My Son Is Supposed to Stay off His Feet for 2 Weeks Following Surgery...

My son just underwent surgery on Friday to removed extra fingers and toes on all limbs. Everything went great thankfully and he is on the mend. The doctor asked me to try and keep his weight off his feet for 2 weeks. (He said, "Try your best, I know it's going to be hard.") My son is just about 9 months old, just started crawling on his own, loves to 'walk' around with mom, pulls himself up to the standing position and loves to jump around. I am not walking him and trying to stop him from standing. I am going to take him for strolls in his stroller, but how else can I keep my little son contained without boring him out of his minds? It's only been 2 days and already he is feeling good.

What can I do next?

For in the house... use the high chair. You can make pudding or jello and let him "fingerpaint". You can put blocks or other toys on the tray to play with.

He'll be strapped in and safe in the high chair while being up high enough to see everything around him too.

Ditto the thought about a carrier. Although the backpack types he might be long enough to push on the frame with his feet. That might be nixed if you buy shoes with laces and just tie the shoes together?? or buy little sandals that you can tie together with a shoelace to keep him from using his feet while in the carrier, if its seems to be a problem.

Best of luck!

You can try and put him in an 'umbrella stroller' for in the house... and wheel him around. The umbrella strollers are compact and has a strap on it, and it's real convenient.
When my daughter had a foot injury once, that is what we did.
And then we just put her near the coffee table, and she could do activities at table height.

But since he is 'pulling-up' now and active... gosh, I don't know how a baby will stay off his feet! What a conundrum!

All the best,
Susan

put him on your back in an Ergo carrier or something like that. He can see the world - both of my kids loved the Ergo at this age! www.ergobabycarrier.com

Do you have some sort of play center you are able to place him in where he cannot reach the floor? Otherwise, you will have to just get down on his level and play. It will be over before you know it.

Can he have some tummy time on your bed? Maybe prop him up on pillows so he can't bang his feet or arms on the bed?

Try a wagon. You can place pillows in there and have him lay on his tummy. You can wheel him around the house. Maybe he will even nap for you in the wagon. I wouldn't take him outside because he is not strapped in, but at least he can be mobile and in
a different position.

Strollers are great, give him some new toys or his favorite snack "only in the stroller", so you can change it up a bit.

Best of luck to you... Two weeks is a long time to keep a wiggly boy off his feet. Especially when this the time they start to cruise the furniture.

Hi, my daughter also had additional toes on her feet. She had surgery just before her first birthday. She wasn't really walking yet, and the regular pulling up and crawling activities didn't bother her recovery at all. If it bothers him, he won't do it as much. I would say just to not promote the walking for a couple weeks and that will be enough. He'll also enjoy just playing with you and if you're holding him and bouncing him around, there won't be solid weight on his feet. Did you know that extra digits are actually considered good luck in the foreign lands?
Best wishes,
J.
