What do you do for a sore throat? We need a natural rememdy for a throat infection. My 9 year old Granddaughter has asthma so she already takes way too many prescriptions and she gets a lot of ear, sinus and throat infections. We do the salt water and vinegar gargle. She drinks decaffe tea and lots of water and she eats healthy a lot of organic and natural foods. Is there some supplement you can suggest that is natural?

Thanks

Hi K.,
I would agree with the comment about the possibility of candida, I have had that and read the book "the yeast connection" to learn a lot about it. Doing a cleanse would be helpful, there is a mild 7 day colin cleanse that you can get from Market America as well as other products(www.marketamerica.com/jendiehl) that I can give you free shipping on if you call me: ###-###-####. I have tried the Aloe Vera Juice and found that helpful with this as well (it's an anti-viral, anti-fungal drink). It'll help her if she cuts back on her sugar intake and eating yeast. I've been doing the "Transitions Lifestyle System" classes and have learned a tremendous amount from that about eating low glycemic index foods that will also help her with this. I would be happy to help you if you can call me.
Thank you, J.

Have you tried honey? My toddler son has a cough that typically lingers after a bout with a cold. Honey is the only thing that seems to soothe him. My neighbor swears a teaspoon of syrup works too, but I think there is too much sugar in that. I prefer the honey.

What's the saying about an ounce of prevention? I would suggest looking into the isotonic vitamins for kids that my sone takes every day called "might-a-mins" (all vitamins are NOT the same) at www.marketamerica.com/thevoiceoftruth. They seam to help him to not get those pesky sore throats and or sinus/ear infections!

I can tell you more...

It sounds like your granddaughter may have Candida. This is an overgrowth of yeast in the colon. With being on so many prescriptions this does occur.

With an adult, I would recommened a detox and cleanse. Since she is only 9, she can do a "mild" version of the detox and cleanse.

Make sure that the salt you are using is iodized. Its the iodine in the salt that kills the bacteria. Also make sure the water is pretty warm.
Ensure that this is not allergy related. Many times its not an infection, but rather drainage down the back of the throat.

Throat infections are not related to asthma. Perhaps she needs an ENT evaluation if she hasn't recently had one. Asthma is a big enough problem in itself, there is absolutely NO reason she should have to live with ENT troubles, as well. I know you can find some docs who will embrace your desire for natural remedies!

Better Health or Whole Foods should have some Colloidal Silver. That's a natural product, good for a lot of different troubles.

Online there's Homecure, which offers Colloidal Silver products.

If this just started... I recommend Aconite (for a sore throat that comes on quick!). Mercurius is for when infections are present also but when dealing with homeopathics (as these are cheap, effective and do not have other side effect as well as do not interfere with some medications), there's many more to choose from due to what is going on! Feel free to call me if you want more info, I have a whole bunch of natural remedy info that I use. OR if you are nearby, I can come up with something else to suggest (like an essential oil to try in the vaporizer ... I use only those that come from a French distillery as most in the stores are tainted.). ###-###-####... Or see if you can find your local reflexologist for a session for your child?

By the way, when I use these on my family... the typical time frame is about five days for a serious infection and the symptoms are less severe than what we used to experience prior to when I used to treat them without oils/ homeopathic medicine/ reflexology and massage. I myself only suffer for two days max with a cold.

If you use any Honey... Please make sure it is RAW honey as this is actually filled with more of the anti-inflammatory properties and good stuff vs. then the broken-down golden honey... (make sure if you do this, you never give it to any child two years or younger...)

My 16 mth old just got over the RSV that has been going around. What worke for us was honey in with a little bit of limeade. I know it may sound weird but the citrus helped to break up mucous and the honey helped to coat the throat. She did so much hard coughing with the virus that her throat was very red and inflammed. We noticed that she slept better if she had the mixture before bed.

If you are interested, send me your email address and I will email you the current "coupons" you can use to order online through 3-31-08.

And just to add to other's posts about honey- raw honey is the best- contains all the healthy enzymes, and tastes better too! Good Luck!

My great pediatrician, who has 7 kids of her own, said honey is the best sore throat remedy...I guess mixing it in some tea would be best ("spoon full of honey makes the medicine go down" seems like a pretty inciteful lyric now ) =)

Tea and Honey make a great cough syrup. I gotta tell you that my throat hurts if I gargle with salt. Salt and vinegar are very acidic and can agrivate the throat. My son had the same problem and he got much better after he started seeing an allergist for his asthma. He is twelve now and hasn't had many problems in the last couple of years. For now I would cut back on the salt and vinegar and offer some popsicles. You can freeze fruit juice to go the healthy way. Then tea with honey not to drink, but a teaspoon, you make it thick so it coats the throat. I do have to say that parents used to add a small amount of whiskey to this mix, but nowadays that is frowned upon. I learned it from grandma and I gotta say, the old ways work great on me.

