Need a Pediatrician!! - Noblesville,IN

I just took my son in today for his 12month check up and when I told the doctor that my husband and I have chosen not to give him the MMR vacination, he told me that their office policy is, if you don't agree with their immunization schedule then you can no longer be seen there. I was shocked actually, but I really don't want to be there if they cannot understand my concerns. So now I need to find a doctor that will respect our decision as HIS parents. Anyone have any advice on how to find a good doctor that will do this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I homeschool my children so it's not a problem for enrolling in school. I have done plenty of research and this is the decision we have mad for our kids. I am just looking for a doctor that will allow me to make that judgement for my children. I am not looking for any negative feedback on whether or not you think I am doing the right thing or not.

We moved to Anderson about 1 yr. ago, but we kept our daughters pediatrician, Dr. Kain. She is with Noblesville Pediatrics & I told her I wanted someone that would listen to us if I had concerns about the vaccinations or anything else. It sounded as though they wanted the parents to be involved. I believe they will be a good option for you to look into. I don't know anything about any of the doctor's around Anderson.

I agree that if you plan to never immunize him with MMR, you'll have a tough time. (Not to mention he can't go to preschool or enroll in kindergarten.) But, my pediatrician will support waiting until he's 18 mos to be sure he's on track and help alleviate autism concerns. That's what we've done with our kids. They are Carmel Pediatrics at St. Vincent's in Carmel.

I'd call around for office policies. My friends who don't immunize all see family practitioners, not pediatricians and none of them follow the visit schedule that is recommended (1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, etc...). They just trust that they know their child well enough to seek help if there is a problem. Another option is to find an orthopedic doc who is more on the alternative meds side and tends to stay away from unneeded shots and medications.
On another note, you may get message from moms saying you are bad for not getting immunizations. I assume you have done a lot of research before making your decision. Ignore the negative responses and go with your gut. And, you can send your child to school, it's a misconception that schools won't let your un-immunized attend. It's actually illegal to force a parent to medicate their children. Private schools can but not public. Preschools and daycares could be more of a challenge because they are usually private, but you can find those that agree with your choices.
Also, saying that "most doctors won't want to treat your son" is just ignorant. Doctors don't turn away an unimmunized child - how do you think children from other countries get treated? We are one of the only countries that demands that we drug our children at such a young age!
Good Luck!

For the record, we do immunize, but I think it's the parents' choice.

I just wanted to say that most doctors probably wont want to treat your son if he dosent get that shot because they feel if anything happens that they will be held responsible legally and you know about doctors its almost always about the money!

Hi,

My son sees Dr. Keiser at Olio Road Family Care. She does not necessarily agree with our decision to withold immunizations (most of them) but she did not kick us out or make us feel bad.

Hang in there!

Dr. Gollnick with Northstar Pediatrics in Fishers. She will allow you to make the decision for yourself and respect your beliefs. I applaud you for being an advocate for your son and sticking up for family in a situation that is not popular in the medical community. I was surprised by some of the answers that some ppl said that you will have problems if you don't vax. I know plenty of families that don't and there is a religious exemption for public schools in Indiana. With everything that is in the news now, I think the tide with change with time.

I hope you find what works for your family! S.
