My smallest son who just turned 1 has had diarhea for about 3 months now. He gets these horrible stomach cramps. he crys for an min. of 30 min a night. We have been to the doctor about once a week over the three months we have no idea what is wrong. We have done stool samples ultra sound to check for interssuption(sp?) and all were ok. we have gone to his gastronenterologist (he already is being treated for gerd) and he did a test in the room to check for blood in his stool and it was positive. we are scheduled for a EGD and a colonoscopy in two weeks. My question has any other mom and child gone through this. Either the symptoms or the procedures. What do I expect? I am really kinda scared
****A NOTE***** SINCE HE HAS HAD THIS DIAREAH HE HAS BEEN ON THE BRAT DIET, AND EVERYTHING HE HAS EATEN HE HAS HAD NUMEROUS TIMES BEFORE ALL THIS STARTED HAPPENING. NOTHING NEW HAS BEEN INTRODUCED. WE HAVE TAKEN TO MY ALLERGIST BUT WHEN WE WENT I FORGOT TWO DAYS BEFORE I GAVE HIM AN ANITHESTIMINE SO IT DIDN'T WORK. TO ME I DON'T KNOW BUT I MIGHT BE CHECKING MY WATER SYSTEM HERE. I CAN'T REALLY REMEMBER BUT I THINK THIS ALL STARTED WHEN WE MOVED HERE AND HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT DRINKS THE TAP WATER. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR SUGGESTIONS AND PRAYERS THEY ARE VERY MUCH NEEDED.

What can I do next?

I'm glad you are going to see a specialist for tests. In the meantime, try to remember or find his vaccination schedule so you can show it to the specialist when you go. Sometimes kids react to certain vaccines with diarrhea. It might not be that, but it's worth looking into. The body is eliminating the virus and the toxins that were in the vaccine. Now, I'm not a doctor. I'm just a mom who has 4 kids who have been through a lot. *smile* I've found that each child is different and what is true for one is not necessarily true for another just because they are siblings.

Hi C.. My ds has this problem. He was also treated for GERD. He has casein allergy/intolerance-even the GI and allergist is stumped as to whether it's an allergy or intolerance. It showed up at about 10 mo. He is off all dairy. If he eats even one lousy gold fish, he gets severe diarrhea. So bad it burns his bottom to a second skin layer. Now that he's almost 26 months he tells me "have rash it hurts". I feel so sad for him. I wish so bad he could eat milk products like other kids. The EGD and ph probe weren't too bad. Both of my kids have had it. They did not do a colonoscopy though. Oh, I didn't mention that he comes up negative on the allergy test too. Also, berries and citrus do the same thing to him.

{{hugs}} I feel your frustration. Have you considered it if could be dairy?? Feel free to email me if you have ?'s. ____@____.com as I don't check this often.

Oh, and if you are in Fort Worth, like Jennifer H, we too go to Dr Ogunmola. He's alright, but I think Dr Hunt is much better.

I have no words of advice, only I am sorry your family is going through this, and maybe your Dr can give you a number of a local or online support group.

Perhaps you can find a board here with other moms who are going through this:

Hi,
I have not gone through what you are experiencing, and I wish you the best of luck with this. I might recommend seeing a specialist as 3 months seems a bit long without the Dr providing better answers as to why this might be happening. I would also encourage reading as much as you can with medical books or the internet to learn more about what might be happening--when we have had medical challenges, I have found a huge variety of helpful informaiton that kept me more informed of what to do and or what type of specialist to see and when.
Take care.

Water is a thought. See we some times solve our own problems when telling our story. When I was a little girl we drove 6 hours to grandma. It was Holiday times and I would get sick throw up and run fevers. Like the flu. Then my great grandpa came from Ca to visit in Oregon my grandparents and he got sick. My grandma then would boil the water and put it in the refer before we came after that and I do not remember getting sick after that. G. W

Hi C.. My daughter just turner 7 and about a year ago she was having cronic direah and complained on a daily basis of stomach aches. We really watched was she ate, but she still had the same simptoms. I finally took her to the doctor about 4 months ago and had some blood work done. I can't remember the actual name that the doctor said, but basically she had an infection in her gastrointestinal tract that had spread. There was no way we would have known, except that we had blood work done. Her doctor put her on two high powered antibiotics for 21 days and she has to take previcid for 4 months. She said that taking these two antibiotics was the only way to fight this infection. Then we will go back and get her checked to see if it healed her stomach. After the antibiotics were finished, even before they were finished, she has not complained at all. The doctor also mentioned that something like this can possibly be hereditary, and that I might want to look into having some blood work done also. I do have acid reflux and some of the same simptoms she was having. I hope this helps. Good luck.

This isn't much advice I'm afraid, but if you think it might be the tap water, change to bottle water for awhile and see if it stops, but be very careful that your little one stays hydrated in this Texas summer with diarhea. I'm sure you are frightened.
Don't give up hope.

I am sorry I can give any help...but you noted that he drinks the Tap Water.

Have you tried bottled water? I give my daughter Nursery Water it still has the floride in it. We also have a water filter on our tap in which I use for cooking.

I don't know much about this, but if he's drinking tap water and that's the only thing that's new with him, you might try just giving him Nursery Water. You can buy it at Wal-Mart or Albertson's.

C.,

Have you tried a pediatric chiropractor?? I know that a lot of people are skeptical when hearing about how many things chiropractic adjustements can help with.... however, it's true!

I've been going to a chiropractor now for over a month and my two daughters go as well. I took them in because my oldest (4 1/2) was complaining of headaches and constipation. I was tired of listening to the traditional medical advice and decided to make a stand and try something new. She hasn't had any headaches or problems with constipation since we started.

If you are interested (not sure what area you are in) I have two referrals for you.

Hi C.,
I'm sorry to hear your baby is going through this.
When I read that tap may be a reason it makes sense to me that could be a reason.
I personally prefer the bottle water for my son's bottle and my family and it seems every time that I drink from the tap, it leaves an icky feeling in my stomach and weird taste in my mouth.
Maybe since I'm older and have a better immune system, it's not causing diarrehea for me but possibly if I was younger....
Definitely try the bottled water for a while and see if it helps. I know you have tried everything already but maybe this could be the trick.
Good luck to you and I hope your little baby gets better soon!

I went through something similar when my son was 3 weeks old. His pedi saw hime everyday at some point until we "figured" it all out. He too had GERD. At one of our daily exams, I told his pedi that there was streaks of blood in his tools, she then did a stool sample and it was ALL blood. She then checked us into cook's. There we met Dr. Ogunmola (his GI dr.). My son had the colonoscopy (lower GI) and upper GI. They also put a pH probe in since was already knocked out to test the severity of his GERD. It turned out that his problem was allergy to dairy and soy (both through breast milk and formulas), combined with GERD and constant ear infections (it took about 3 months to figure that all out). While I don't think that would be your son's issue because he is so much older, I felt the same way when we were going through all the testing. It can be scary and overwhelming, but knowing you have a great doctor that is looking out for your son's best interest can be somewhat comforting. I just wanted to let you know that eventually they diagnosed all of his issues and is now a happy healthy 19 month old toddler. You can get through it!!! :)