If it's from post nasal drip maybe you could try a neti pot. You use it to wash out the sinuses. She might be old enough for it. It's funky at first, but you can head off almost any cold with it. They have them at almost any health food store. I also use GSE, great fruit seed extract mixed with water (it's bitter, and must be diluted) but works well. You can us it as a gargle, and drink it as well. You can also read the homeopathic remedies at the health food store, they make it easy to find the right one.
Good luck. A. H

My oldest son used to get tonsilitus like every other month, until the doctor asked me if we were using those "fabric dryer sheets" like bounce. He informed me that the fiber in the sheet breaks down and becomes like fiber glass in the clothing and in the air. I stopped using the sheets and not only did the throat and ear infections cease so did the recurrant yeast infections. Now I use regular fabric softner and wet down an old wash cloth with it and throw it into the dryer with the wet clothes. Works great, cheaper, and safer.

You may want to ask your Dr to refer you to an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat Specialist). You may find that if her tonsils are removed the other things may regress. My son had a few ear infections so we removed the tonsils and adnoids. They were unusually large and were pushing against the ear canal not allowing it to drain properly. He has not had a sore throat or ear infection since.

Good Luck!

Hi K.,

Have you tried Zinc and Garlic. Garlic kills infections and boast the immune system. Zinc is for pain relief, healing and improves the immune system. And lots of vitamin C.

I don't know if she is to young for Goldenseal and Echinacea. You might want to check because they are good for asthma and throat Infections.

Hope that helps :-)

P.S. I would also be careful about drug interactions if she is on alot of med's. Natural med's and herbs can interact with each other

www.i-care.net/herbdrug.htm

Here is one site but there are several more. Just put the med's she on and contradiction in the search.

Cinnamon is a natural antiseptic. I drink lots of cinnamon tea when I get my throat infections and it helps. Also, I noticed that a lot of people recommended honey. honey helps if its just the throat. However - if she is also having a sinus infection with a lot of drainage, be careful with that - (I get that too!) - I have to stay away from honey & dairy because i get sooo much drainage that if I coat my throat anymore, I have trouble breathing. (And yes, I have asthma too!) I'll have to try some of those other homeopathic remedies menntioned here myself, though!

Have you ever tried Nutrilite vitamins & supplements? They are 100% certified organic and are grown in the U.S.A. No fillers & tested by independent labs. They have something for allergies as well. Also, though it's not ergonomically correct, I personally sleep with my head slightly elevated so any drainage I do get goes down.& not get stuck in my head. At the most difficult times along with tea I use a tsp to a Tbsp of honey. Watch that late @ night or she won't be the only one who can't sleep. Good luck

My daughter had chronic strep throat to the point where they were ready to take out her tonsils. From the advice of a friend who had sinus surgery at the Mayo Clinic we started using a NeilMed Sinus Rinse. I know for sure you can get them at Walgreens (you can go to this link and it will take you right to the product at Walgreens - www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100095&navA.... This will help relieve allergies & sinus symptoms which are probably what she has going on with the sore throat (post nasal drip). It’s been 2 years and my daughter still has her tonsil and we’ve only had a few breakouts of strep since we’ve been using the rinse.

I highly recommend the Seagate Olive Leaf Throat Spray (homeopathic). http://www.seagateproducts.com/olive-leaf-extract-spray.html

Seagate Olive Leaf Extract is the best alternative antimicrobial therapy, without the side-effects of antibiotics. The spray comes in two versions: Unflavored and Raspberry-Spearmint. I like the raspberry-spearmint over the unflavored.

During the winter of 2006, I was sick with a sore throat for 2 months. 2 rounds of antibiotics did not do the job. The olive leaf cured my sore throat and healed me better than the antibiotics plus bed rest. Now, if I or my husband and toddler ever feel a tickle in our throats, I use the Olive leaf to nip the bug quickly and we are healed within a day or two.

I can't find this product in health food stores in Michigan so order online. The company is quick--I ordered the product Wednesday night and it came on Saturday. Or if you don't like to order online then have your local health food store order you the product.

I was just reading in my Parenting mag for the month that honey helps coat the throat. Ages 1-5 give them half teaspoon, ages 6 and up one teaspoon. You give it to them straight. It said as often as need and right before bedtime.

(not for children under that age of 1)

It looks like we use some of the same stuff as the others but make sure if you use the honey you get the raw honey--not the heated and stripped of all the "good" stuff processed honey. We also use Collodial silver--it works wonders on anything from colds to diarrhea and when just getting the stomach virus "nips it in the bud". God bless.
