My Son Has a Rash That's Spreading!

My 15 month old son has developed a rash on his arms, legs and bottom with small red bumps (almost like pimples). I first noticed the bumps about 2 weeks ago, but we assumed it was mosquito bites. The bumps have come and gone, but they've really spread today. The rash are small bumps all over and they do NOT itch. He's also got a runny nose, cough and really fussy. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your kind words and advice! My son ended up having hand, foot, and mouth disease (and he ran NO fever with it) AND an upper respiratory infection. He's been on antibiotics for 3 days and is doing better, but now he won't sleep all night. Geez! Does this ever end?!?!?! This too shall pass.

A rash, runny nose, cough can be caused toxic chemicals which are in cleaning products, detergents, childrens' shampoo and bubble bath, such as formaldehyde.

What did they say? Also- coxsackievirus-- look that up. a version of hand, foot and mouth. Also, he could be allergic to something. Go to the pediatrician.
Could be a respiratory virus-- at some point the bumps are not contagious but are there.

Hi there, I would wonder it maybe his body is finally having a reaction to vaccines. Some kids get vaccines and finally there little bodies start to react.
Rashes can be caused by so many things unless he is really itching the Dr's guess is as good as anyone elses. Mom usually knows best. Most common rashes accompanied by runny nose cough ect. are usually a virus. No meds will get rid of a virus. However there is lots of natural things that will get rid of a virus. (olive leaf extract, colliodal silver ect)
Anyway these are all just possibilities. Hope he gets better.

hello A. my daughter had a similar thing. she would have the rash on arms leggs and chest(never back) and within hours it would go away and come back again. we took her to the dr and found out she was allergic to grass. if my grass is just cut she is fine but if is ever so slightly high she gets this rash. then sweating outside made it worse. if this is anything similar this is the medication she got and it soothed her rash and made her happy- pramosone 2.5%. i hope she gets better soon God bless-D.

you might contact the doctor and find out if it is 5th disease. My 6 year old had that and it sound just like you described. It is nothing really to worry about but the rash will come and go more will appear as they get hot or out in the sun. His doctor said it was something that just had to run it course could take a week to several weeks. If it is 5th disease the only thing you need to be concerned about is being around NEWLY preg. woman (12 weeks or less) could be harmful to baby.

Have you changed any of your ahbits like what you're washing in, or washing your clothes in? New perfume orlotion? With the change in weather has he been given allergy medicne he could e allergic to one of the ingredients, especially if its a generic over the counter drug like from family dollar or something? What did your pediatrician say... Is he in daycare or around other kids?

Without any further history, I would say he is proably teething. Some of what your describing could also be roseola. Did he have a fever last week? If he did and it was high, I would say the roseola, its self limiting and really nothing to worry over. I would make sure to keep him extra hydrated. Check his gums and offer cool chewing toys. A wonderful teething product found at Babies R Us is their teething mesh bag. Babies just love it! If you dont think its teething or if its gets worse, be sure to get it checked out. Best of luck;)

My son has the same symptoms you are saying. When I brought him in, he got diagnosed with excema and allergies. He got the meds and been good ever since, and this was two years ago. He still has flare ups of the excema (little bumps that look like rash) but when he does I call in for some more meds (lotion with a steroid in it) and it goes away in less than a week.

I had a similar problem with my son when he was 9 months old. We took him to the doctor, and it took five different visits to determine that it was a rare form of eczema that was easily treated with a cream. It was a little frustrating having to take him so many times, but it was worth figuring out what was wrong. Be patient if you have to take him several times to determine the cause.

It could be a viral rash, especially if he was vaccinated recently. Try giving him 1/2 tsp cod liver oil (Nordic w/ lemon at whole foods or other nice herb store) in the morning and another 1/2 tsp in the evening. You can even add it to his sippy cup. If that takes care of the rash, great. But, if so, you may want to consider getting some immune support on board.

Also, any change it could be 5th's or hands, foot, mouth? If I remember right, the rash with some of that strand does not hurt, but the hands, foot does hurt.

best of luck, J

Some viruses are accompanied by a rash that usually does not itch. If you were dealing with eczema (my children have this) or contact dermatitis or an allergic reaction, you would most likely have some itching going on. The best rule of thumb is that if the runny nose becomes thick and yellowish or fever is present, call your doctor to schedule an examination. Another rash-causing health issue is strep infection, but usually when a child has strep throat their rash is localized to the diaper area and will be really red and may itch. Small children can have strep throat and never complain of a sore throat. Usually strep is accompanied by fever. I have found that I have always erred on the side of caution with my two (girl-9, boy-5) and taken them to the doctor to be sure, especially if it is on a Friday when they are feeling poorly. If you can avoid those week-end ER visits by going to the doctor on Friday, you are always better off. For example, my daughter broke her arm in first grade on a Sunday afternoon. While we were at the ER, there were several children there with Rotovirus (vomiting, diarrhea, high fever). By that Tuesday, my daughter had a milder version of this bug (it affects younger children and babies more harshly) and was throwing up in addition to having a broken arm. With that in mind, unless you just have to visit the ER on a week-end, try to head it off on Friday at your regular doctor's office if you can. I wish you and your little ones well! Happy parenting!

sounds like hand foot and mouth but I would have hime checked out because this can be contagious to other small children. There is also another small toodd disease I really can't think of the name but some of the symtoms are diareah, vomitting and some pain the child passes this effect to adult and other children but not the actual disease but I am no doctor so have him checked!

My daughter broke out on her legs and back and chest really bad, her doctor said it was dry skin, but it was in patches and spread. I went and tried Aveeno Oatmeal Bath treatments, walmart or any drug store has it in the bubble bath area for like $7 and after a week it was gone. No soap, no lotions just the baths, except i used soap on her hair.

Dr. Sears has a great website that gives a good description of different rashes and what needs to be looked at by a doctor and what doesn't. www.askdrsears.com.
