 months. Well, thanks to the gods above on my 2nd sensor we became pregnant!!! Please check this option out before going through with any procedures. My OB had never heard of this before and I brought him all the paperwork and he is now literally recommending it to his other patients. You will need to be on Clomid again, but along with the watch you have an excellent change of it working better. The website is called ovwatch.com Good luck.

I'm wondering which Blood clotting disorder you have? I have Factor V Leiden and MTHFR. What do they have you on for that? I take a baby aspirin everyday and when I became pregnant I had to start shots of Lovenox. I am now 22weeds. BEfore that I had lost 2 pregnancies. I wish you lots of luck. I also needed the clomid to get pregnant it always took 2 months on it and 100mg before I got pregnant.

What can help you, is first dealing with the PCOS. There are nutritional supplements I can recommend that has helped other females.

Once the PCOS is under control, this will but your body in a healthier state and will give you a much better chance of conceiving and carrying a baby full term.

If this is something you are open to and would like to explore, email me with your phone number and the best day and time to reach you.

I went thru fertility treatments for 2 yrs before getting pregnant with my triplets. I did not have PCOS but I was not ovulating and also later found that my cervical fluid was acidy and killing everything. The fertility specialists can do more tests and put you on stronger meds than your regular dr can. I saw the fertility specialists at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn and was very happy with the care I recieved.
